Creating the Look:: <br>A Summer Beach Cottage

Please welcome Sarah from A Beach Cottage!

Hi everyone!

Thanks for having me over Melissa, I am so glad to be here at your place…I love visiting and always come away brimming with inspiration!

So, when Melissa asked me about a nice summer guest post at The Inspired Room it got me to thinking about summer here at my cottage…it made me think of wide open doors, a lovely breeze coming in through the windows, bare feet and sunhats lying around…and I love that casual laid-back vibe and it’s exactly the beach house ambiance I try and capture in my old cottage.

And with all those things comes summer decorating and for me that means bright flowers, combined with vintage finds, a nautical stripe or two, plus whitewashed furniture and a few shells.

This is my all too easy Coastal Chic look that and it’s a perfect and accessible way to get a little bit summery and a little bit beachy.

I love how the light changes in the summer and using old vintage glass dotted around captures this beautifully so I am always on the lookout for old bottles and glass things while I am out treasure hunting at flea markets…gathered together on a coffee table of glass makes for a lovely sparkly summer touch!

And a simple bunch of summer flowers is a great way to freshen everything up…you don’t have to spend a lot of money, split them up and dot them around…here I used a bunch of Dahlia’s with a lovely hue and some white daisies, grabbed on the way home…and stuffed into old mason jars and bottles….I love the pop of colour to brighten everything up and bring the outside in!

I also like to display things I might find beachcombing ’round here…shells tumbled by the sea and washed up on the beach displayed her and there makes for a relaxed feel – but you don’t have to live by the beach to find them ;-)

Oh and of course, painting things white is a great way to brighten up for summertime…or for an easier option change out with a white tablecloth and white accessories for a fab Beach Cottage look!

Hope you enjoyed the post and thanks Melissa for having me!

Thank you Sarah! I always enjoy your inspiring ideas and lovely home!

So, friends, what are you doing to add a little summer beach cottage feel to your home?

I’ve recently discovered Sarah’s blog and have been following her posts. I love to daydream that I am close to the ocean as I love it so. However, I live in the desert of Phoenix. Well a girl can dream, right?

I also love to read of simple tips and ideas to create a beautiful home when you’re on a budget.

    Blessings and love,
    Debbie

Flowers are absolutely and most definitely something I keep around my home in the summer (and even into fall sometimes). In fact, I have a vase full of those pink flowers on my dining room table right now.

Shells. Definately shells…. have them in almost every room, even when it’s not summer. Thanks for all the inspiration!

It looks so fresh and summery and, of course, beachy! (I hope that those breezes are pleasantly cooling ones and that the humidity is low.)

Yours and Sarah’s blogs are myFAVORITES! Hands down!

Well for starters, we are going to be able to finish painting the house this summer. It’s a VERY large (4500 sq. ft.) old farmhouse so it has taken a while. The color is a WONDERFUL beach gray, with white trim. Such a great contrast in amongst the green. I also want to slipcover my furniture in the livingroom in white denim. Something I can throw in the wash and bleach!! I need to finish my dining room, and hang tulle and flowers at the windows. I also have 120 handpainted white tiles with various herbs on them to put up in my kitchen, after I seal and varathane them.

    I have such a long list……..LOL

I’ll be spending time this weekend redecorating a bedroom in my summer beach cottage! This cottage, or camp as we call it in the North East, is on a river instead of the coast. This calls for lots of color instead of the classic white washed room.

We’re giving it an Americana feel with red, white and blue hues and hopefully some great surprises… if I can track down some accents at the far-and-few-between shops in our area.

Melissa has definately inspired me and I’m hoping to have pictures posted when I’m done at my blog http://www.realhousewivesofpwcounty.com

What a lovely post Sarah. Somehow you have managed to infuse everything with sunshine and light! How beautiful and welcoming.

And Melissa, I just had to thank you for your terrific comment on Jewel Box! I can’t tell you how much everyone appreciated your thoughts about smaller living spaces. And of course, you are the Rock Star of blogging, so it was such a treat to have you stop by!
