Winter Home Tip: Warm Things Up
With Bits of Natural Texture

Is your home feeling a little {gasp} naked after the holidays? I always think things look a little barren after we put away our Christmas decorations. It feels good to have a cleaner look, but it still seems like something is missing without the tree or garland.

Winter Home Tip: Warm Things Up
With Bits of Natural Texture

I like adding additional natural warmth and interest in the winter without adding too much stuff.

Winter Home Tip: Warm Things Up
With Bits of Natural Texture

Winter Home Tip #1: Little bits and pieces of texture do the trick! (this is the first tip in a 20 tip series!)

Not only can they warm up a space but they can disguise pieces that need a fresh coat of paint this spring!

See all the textures and baskets?
On the walls, on the shelves, random picnic basket sitting on the floor…
(ignore sponge bob, he has a little spongey texture. the tv goes on the wall but for now it is on the table)

You can tuck baskets on shelves or under benches, place woven trivets, placements or netting on tables, put sticks in jars, put burlap or linen on lampshades, use textured pillows on sofas, hang natural wreaths, or decorate with whatever you have on hand to bring a little more warmth, fill in some of the blank spaces and bring your winter home to life again!

I do love these same kinds of natural colors and textures during winter. It seems to match the weather — but isn’t too dreary.

    They feel warm and cozy.

I’m looking forward to the rest of your tips!

I have to say my home is looking a little “dull” after removing all the Christmas dressing! Have to get moving on some of these ideas.
    Thanks Melissa!

Hi Melissa – not sure if I have wished you yet – so happy new year!!! Yes, funny you raised this topic, I always feel like things look empty and wierd after removing xmas decorations ….. glad to see I’m not the only one, hehe!? Your idea of using natural materials and texture is a great one – it adds wonderful detail without all the “clutter, so to speak.

As always thanks so much – great post!

I also miss my Christmas tree! Nice ideas. A colorful afghan on couch or chair always helps, and a plant or two.

Great photos…although I love Christmas, it is always refreshing to bring in a new year once the decorations are put away. We take our tree down January 1..it is a tradition. It gives a fresh start to the New Year. I am a big fan of natural texture and can relate to each and every photo…beautiful!

How do you always do that? Write down my thoughts?
I was thinking how happy I am that I could rearrange the furniture and clean very well now that the tree is gone …but…that it looks a bit streamlined. Time to make a couple of additions.
    Thanks!

I also get a little sad at the nakedness of my house after I take down my Christmas decorations. There is no warm and cozy feeling with no more red and green, and the outside world is cold (currently 9) and bleak (snow covered). In the midwest, we are deep into our yearly grey period. I try to warm things up with lots of textured throws and pillows. I am excited about the next 19 things to come!

Great advice Melissa! I love adding interesting textures to rooms almost as much as adding color!

I love this series that you are doing… I always feel our living room looks empty without our tree, and hate to take it down. Somehow keeping it up year-round doesn’t seem to be an option, lol! You are exactly right that what I am missing is the texture… I will keep that in mind when I finally take down the tree this weekend.
I also want to thank you for a bit of “inspiration” from one of your photos, the one of the wreath on what looks to be a green shutter. I’ve been racking my brain trying to think of something to go on a wall in my living room… and I think this may be it! So, thank you!!
Look forward to your other tips! :-)

Totally did this after the Christmas stuff came down! An additional throw on the couch, a big woven basket on the coffee table full of wheat-colored, thick yarn out of which I’m crocheting an afghan…and today, since I’ve seen so many out there, I may try my hand at the burlap wreath.

I completely skipped over all the natural colors and was immediately drawn to that little red book on your table. Wonderful, wonderful. And it will get you all fired up in other ways! :)

Now, I shall go back and actually read this post!

I love to put up Christmas. And I can’t wait to take it down. This year I feel like the house is so much bigger after the Christmas take-down. I am really enjoying the “extra” room. I, too have my textured pillows and crocheted aphgan and woolen table runner. I love all your ideas for us and you get me inspired to change or love my house more. Thanks and Happy New Year!!
