There are definite advantages to making

something big out of a lot of little things — Chuck Close

Come on in! The big 100th post day is finally here. WELCOME! I’m so glad you came by because I really wanted to THANK those of you who have been such warm and generous blogging friends over these past few months, and to welcome those of you who are just joining us!

Tis the Season to be thankful! (pssst, do I look alright?)

Some of you are new here, and some of you have been with me for most of my blogging days. Janet, Becky, Terri, Cherry, Beck, Abby to name just a few early visitors! It makes me happy to see both the familiar friends, and the new faces! So thank you, all of you, I have been blessed by some wonderful, insightful, caring, inspiring and hilarious blogging friends!

Before we move on to the festivities, I wanted to say I have had my share of fun and foibles with this blog so far! I began not having a clue what I was doing (ah, well, I still don’t), having few if any visitors (which was really for the best anyways!) and no plan or strategy for how my blog should look since I began it all on a whim. It has been a work in progress to say the least.

At times the “blog” has once or twice nearly become a four letter word at my house with my late night and early morning attempts at formatting and creating a post, my poor husband downstairs pining away for the days before I knew about blogs! Actually, it has cut down on the sheer volume of words spoken to him per day, and for that I am sure he is eternally grateful to all of you. His ears must be happy for some peace and quiet at long last.

Through my naivety and lack of planning during the life of this blog, I once caused some bloggers to double over in laughter at my faux pas in titling one of my posts with a word that apparently also means wife swapping in some parts of the world (Thank you for pointing that out so I could redeem my post, Sophie, LOL!), I’ve nearly caused myself to shut down my blog in shame when a particularly dull and artistically void post listing boring facts about myself was visited by interior designers, I’ve called bloggers repeatedly by the wrong name (Sorry, Rhoda!) I had other bloggers (Manuela) correct embarrassing typos for me in their comments to avoid humiliation, I didn’t visit dear Pat for months after she first visited me because in trying to visit her I would accidentally find myself on someone else’s “back porch” (and he wasn’t all that friendly), oh, I could go on forever with my blogging foibles! It is a wonder I’ve made to today to celebrate! Somehow I’ve managed to keep a few of you coming back, likely out of pity! Thanks to all of you for whatever reason you continue to visit!

Now, to the P A R T Y! Let’s get festive!

Please, let me take your coat and do make yourself at home. Here, have a sweet!

Treats catered by Taste via a fabulous wedding blog Style Me Pretty!

As you may know, we are attempting to party across the miles with The Blissful boutique as they are kicking off their holiday season with a French-inspired glittery extravaganza! As Murphy’s Law states, if something can go wrong, it probably will! Here is a highlight of what happened to poor Abby just two days before her party:

We won’t be surprised ever again if we pull up to our shop at 8 in the morning two days before the premiere of our biggest event of the year…and find a crew of roofers tearing off our roof. No joke. One frantic call to the landlord later, and the roofers are fast-tracked to finish our side of the building by dark last night, and the entire building by early Thursday morning. Please, God, let it be so. Last time I checked, we did not invite Din and Debris to A French-Inspired Noël.

LOL! Indeed not, I would never invite Din and Debris to a holiday party! Oh I do hope that all worked out and they didn’t have to step over roofing debris in their party outfits!

Ok, in all seriousness now, because we are on the cutting edge of blog parties, we will now attempt to connect via satellite to The Blissful to see how things are shaping up in Canton, Ohio for their party!

A French-Inspired Satellite Party

Abby? Abby? Can you hear me? Abby, are you there?

CRACKLE, CRACKLE, BZZZZZZZZ, CRACKLE ……… WHIRR RRRRR BZZZ, BZZZZ. EKE EKEKE KKccccccccKK CRRRRRRRR shhhhhhhh EKKKKKKK

Ok, well, moving right along! Heh. Alright. Eh hem. Ah, word is that the “connection” is still being set up for us to see snippets of the big party there, so if you are joining us early in the morning Friday, you will have to tune back in a bit later to our satellite feed right here at The Inspired Room! Satellite Party Take Two! Come on back, we’ll get the connection working I promise … Murphy’s Law aside, we will get this satellite party started!

