The "I Don't Like to Paint"
Pity Party & Poll

This piece will be so fabulous when it has a fresh coat of paint
(and maybe some fun new hardware).

Recently, due to my move, I have ended up with a lot of things that need to be painted. A lot of mismatched wood things. I happen to know that many of you like to paint. Everywhere I go in blogland, someone is happily painting something and making it beautiful again. Is there anyone out there that DOESN’T like to paint? Is there anyone who dreads the idea and procrastinates like I do?

I love the end result, but I admit I just don’t like to do the painting part.

I have a friend in Portland that has come over several times to paint with me. She knows me. She knows I hate painting. But she. LOVES. painting. And somehow with her around, painting something is a bit more fun.

But here, in Washington? I have no one to paint with me {sniff! I think I heard crickets}.

Just look at all the pieces of furniture and other wood items I have that need paint! Someone put me out of my misery!

The "I Don't Like to Paint"
Pity Party & Poll
I need to paint this table and chairs.

The "I Don't Like to Paint"
Pity Party & PollI need to paint my front door and my light wood handrails.
And if I was ambitious and liked to paint, I’d paint the walls too.

The "I Don't Like to Paint"
Pity Party & Poll
I need to paint this cabinet in my son’s bathroom
when I do the Coastal bathroom makeover.

I guess I need a painting pep talk, or some sympathy. Anyone?

Let’s take a little poll.

THE PROCESS OF PAINTING: LOVE IT OR NOT?

PS. I had to laugh that Winston snuck into a couple of my photos today. He had a little accident this weekend while off on an unapproved adventure to a neighbor’s house (a St. Bernard accidentally knocked him over and he injured his shoulder. Winston is 14 years old so he isn’t as sturdy as he used to be).

After his trip to the vet, he was ordered to be on bed rest until his shoulder heals. Ha! Every time I turn around, he’s walking around, or sneaking up the stairs. Or mocking me from his bed.

The "I Don't Like to Paint"
Pity Party & Poll

I bet Winston would like a Sleep Number bed. Win one for him at Blissfully Domestic!

    Hi Melissa,
I always love the idea of painting, and therefore convince myself it will be fun. It doesn’t take long to remember that it is not the process that I love, only the result. Then it goes a while between projects until I forget the cramped hand and the mess that I can make while painting
    and start something else.

My friend, Mrs. Rabe, paints often. She seems to be one of those who loves it. Maybe she will comment…

Winston is a charmer. Hope he heals up quickly.

I love to paint whether walls (not ceilings!) or furniture or a craft project, but I do not love the prep work or the clean-up. I painted our two bathrooms – one six months ago and the other two weeks ago – and I haven’t done any of the touch-up work yet. Actually, touch-up isn’t so bad; it’s just finding the time for it! Plan a day to tackle one of your projects and just do it – you’ll be pleased with yourself.

Like you I think that would look good painted BUT hate to get started, once I’m started and the object is started it’s okay but I have two shelves I trash picked almost a year ago, they need to be primed and painted and I haven’t done it yet.
Then again, I need to go run, I don’t love running in the rain, except once I get started it’s fine, so here I sit procrastinating. Okay, gotta run and pick up some spray primer this afternoon.

Oh gosh….I hate to paint! Even more…I hate to take a piece down to the bare wood and restain it. I love that first piece, the Secretary…..I wouldn’t be able to put paint on it. But, then, I am a wood person….loving the beauty of the wood grain.
The door, cupboards….no problem…paint away. But, like I said….I hate the stripping process and painting, too ;-)
Hope you share after you paint those items. I am still holding out for keeping the Secretary wood!!! ;-)

    Hey!
I do paint a lot because I want my home to look beautiful and the orphan furniture pieces that find their way to my home to look cohesive! Do I love it? No, well maybe… I do love the results….right now I am gearing up for a possible repaint of my basement! I get excited to think about it because I love being able to envision something and make it happen!

If I lived near you, I would come help you paint….but you should really get Manuela to come help you – she is awesome at it!

I’m not in love with the idea of painting. I guess I like the finished product but it’s getting to that stage that bothers me. I like some wood pieces left stained. I can see how a trashed piece of furniture can benefit from a coat of paint and give it new life but in my opinion I don’t think every piece should be painted. But that’s just my opinion!

Girl~ I hear you :o) Just yesterday I recruited my 8 and 6 year olds, even the 18 month old “helped”. We painted a plate rack, two kitchen chairs and two shelves! All black spray paint of course. I try not to think about it too much. Just decide I’m going to do it and once I’m into it I can’t back out LOL. And “voila!” I have works of art…..well, kinda :o) You can do it! And just think of the finished result. Those pieces will be awesome!

    Winston is such a cutie!

I only like to paint when there is room for mistakes to be made. I know I’ll make them, and I don’t want to feel bad about it! This is the reason for faux paint! I just keep adding a little color here and there until it looks just right. Fancy! Nice furniture scares me. :-)

Maybe some of that could be spray painted? That’s always more fun. (Like the table and chairs. NOT the bathroom vanity!) I don’t mind painting, but I don’t like the prep work. I just want to start slappping the paint on. I have to do a crackle finish on an armoire next and I don’t even want to count how many coats that will take. (Sometimes I break it down into smaller jobs too… doors first, one side at a time.)

