Charming Details: Child-Sized Chairs

I love these sweet little chairs lined up at the coffee table!

I remember reading once that every living room should have
at least one child-sized chair, even if the homeowners have no children.

I have always loved that unpretentious advice.

A very charming detail.

That’s a good thought. I think every home should also have a little box or basket of toys too, to keep visiing children quiet and happy because it is hard to sit still for a whole visit.

Until very recently this was true of my home…a child sized oak chair. With two grands, I think I need to be on the lookout for another. That row of old school chairs is so perfect lined up at the table. I bet they stick all the cousins there at Thanksgiving. ;D

…oh ! how i agree…nothing is sweeter than a tiny chair…except maybe one with tiny shoes peeking out from under it…as far as every room having one…even those who do not have children…why of course…we never know the size of those angels we are entertaining now do we….

I love that! So cute all lined up at the coffee table. My kids would feel right at home there :) We don’t have child sized chairs here but we do at the cottage. Here, we have two kid friendly step stools that can be used as chairs too. I love the look of a random chair or step stool in a room. I love Laney’s comment! :)

My daughter would have a ball with a setup like this. She’d have her friends over to play school lined up at the table every day, I’m sure. Too cute!

How cute and what sweet advice. I don’t have a child-sized chair but I did redo a chair which looks like a child’s chair (alphabet) and we don’t have any little kids running around. I can’t help throwing something whimsical into my decor. lol

How sweet Melissa! We used to keep a child-sized table and chairs in the family room, and the boys loved it. Every child that stopped by thought our boys had the coolest house because of it. I love how rugged and comfortable these sweet little chairs look lined up in a row.

My parents never put away the child size chairs when my brother and I grew up. I now have a two child size chairs in my house and no children. I think my husband finds it odd, but I think they can make a corner look cozy or fill in a space nicely.

How cute are those little tiny chairs. This makes me think about when had to go back to my elementary school to pick up my school record and I thought “I can’t BELIEVE I used to fit in those desks, even the rooms look smaller” lol I have an old chair that I loooved as a child, that is now in the possession of my little nephew (since I don’t have any children yet :) )

Charming is an understatment! Nothing worse than to not be prepared when little darlings stop by for a visit.

Small chairs, little books in that special spot will make any small visitor recall with love the person who “knew they were coming.”

I love this idea. Our kids love to visit places where there are special things just for them. It makes them feel special too. I plan on keeping our kids’ little wooden chairs even when the are done with them, just for this reason.

This is way cute…..I just bought a child-size oak rocking chair for my wee grandchildren…..I had one growing up, and wanted one for our home for the little ones. My next purchase will be a little wood table and chairs for them to sit and play/eat at.

I love a lot about that whole room! I love the little chairs and that they don’t all match exactly in color or style. I love the adirondack chairs used indoors. I haven’t quite figured out what that thing in the open beam ceiling is, but I can tell that I like it too!

    Great picture!

I’m sorry to keep taking up your comments with this. I can’t seem to figure out how to just e-mail you. Thanks for your input. I think it is comfortable, just looks kinda big. I may try to soften the look of it with some batting. Thanks! You’re right that if nobody saw it before, they wouldn’t have any idea.

I always have had a child’s chair…an old bentwood chair from an elementary school that was closed down about forty years ago. Still has petrified gum on the bottom! I also have the small oak table w/chairs that was in my grandmother’s home…it is normally in the corner of the dining room, just ready for some small guests! Of course, I have my high chair (let’s call it mid-century style!) in the kitchen, where it’s been since my children were babies decades ago. Lots of little hinies have sat in it and I love having it ready for any baby who happens to visit.

Hi Melissa. I love this photograph, too, and agree with the advice that every living room should have a chair for a child. When my first son was a toddler, my mother gave to him for Christmas a child’s rocking chair; and it’s been in my living room every since. It holds its own charm and sure is great when my grandchildren or other little ones come to visit. Thank you for highlighting the value of mini-furniture. :D ~Arleen

I absolutely love those sweet green chairs. I have two small red chairs from our church nursery from when I was a little one, I even remember sitting in those chose. The chairs are currently residing in our kitchen, but get moved around QUITE often by the kiddos. I simply cannot get enough of child sized chairs, they are precious.