And if you come back and comment on Satellite Party Take Two once our satellite connection is up and functioning, before the party ends, you will be entered into the drawing again! woo hoo!

Meg Duerksen

Congratulations Meg! Be prepared for your own mass of tape, glue, glitter and yarn otherwise known as a handmade ornament from yours truly! (just kidding, there will be no yarn involved!)

My favorite hostess gift is one I just gave a friend: I call it “soap on a rope,Judy-syle”.
I use crochet cotton and turn a facecloth into a pouch, complete with drawstring to hang over a faucet or hanle. I also included a scented, silky bar of “girly” soap!
My friend said I really should sell them! …never thought of that – and I wouldn’t know what to charge, if I did! LOL

Congratulations on your 100th post! What a party! All that chocolate is making my heart palpatate! As to hostess gifts, most the the dinners we go to are casual where I always ask if I can bring something etc. Sometimes the host/ess says “just bring yourself” and sometimes it’s can you brings some ice, soda, wine, dessert etc. In the summer I like to bring something from my garden – some fresh tomatoes or herbs in a pretty thrifted bowl or basket. Sometimes I bring flowers already in a vase (thrifted). But really I don’t have a standard gift. I guess if it was a fancy dinner party at someone’s home that I didn’t know I’d bring a bottle of wine(but not expect they open it that night!)

When I started my weblog, months ago, I felt lonely, just like a first-day-in-school girl who has no friends in new world.
But your warm “classmate like” welcome helped me learning about the wonderful new digital world around me and make many new friends via your list of friends.
Your blog has a friendship soul which affects all your words, the words that appeal every reader.
Wish you luck and congratulation on your 100th and hope you 100000000000th.

Hi Melissa! What a grand party! Congratulations on your 100th and on surviving all the errors that go with beginning. When I began I couldnt figure out how to post a picture for about a month, now I can edit my HTML! My favorite appetizer is baked brie with crackers. Warm gooey cheese sometimes we top it with dried cherries and pecans, but I love it plain! I will be back to see the second half of the party, Thanks for a great time:>)

What a beautiful post, Melissa! So festive and so appropriate for a 100th…hearty congratulations!! I’ve been in love with your blog since I first found it and have been delighted to share it. It’ll be my pleasure to announce your party myself.

I love to take a box of chocolates from Lindt chocolatiers for a hostess gift.

As for hors d’oeuvres, this doesn’t qualify, but a friend just arrived last night with this yummy treat…definitely in keeping with my Velveeta style ;>

    Spicy Dip

2 softened packages of cream cheese
1 jar of hot, medium or mild salsa
1 small can of sweet corn

Combine first two ingredients folding in the sweet corn last minus the juice from the can. Chill and serve with crackers or chips.

Hi Melissa , oh we made it!! Thank goodness, running late getting ready, Hamish and Miss Pene had to be fed before we left !! What a delightful party you have for us, and you do look gorgeous! We always bring a box of chocolates, a bottle of wine and a specially selected bouquet of flowers as a hostess gifts. One of our favourite appetisers is petite potato rosti cakes topped with smoked salmon, creme fraiche and dill. It seems we too will have a few too many choclates tonight and maybe a glass or two of champagne with you! Maybe one glass for Jacqui, she’s 17! Sincere congratulations on your 100th post, we love your Blog and wish you hundreds more! Jenn and Jacqui xo

Your party is such fun! I love the sweets, they are delicious and unfortunately I feel them travelling straight to my thighs. Oh gee I can’t win even cyber eating!
For appetisers I’ll suggest some things from my family’s background on both sides. On the Italian side I love bruschetta, just plain tomato/red onion/oregano on crusty bread drizzled with the tiniest bit of extra virgin olive oil (no cheese necessary), and on the Slovenian side I love pickles with pickled onions, home-made-on-the-farm cheese, little pieces of canteloupe on toothpicks and the Slovenian equivalent of prosciutto…. mmmmmmmmm all washed down with some Champagne, then we’re ready for the entree!
Enjoy your party, thanks for inviting everyone!

Melissa your party is just delightful! Everything is so neatly and prettily displayed and the food looks delicious. I’m so thankful to be on the guest list!