I am always excited when I get sudden burst of ‘good ideas’ when it comes to painting but about half way through any given project, I am so over it. Then I try to ‘hurry’ to get it finished and sometimes I mess things up because I am not very patience towards to end. I love the ‘after’ and even the ‘before’ but the ‘somewhere in between’ really gets to me. I am with you. I love having all sorts of exciting projects to do, but I need a ‘painting buddy’ too. I love the Coastal Bathroom ideas. Thanks for sharing them with us again.

Since I have recently painted my kitchen cabinets and am now painting all of my wood trim in the house white, now is not a good time to ask if I like to paint!! I do love to paint, but the trim is making me a bit weary. that said, the finished product is what makes it all worth it. I am going to do a post soon when my kitchen is complete to show everyone what a little paint can do for kitchen cabinets. BTW, I am a lurker…love your site~

Just because we hate to actually paint so much! I did try the spray paint thing on a barn star, and that wasn’t so bad…kinda falls into the “instant gratification” area! And I am all about quick projects! Good luck getting things done…maybe start with the smallest, quickest project, and then maybe you’ll like the results and want to get more done! :)

I love to paint. I just don’t like the cleanup. I don’t like painting ceilings, but I’m good at painting walls and cutting in without taping off first. I would paint more furniture and stuff (even bought a spray painter) but finding somewhere in my little yard to do that without the overspray on everything is a challenge. I love how paint gives something a new life for so very little. In fact, I have some great furniture from my daughter that is black that I’m thinking of turning white and antiquing it some. That’s just one more project, though, than I have time for lately.

I am too impatient on top of the fact that I hate painting furniture. Once I decide I want something painted I want it done immediately so I rush through the process and do not do it properly. Then I start moving it and putting stuff on it while it is still kind of wet which totally messes it up. Oh well! From a distance or with the lights down low it usually looks great!

I have never painted much at all really. When we built our home, we decided we would paint the upstairs and hire out for the downstairs. Well..I enjoyed doing it..but I didn’t want to see brushes and rollers for a long long time again. We still don’t have all our doors painted. We’ve been here 4 years. I did enjoy working on our kitchen table. The chairs are still waiting. I think I would enjoy it more if I had more MOTIVATION. (me, I’d rather just purchase whatever in the color I need it in)

I’m approaching the very end of the in and I’m still not done. I’m finishing painting trim in media room and it is definitely a slow go. The best thing about painting rooms at my house my husband is 6’5″ and does ceilings without a roller, but he hates the bend down, on your knees work. Sigh! Wish I were taller. Good luck with the painting. Play great music. Plan treats for yourself as you finish goals. And give that Winston a great big, but tender hug. What a cutie.

I am actually much more apt to paint a wall than a piece of furniture for some reason. I have done most of the painting downstairs in this house. I’ve even had professionals say I do a good job! We have the stupid “orange peel” sprayed on surface that is common in California. That makes cutting in VERY difficult. But, I still have a breakfast table, 4 chairs and a stool that need to get painted. I think I procrastinate because I’m not that confident on what I’m doing with furniture. Plus, there’s always something else to do! Buddy hopes that Winston will feel better soon!

I love to paint! That’s the part I really enjoy! I love transforming things and adding beauty to my home (or others ie: friends, parents, etc.). I absolutely adore the results! For the most part, the painting process really isn’t that long or bad. Yes, I too get a few sore spots after a day of painting or even two or three, but they’re worth it to me.

It’s all the dang prep work and clean up that suck the life out of painting projects IMHO. But I’ve found it’s far easier, if you have a dedicated space and the tools always organized at the ready. I also like to chunk the prep work up a bit so it doesn’t seem like I’m sanding for an eternity on something, or filling & sanding holes in the wall forever. If I have a whole room or a large piece to paint, I’ll break it up… Say prep one wall/or all the larger falt surfaces one day, the next do another wall/ the legs, the next yet another wall/ detailed areas around doors & drawers, etc. It’s not so overwhelming to me that way and each time I feel one step closer to the finish line. I can usually accomplish even larger projects like a room within a week or two if I have alot of other things to tend to in between. Just by breaking it up into manegable bits and keeping at it, it get’s done rather quickly and without driving me bonkers in the process.

I am so there with you! I really don’t mind painting walls, but furniture? Yikes! Not only do I not like to paint furniture, I freeze up about it. It has to be in really bad shape before I’ll attempt it. I feel guilty for hiding the natural wood even though I don’t always like it. I’d love to paint my handrails, vanities, and kitchen cabinets, but there all in really good shape. I worry about resale value, since I’m sure my dream house will be available at any moment and at a ridiculously low price;-)

I don’t mind painting at the outset of the project. It’s when I realize just how looooong the task will take that I start to poop out. I don’t think my husband will ever agree to paint rooms with me again after I fizzled out halfway through the first coat of painting our bedroom a deep cocoa. :)

I don’t mind painting walls. Maybe I even love it. I hate painting furniture. Despise it. Completely. But. I love that I get something that looks just the way I want it to without spending much money. So until I have an endless budget, I will be at home painting my furniture. And grumbling about it.

