Flameless Candles: <br>Perfect for the Holidays

Southern Living

I have quite a few lanterns at my house. I just recently decided to put flameless candles in them for safety. I love having my porch all lit up with candles to greet holiday guests, but it is hard to keep them lit if it is a little windy, not to mention the safety concerns of unsupervised flames inside or outside. I have been really pleased with how realistic some of the flameless candles look! Some of them would really make you do a double take.

I still prefer the scent and look of a real candle, but there are lots of times lately where I am finding a flameless candle works best and you won’t even know the difference.

If you want candles in your garland on a mantle or anywhere that safety or melted wax could be an issue, flameless candles would be a great solution.

Have you tried a flameless candle?

I haven’t tried them yet, but I’m considering getting some this year for my mantle for Christmas.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

I haven’t. I will have to look into it. I am using a lantern on my front porch this year.

Haven’t tried them, but because of small children I haven’t had any real candles recently either! But in a store the other day, I did do a double take at a flameless one. So they do look good!

I do use some flameless votives high up on my hutch, and I’ve been looking at the larger ones for the front porch. They simply eat batteries (and not cheapo AA, either) but there are places I’m not comfortable with flames and they’re perfect for that. We’re giving my 90 year old father in law a box because he absolutely can’t tell the difference and I’m afraid he’s going to burn the house down.

Just got 2 for my wall sconces! They are awesome when you have 4 kids that sometimes get a little crazy when they are playing. Open flames are WAAYYY too dangerous at this stage in life!

I love them- I recently used them for an event that would not allow candles in the building- works perfect.
    Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

That is a good idea, Melissa. Especially if you want candles mixed in with a garland or greenery on a mantel. This is such a bad time of year for fires that any safe way of doing something is a plus.

    Hi Melissa,
My mom loves them, she has them all over her house and changes the color of them with the season. She has given me quite a few and they are wonderful for scones that hang on the wall or for outside like you said. She always orders hers from QVC although they are starting to pop up everywhere. I too still love a real candle but you have to admit, it’s nice not to have to worry about a real flame.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    Hugs,
    LeAnn:)

I got some flameless tea lights for sconces on the wall and for luminaries I don’t see directly (they are in other rooms). They have been great. The peace of mind is the best part.

I’d like to find some that are more yellow like real candles, mine are a bit orange.

Yes, I have some of these on my mantle. Takes the worry out, especially with little kids. My mom gave them to me. I thought they were cheesy at first. But then I used them. I need to go and get some more. ASAP!

No, never have, but a smart idea from a safety standpoint. I love to have candles burning, but always keep a close eye on them.

Good call. I love, love lanterns and have a few myself. They end up not lit (because of my little ones!) or outside on the porch when I’m entertaining to greet my guests! I’ll have to get some flameless candles so I can enjoy them myself (for a change!)
    Happy thanksgiving !

I haven’t used a flameless candle…yet. My family teases me about my candle obsession (yes, it’s THAT bad), and I have remained a bit of a purist. BUT if YOU are endorsing them, perhaps I should check them out again…they’ve been around long enough now that I’m sure they’ve made some improvements in the authenticity department.

Really, I just wanted to wish you and yours a blessed and joyful Thanksgiving! Your blog is always a breath of fresh air and a consistent source of inspiration in my quest to create a safe-haven for my family. So, thank you Melissa…and HaPpY ThAnKsGiViNg!!!

I have a few the downside is no scent, but i like using them where its not safe to use real ones, like around greenery etc…and you dont have to worry about leaving the house with candles burning, as I get older I tend to forget some things…each has it’s place in a home!

I agree about the flameless candles. I have been reluctant to admit that I use them. My friends can sometimes be a bit judgmental :) but after reading this I feel better. I like to use them in glass votives on bookcases or places where I would be afraid to use a real flame.

As for the lanterns, I was at Gordman’s this week and they had some fun oversized lanterns in a glossy red or navy on sale for $12.99 I was really tempted and now that I see how you are using them I may have to give in to that temptation. Happy Thanksgiving.

I complete agree! I first got flamless candles from my grandmother-in-law and I was quite skeptical, I even thought they were tacky. But I’ve done a complete 180 & LOVE them now – we have over 30 in all sort of sizes! We have 2 cats that knock over EVERY candle and lamp they set their eyes on, it’s been a lifesaver (maybe literally)! Another added benefit is no soot on the ceiling. :)

I really would like to find some, but all the ones I find are either way too fake looking or have an awful scent. Can anyone suggest a good place to find some? I don’t like my candles’ scents to be overpowering.

I found a flameless candle at Target last year and love it! I can still smell the pumpkin too.

Marcus and I are heading to our church for Blessfest. While my husband is in for a long day at Kmart.

We celebrated our Thanksgiving yesterday. Marcus and I made the whole dinner! And the hubby loved it!

We wish you and your’s a Happy Thanksgiving!

I bought a few for the decorative votive holders my daughter has in her bedroom. (Teenagers+flames=not a safe idea!) they create a lovely effect when the room’s just lit by fairy lights.

Happy Thanksgiving, Melissa, and thank you for all the inspiration I find over here.

I had never heard of these, but as you can imagine, with a small baby who is just becoming independently mobile and very, very curious about everything (with a special emphasis on electrical wires and shoe polish) they hold a great appeal.

I must try to find some… thank you!

I think the flameless candles are great when you have little ones around or need to be careful outside. I’ve been to a few parties where they have the dramatic entrance through a walkway and have paper bags filled with sand and candles. They are gorgeous but could also be dangerous for little hands that can get curious.

Thank you for posting about flameless candles. I read your blog in the morning and went to Target that afternoon and bought half of what they had. I did not know about them even tho it seems I shop alot. The brand name is Enjoy and I like the LED flickering ones. I am giving them for gifts with beeded wire candle sleeves. And, of course, keeping lots for myself. Although they are breakable, I am hoping that in future years product designers will engineer a way to make them less damageable. They are perfect for families with small kids, pets, outdoor use and for people who live in candle/fire restricted condos. I am putting them in some metal lanterns that my husband brought back from Istanbul years ago. Thanks to your blog I am really enjoying them.

Oh those candles are interesting. I’d like to see and hold one for real! These are great alternatives for candles that are so dangerous and prone to accidents. A house could turn into ashes you know.