My favorite appetizer is bacon-wrapped crackers straight from the Paula Deen kitchen. I use saltines which I think is slightly different than her cracker-of-choice but who can’t find saltines?? Take a half strip of bacon and wrap it around the cracker on which you’ve already placed a teaspoon of Parmeggiano cheese. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 2 hours at 250 degrees or 40 minutes at 350 degrees. Believe me, they are the simplest things to make and go like hotcakes!

The hostess gift can vary. If I’m going to a Christmas party I bring food and an ornament. If I’m going to a house-warming party I follow the “It’s a Wonderful Life” theory: Bread, so the house may never know hunger. Salt, that life may always have flavor and Wine, that joy and prosperity may reign forever.

    Love,
    Julie

Melissa what a fun post!! I love all the photos. How breathtaking is that mantle in the first photo! WOW! I might have to try that one in the hearth room.

One of my favorite hostess gifts is a bottle of Missouri wine. Another is Bankhead’s Chocolates. These are handmade chocolates from a locally owned business. I took a box of these chocolates along on a train trip, my daughter, granddaughter and I took to Chicago, yummy! One of the hostess gifts, I gave most recently, was a Mary Carol book mark from Nell Hill’s. It’s silver metal with a bee motif. It was among the things I gave my friend JoAnn, in honor of our school mascot, the Yellowjacket.

    Melissa,
Here I am for the “first round”, so much delicious food I will have to come back later. I don’t want to make a pig of myself in front of my new friends:). The hostess gift I brought is from here http://the-feathered-nest.blogspot.com/2007/10/mitten-ornament-tutorial.html

OMG, I think my ignorance is showing again, even worse than having your slip show at your chic event. But the gift is an ornament for your tree: delightful cotton, vintage mittens made by Dawn. I know you will love them.

Thank you for all your help and for making my foray into blogdom less stressful. I will be back with my elastic waist pants on later.

ok. for a hostess gift, i love to take a jar of homemade pumpkin butter….i tie raffia around the lid, and will add a homemade vintage ‘button’ magnet to the raffia…the buttons look so pretty on the fridge.

and for the appetizers…my all time fav is to take dates, stuff them with spanish cheese, wrap with bacon and broil. yumm-O!

also, i am vying for that BFF status! so i have created a post this morning on my blog, with a link to your amazing and most sparkly and wonderous of parties…!! everyone must see this! you are truly brilliant! this has been such a treat for my eyes today!

I’m late…I’m late..but I am here now. You have out done yourself with your beautiful party. What a feast for the eyes. Everything is soooo beautiful! Here’s a sweet appetizer that is a killer and wildly popular. I’ve know people to actually hide this dish so they can have it all for themselves.

    Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball

1 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened
    1/2 cup butter, softened
    1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
    3/4 cup confectioners sugar
    2 tbsp. brown sugar
    3/4 cup miniature chocolate chips
    3/4 cup finely chopped pecans
    graham crackers

Beat the cream cheese, butter and vanilla until fluffy. Gradually add sugars; beat until combined. Stir in chocolate chips. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours. Place cream cheese mixture on a large piece of plastic wrap: shape into a ball. Refrigerate for at least an hour. Just before serving roll cheese ball in pecans. Serve with graham crackers.

Now I am off to put a link on my blog to your fabulous party. Hugs, Lynn

Transfer to serving plate, pour remaining marinade over and garnish w/parlsey springs.

Congrats on your 100th!!! My favorite is artichoke dip = any artichoke dip really. Usually an equal mixture of artichokes, mayonnaise and parmesan will do the trick. Love it and can probably eat an entire dish myself, though I’ve never tried!

I want to join the contest/s and I will link to this on my blog.
    Thanks!!

Congratulations on your 100th post. The party is fabulous!! One of my favorite appetizer is Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnuts. In 1/4c soy sauce marinate 1 can(8oz)drained water chestnuts for a hour. Wrap 1/3 slice bacon around chestnut and fasten with toothpick. Bake at 375 for 20 mins. or until bacon is done. Delish. My hostess gift is always candles of the season..Linda

My favorite hostess gift so far was a tea party theme lunch that I had where I bought pretty teacups and saucers of all different kinds from thrift stores and used them as a part of the table setting. Then when it was time to go – all my guests got to rinse and take home the pretty teacups and saucers. It was a nice surprise for everyone because they weren’t expecting that!