You already know that I love to paint anything that sits still long enough, so come on & get on the bandwagon with us. You can do it! Actually, my favorite projects require spray paint…fast & easy. But, everything can’t be painted like that, so a brush & foam roller works best. And yes, a little prep won’t hurt either. But think how purdy they will look when you are done! You can stand back & proudly show off your skills.

The chairs will be difficult to paint because of the seats… so I wouldn’t be looking forward to that, but the rest shouldn’t be too bad. Hubby doesn’t like me to paint wood at least not oak like what you have there.

I definitely don’t love to paint. Especially spray paint. I have an appreciation for it, that’s for sure and I definitely love the idea of a quick and easy change, but having painted a small dresser 2 weeks ago and my cuticles still baring the scars (black spray paint) I don’t love it.

But, oh the projects that would be finished if I would get after it!

I feel your pain. I have LOTs to be painted around here and I will “pity party with you”……..I don’t mind the actual rolling of the brush, I just don’t like all of the prep work involved…the taping, the possible priming, the covering of things, the moving of items. Ugh, makes me tired and I’m already tired. I have a partially primed fireplace that is staring at me right now. Have you tried asking for help? Like actually say…”hey if you help me for a couple of hours, I’ll pay you or give you such and such…….I’ll buy your dinner, whatever it takes girl. ” Try it out. I had 2 ladies help my with my laundry room one afternoon and it was SO much more fun.
Well, you have OFFICIALLY inspired me to post about this situation. If I don’t post about it today…then tomorrow it will be. Wow Melissa, look what you can do. If I lived near you, I’d help you….and guess what?!?………..We’d have a blast!!!

I HATE to paint!!! I love the idea of it and love the results but I hate the process-the prep, the mess in the middle, the clean up. Ugg, I feel a major case of the eye-rolls coming on right now.

But when I do painting projects I usually just dive in and get it done and sometimes end up with sloppy work. (It’s so hard to be patient and wait for those coats to dry). But, usually when it’s all done I love it, if for no other reason that it’s done!

    Hi Melissa :)

My poor daughter Annie had to live in chaos, because I was avoiding her room. I’m finally done painting the walls after living here for 2 months LOL I paint all the time, but I only like painting the details… you know, little bits of artistic things that make it special. It’s like the birdhouses I paint, people want me to sell them, but I hate the first coat all the way until I get to the details like flowers and little birds, so I don’t. As far as walls, I hate cutting in, but give me a roller any day ;)

So sorry that you do not like to paint…I love it. In fact I search out items that are paintable, just so I can paint more stuff! I do find it occasionally difficult to get myself geared up to paint (the thought of all that mess and all that clean-up can be overwhelming) however, to solve that problem, I like to designate one day/weekend a month to paint everything that I currently have which is in need. This saves hours of clean-up, b/c it doesn’t take much longer to wash out 3 or 4 brushes than to wash out 1, and it makes me feel like I accomplished A LOT. Good luck…you can do it and it will look great!

two words my dear SPRAY PAINT. I have seen & heard about many people spray painting their furniture instead of P A I N T I N G -which takes F O R E V E R. Even The Remodel Guy recommend spray painting kitchen cabients! go figure- so, it doesnt totally get you out of painting but it does make it a little faster & I am all about fast- get in, get out! :-)

    Dear Melissa,

I am the world’s worst painter…I mean EVER! I am slow, a perfectionist, and it is the most terrible form of punishment ever invented! So, I try to sweet talk anyone into dabbing some color around whenever I can!! Don’t get me wrong–I simply ADORE painted wood. Problem #1–Mr. Honey who ADORES wood grain (READ: boring brown stain!). It is a mortal sin to say, “Honey, I have been thinking about painting…!” Beauty has prevailed, however, and we have gorgeous 1880s wide trim painted white along with several pieces of furniture.

If I were there (and then I could be close to my daughter!), I would cheer you on, help you pick out amazing colors and debate the merits of various paint brushes…as long as I don’t have to hold a brush in my hand! EEEEKKKK!

Can’t wait to see the furniture painted. It will be fab!

I really enjoy painting walls. Hubby and I flip houses as a “side job” and the painting is my job – he does the construction type stuff.

But, sadly, he won’t let me paint any furniture. :( (I hear crickets also…) I have a piece very much like the one you show pictured, that is screaming for a coat of white paint but hubby won’t let me. “Antiques are never to be painted!” Blah.

So I have lots of brown furniture.

Cracking up. Oh, why oh why must we be left with so much brown? LOL! Luckily I have finally convinced my hubby that SOME wood pieces should be painted because they are just blah. And, it is all about the mix in the room! Too much brown is blah, so pick the less pretty items and paint them but hang on to the truly beautiful wood pieces. That is what I say. But hubbies don’t always listen to me.
