With fall comes the urge to be cozy…and that means you need to have more fabric! Adding curtains to your windows can be the perfect finishing touch to a room!
I ran across some curtain ideas at Southern Living that inspired me today.
Here are my 3 take away tips:
1 Use curtains not only to soften a window, but to create cozy nooks around benches, desks or other furniture.
2 Details, details, details! Fun trim, patterns, scallops and reversible curtains take an ordinary piece of fabric and give it a lot of pizazz. With a needle and thread or even a glue gun, you can add all sorts of personality to store bought panels. I’ve even hung sheets at my windows with the ruffled top of the sheet hanging at the floor. Inexpensive details are possible!
3 If you want to get a custom look without the high price tag or sewing skills, pair panels together. Who says your curtains can only be one pair of matching panels? Why not two sets of coordinating or even contrasting panels? Not only will this give you a one of a kind custom look, it can bring together a color scheme, as well as bulk up wimpy panels.

Loved the last set of curtains! Simple & smart. Of course, the pink and green room was a hoot… so vivacious.

LOL, I just did a simple window treatment in my dining room this weekend, I’ll be posting about it tomorrow.
I love doing drapes at my windows, even if they are stationery panels. I like how they soften the edges.
I love the green and pink curtains in the middle…reminds me of the rick rack on my clothes when we was growing up and that I now put on homemade cards!
Thanks for sharing these sweet ideas!
* What a FUN… and PRETTY… READ!!! I even went back & read more~~~ delightful AND informative!!!

I’m so guilty here. I have used blinds exclusively… Attractive blinds but blinds, still. They aren’t cozy, you have me there. the sad thing is I have a curtain rod set and curtains sitting in the master bedroom for YEARS and I’ve yet to put them up…

I love the curtains, but the chair in the first picture really caught my eye. I love the style of the chair with its softly gathered skirt, especially paired with the dresser/vanity. A really lovely room.

Great ideas, Melissa. I love curtains – but we have electric baseboard heaters under every window in the house so floorlength curtains are a no-no. Any suggestions?

I really believe curtains instantly dress up a room and makes it cozy at the same time. It’s a not too expensive detail everyone should have in mind when trying to turn a room into “home”. I enjoy your blog very much! Thanks Melissa! Hope you had a lovely labor day!

I love the pretty frilly idea with the sofa in a narrow space. I have exactly that and it has inspired me to take a second look at my space and see if I couldn’t adapt it there. Thanks for the ideas!

i just made curtains for the boys’ room….red flat sheets.
i sewed their previous white curtains to the back for a liner, folded it over at the top once…sewed down the seam….done.
4 big curtains in an hour…for $20 total. :) it does exactly what you say. their room is so much cozier today than yesterday.

I love the black & white gingham… I think I’m going to have to fit those into my plan somewhere.
Our windows need 96″ panels – I’ve found IKEA to have great prices & styles that could easily be dressed up.
I think beautifully made curtains and lined draperies really make a room look finished. They also frame the view–and soften the effect of windows that become black voids in the room at night. For all those not inclined to make draperies (it is a lot of work–and all that fabric is hard to handle), you might be interested to know about the big Fall Sale that starts September 12 at most Calico Corners stores. All fabrics are on sale (at least 15% off) and custom window treatments are 20% off. The sale lasts until October 3.
What does # 3 mean? Pair panels together? Do I need another rod for that? I don’t understand. Can you flesh this out a bit for me?
Hi Lauren…no, you could just hang all the panels on the same rod. Put matching pairs on the outer edges of the rod and the other matching pairs on the inside. So if you had brown curtains and plaid curtains you wanted to use together, hang the plaid ones in the middle and the brown ones on the outer ends of the rod.
Does that make sense?
Hope that helps! :-)
Melissa
Oh, this post reminds me I need some curtains for my family room. I have a lot of windows and trying to think of an inexpensive way to decorate them. I never would have thought of sheets! I wonder if they would work? Might have to test it out with some I already have. Good idea!