I love bringing serving dishes or cake plates as hostess gifts, sometimes it’s nice to get different serving dishes to jump start your creativeness –
and sometimes they can be expensive and you mite not feel like it’s worth the splurge – so I like to bring them – something they love but wouldn’t normally splurge on themselves.

I think one of the most apprecaited hostess gifts I’ve given was for a friend who I knew had gone to sooooo much trouble with her dinner party. I left an unexpected hidden thank you gift with a note saying how much I apprecaited her friendship, under her pillow for her to find at the end of the evening – she told me later it made her cry….happy tears of course.
Just love your party – congrats on the 100th post.

    Wow! I am going to be copying down some fabulous ideas here! First of all, thank-you for including me and for hosting this wonderful celebration! Secondly, I have posted a hard to miss advertisement for this gala event on my blog! Oh yes, I want to be on that special FRIEND LIST! {{GRIN}}

My hostess gifts are usually things like elegant candles, Godiva chocolates, something gourmet, or an ultra-pampering gift that the hostess may not take time to buy for herself.

    Here is an appetizer:

    Three Cheese Hot Artichoke Dip
    Paula Deen

    • 1 (8 ounces) block cream cheese, softened
    • 1 cup mayonnaise
    • 1 (14 ounces) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
    • 2 green onions, sliced thin
    • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan
    • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
    • Dash hot sauce
    • Dash Worcestershire sauce
    • Salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand held electric mixer until smooth. Then beat in the mayonnaise until smooth. Add remaining ingredients and stir together until combined. Transfer the dip to a pie plate or shallow gratin dish. Bake in a preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes until the top is golden brown and the dip is bubbling. Serve hot with crackers, tortilla chips, crostini or veggies.

    Blessings galore,
    KJ

Howdy Melissa – what a great party – what a great idea!! Everything is so GORGEOUS! Congrats on your 100th post, but more than that, congratulations on having such an inspiring and fun and informative blog – I love it!! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderfulness with all of us!! As to a hostess gift, a personalized hand-painted ornament would be a nice touch. As to appetizers, the simpler and tastier the better – we do a dip that is devine and EASY – brown a package of hot pork sausage, add 8 oz of cream cheese and either a jar of salsa or a can of Rotel tomatoes – stir together until it’s all well blended – it’s best kept warm and served with tortilla chips. It may not be the prettiest dip, but it disappears the fastest!

Thanks again – party on – we’ll stop by tomorrow and see what’s up! Get some rest!

    Blessings,

Thank you for such lovely inspiration! Every time I come by for a read I leave with a new idea to make my home more lovely and comfortable.

My favorite hostess gift is homemade seasonal potpourri, if I know that the house in question has no allergies or whatnot. Otherwise, I also like to take a delicious, rich, fair trade coffee called Bishop’s Blend from Episcopal Relief and Development and maybe some homemade scones – this is especially nice for overnight visits or for the hostess to use the morning after a big to-do when the last thing she wants to do is make more dishes by getting breakfast going.

Now, as for my favorite little nibble, I’m torn between three. My friends have all eaten these about 8,000 times each over the years, and none (neither the nibbles nor the friends) will ever let you down:

    1) Olive cheese balls (from the Colonial Williamsburg cookbook): a butter, cheese and flour pastry wrapped around regular old green olives and baked. A few with a glass of wine is a right proper start to a festive dinner.

    2) Garlic puffs (from the New Basics cookbook): roasted garlic mushed up and layered in between puff pastry and baked under an egg wash. I use teeny tiny cookie cutters to make stars (for Christmas or Fourth of July), hearts (Valentine’s), and so on.

    3) Chorizo skewers (from my very own little mind): rounds of cooked chorizo layered on a toothpick with a bit of manchega cheese and a sundried (or, really, a dehydrator-dried) cherry tomato replumped in warm balsalmic vinegar.

Oh! And then there’s sundried tomato garlic spread atop a pastry cutout. And little steamed dumplings. And vodka tomatoes dipped in seasoned salt. And…

I just LOVE “little food”. I wish cocktails was a real meal.

I really enjoyed this post and laughed at your early blogging foibles, they sounded very familiar! I think we’ve all been through similar problems.

