More Creative Ideas for Shutters

If you are looking for ways to establish a breezy beachy look for your home, shutters are a perfect solution!

We talked about shutter ideas recently in this shutter post, but I wanted to share two more more with you today. You can see both of the following ideas in the inspiration photo from Coastal Living!

1. If you have any tiny or boring windows that could use a little something to bulk them up, you can put shutters around the window (or even cover the entire wall) to give the illusion of a much bigger window! No need to cover the window and lose the light, just cover part or all of the surrounding wall. No one has to know you have a boring shrimpy window.

2. Add shutters to a plain island to give them a little more architectural interest! If you are handy, you could even put them on tracks or hinges so they could open. Or if you don’t need them to open, just use them as architectural detail.

Custom shutters can be expensive, but keep your eyes open for affordable louvered doors and shutters at home improvement stores, thrift stores and garage sales. The beachy, coastal cottage look is very forgiving of imperfection, so it is a great style for DIY’ers and budget minded decorators. Shutters are a great way to add coastal detail!

Great idea! I am seriously thinking about adding shutters on each side of the inside of my bedroom window…but I am having trouble finding shutters that are tall enough – and 4 matching!

    Love your blog!

I love shutters! I would love to find a way to use them in my home. We have a open cabinet space in our family room that I have thought of closing off with shutters. Thanks for sharing.

My mom always had shutters on the kitchen windows when we were growing up. Once I started dating, I would see my mom peeking through the slats of the shutters as my date and I drove up to the house, just barely making my curfew. The slats would shut as the headlights of the car hit the windows, but we always knew she was there. =)

What a beautiful, bright and open room! Now I’ve seen shutters featured here and on the Nester’s blog and I love what I see. I’m going to have to keep my eyes peeled for a set of my own!

Love that kitchen! It would feel like being on a tropical vacation every day! (except for the cooking part)
I have shutters in two rooms now and as I think back, I believe I’ve used old shutters in some way or another in every home I’ve lived in as an adult. I have several sets in storage and a small set on deck to be painted black to be used as a summer fireplace screen (yes, I know summer’s almost over!)
    Thanks for the pretty post.

Love it! My boss’ third daughter was recently married; we used some old plantation shutters as part of the rustic decor for her wedding. I’ve also seen coffee tables made up of louvered shutters. Absolutely beautiful!

Hey girl! I’ve got a pair of cafe doors (they look a bit like shutters!) out in my garage waiting for my brain to decide on a color and a place. I LOVE them but I can’t decide where to use them. I’ll have to send you my link when I get them finished…. don’t hold your breath though:)

I used them inside my goat barn when we re-did it into a place or the kids to “chill” and play nintend or jam with their band. Love the look they create.

I have white wainscoting around the island in my kitchen. It was fairly inexpensive to do, and guests love it! I can only imagine how appealing white shutters would look in my kitchen. ;-)

Shutters are a FAB way to bring in a beachy look… I tried to talk my clients into changing out their cabinet doors to a shuttered look… their whole home has a beach feel… sadly due to the economy the doors are on hold… I soooo hope they do it someday!

    Hi Melissa

Yes that’s Archie – one of my Westies. Dougal (the other one) is actually to the left in the photo but unfortunately he didn’t fit in the banner. Don’t you just love these little darlings – glad to meet another Westie fan. Leigh