As far as a tip, here is something I do for parties I attend:

I always make up a fruit or veggie tray and put it on a vintage platter or serving plate from a garage sale, something pretty but inexpensive and leave the plate as a gift for the hostess. Its great to not have to worry about gathering up your dishes to take home after the party and it looks so much better than using something disposable.

It looks like your party is a hit! One of my favorite hostess gifts is a pretty wire holder filled with monogrammed paper guest towels for the powder room

Here’s an appetizer that is sure to please, and one that always goes over well around here. Enjoy, and Congrats!

    Bacon and Tomato Appetizer Cups
    Ingredients:

One 10 oz. can Grands Flakey Biscuits (* must be flakey)
    8 slices of cooked bacon
    One ripe tomato; diced
    1/4 small onion, chopped
    3/4 cup Swiss Cheese; grated
    1/2 cup Mayonnaise
1 tsp dried or 1 TBL spoon fresh chopped Basil

Divide biscuit flakes in sections and form into *muffin pan to make 24 cups
    (must use mini muffin pan)

Combine remaining ingredients. Spoon a small amount of mixture into each cup. Bake at 425 for ten minutes of until golden brown. Makes 24 mouth-watering cups!

Melissa, I already left a comment, and I’m not leaving one to ‘double up’, but thought of this and so just make this a post script to my previous comment.

Finger foods for parties can be exotic and yummy, but this note is a reminder to consider those with special dietary needs. It’s always nice to have something they can eat. Although it’s probably impossible to meet everyone’s dietary concerns, I thought I would advocate for those with celiac disease. Wheat, rye, barley, and oats all contain gluten and they can’t eat evey a tiny amount. Having finger foods made from other ingredients is easy and helpful. Here are a few ideas:

~ corn chips (blue ones are neat) with fresh salsa or pico de gallo

~ mini rice cakes with a creamy spread on top, then decorated with tidbits of colorful veggies or olives

~ rice or nut crackers with cream cheese spread or a nut butter

~ veggies and dip or cheeses cut into fancy shapes

    ~ fruit slices with chocolate

    Party on!

I’m a little late to the party, but enjoying myself nonetheless. Great food, great decor and the company can’t be beat!

I love stuffed mushrooms for a hors d’oeuvre – chopped stems, a little onion, some bacon or sausage all sauteed in some butter until soft, then seasoned with sage, stuffed back into the mushrooms and topped with a little (or a lot) of finely grated swiss cheese. Bake 20 minutes at 350 and serve hot.

One of my favourite hostess gifts is to wrap 2 candle tapers in pretty paper and ribbon – layering the paper and embellishing it with a charm or other trinket. I often combine the candles with pretty paper napkins and wrap the two in clear wrap tied with a fat ribbon bow.

I always serve marinated mushrooms. You either love them or hate them. But mushroom and garlic lovers love them. MARINATED MUSHROOMS
    WONDERFUL!
From ‘The Working Person’s Cookbook by Charlotte Erickson1979
    1 pound mushrooms
    3 teaspoons salt
    1 cup olive oil
    4 cloves garlic, minced
    ½ cup vinegar
    About 6 drops onion juice
    Finely chopped fresh herbs (optional)
Select only very fresh, firm mushrooms. The best are the large fat ones with short stems. Do not select mushrooms with flattops and dark gills showing beneath, as they discolor. Soak mushrooms in cold water for 5 minutes to loosen any soil. Put them into a plastic bag and fill it with sufficient water to generously cover the mushrooms. Hold the bag closed with one hand and agitate vigorously with the other. Drain in colander. If they are not completely clean, repeat. Trim stem ends if needed and place mushrooms in a large heavy skillet (no shortening is needed). Sprinkle salt over the mushrooms and simmer, covered, over moderate heat for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and drain. Meanwhile, mix the remaining ingredients and pour into the glass container in which you are going to store your mushrooms. Add warm mushrooms, cover, and allow them to marinate at room temperature overnight. Stir occasionally and refrigerate.
Cream cheese stuffed into a jalopeno with bacon wrapped around it is also yummy but HOT.
My hostess gift would be a seasonal dish towel and coordinating knitted dishrag.
