I‘ve shared a few times about how much I love little chalk or dry erase boards around the house to leave messages or encouraging thoughts for our family. I always have fun each season leaving my “Happy Fall” or “Merry Christmas” messages. Somehow these happy little greetings make the season all the more special for the kids and guests too!
A few of you eagle-eyed readers spotted a little chalkboard on my fridge a week or so ago and wanted to know how to make one and how to hang it. I aim to please. This board is fun because you can make it yourself SO EASILY and it can stick up on your refrigerator!
(The above photo is an updated photo from my 2014 Summer House Tour!)
I’ve also used this particular board to leave notes for my family about leftovers and snacks in the fridge that they might not know are in there! Giving your kids and husband snack or meal options is a great way to use this chalkboard! It is so convenient!
So here is how to make this refrigerator chalkboard frame in 4 easy steps :
1. These chalkboard surfaces come in adhesive sheets. You can find chalkboard adhesive paper here.
2. Cut one to fit an old frame.
3. Stick the chalkboard on the fridge (it has a removable adhesive on the back).
4. Use these Command strips (I buy mine at Target, or you can order them here) to stick the frame to the refrigerator door. It makes the frame completely removable (and the strips are removable too)! To install, follow the instructions on the Command strip box, it is really easy.
By the way, the chalkboard surface is AMAZING. It is so easy to write on. My favorite chalk is actually the chalkboard pens (found at Michaels Craft or here).
Now you can leave seasonal messages on your refrigerator! How fun is that?
Do you hang things on your refrigerator?
We usually don’t have anything on ours (no magnets on stainless!), except that chalkboard. On occasion, I tape up an important paper if I want to make SURE we see it!

Awesome idea, as usual! I’ll have to check out your shop!
Question: have you ever had an issue with the chalk markers not erasing well? I just used one for the first time, and it didn’t erase all the way. But they were new chalkboard-paint signs, so maybe it’s because they hadn’t been seasoned?
I’ve not had that problem with the pens, but with chalkboard paint you definitely want to “season” them first. These chalkboard surface things (I guess I should figure out what they are actually called lol) are GREAT, so much easier to write on than chalkboard! :-)
This looks like such a classy way to leave messages for my family!
Oh my, I have never heard of Chalkboard markers. Where do you get them. I love this idea.

What a great idea! I have a larger chalkboard on my wall in our kitchen, but one for notes on the fridge would be great!! I too had trouble with the chalkboard markers on the piece I painted with chalkboard paint, never had a problem on purchased chalkboards though. And, I seasoned mine!
I think the chalkboard paint you do yourself definitely has more issues than ones you buy ready to go…I’ve noticed that.
Melissa I LOVE this idea!!
Oh, that’s sweet! Never heard of chalkboard pens. We rarely have anything on our refrigerator because my husband doesn’t like to have anything up there. BUT…the kids love to display their work there, so we have a half-day rule: they can put up their best piece of work for half a day–long enough that everyone has a chance to appreciate it. :) ~K
I love this idea. Finally, something not too kitchy to hang on a fridge! Will be copying this one. liz
I love this!! I can’t wait to do this project!
I really like this idea. So the command strips really do come off the stainless fridge? I’ve been afraid to try them at all for fear they don’t come off, even though I’ve heard that they do.
I LIKE it!!! I’d totally use the chalk board markers w/this!
I love this idea, I am making one for myself and one for a gift for my sister in law this Christmas. Thank you for the inspiration!! Directed to your site through Tip Junky, I am going to have so much fun looking around your site. Thank you
I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!! We have a SS refrigerator and I have so missed being able to hang photos and reminder notes on it…but I also don’t want to mess up the sleek, beautiful appearance…what a great solution! Thanks so much for sharing!
Melissa,
I have really been enjoying these post and I have been getting some great ideas for Fall decorating. Thank you so much for sharing these!r
What a cute idea, do those adhesive strips leave any marks on the SS when you remove them??? I would hate to have 2 marks on the front of my fridge :(
Oh my gosh…LOVE this idea!!! So much cuter than hanging a note with a magnet! Chalkboard sheets? Chalkboard pens?!? I’ve learned so much just from this one little post!
I love this! I am already planning on making one for me, my sister for Christmas and for my daughters teacher for Christmas :) I had never been in your shop before and found a bunch of other things I’ll be ordering in the future!
Clever. I think I’m addicted to this blog now, Melissa!
LOVE this idea! I’m going to order those “chalkboard sheet things” right now. This is so clever and pretty. Thank you!
What a great idea. I hadn’t thought about those Command Strips on the fridge! Thanks :)
What a great idea!! I would love to post what leftovers are in there or what snacks we have. Since there are so many of us coming and going that would be great!
I had a fun memory of you last night…I’ll post it on your Facebook wall. :o)
What a great idea. I love it!!!
I have been thinking about this very idea for a few weeks. I even contemplated painting the doors of my old fridge with chalkboard paint. Your way might be the best way to go. Smart idea!
Yes, we have stuff on our fridge….art, quotes, magnetic words, cartoons.

Help, I have every tiny to large drawing on the fridge it drives me insane and I HAVE to get it under control.
This is such a cute idea….I have to make one!!! I am always leaving notes stuck to the frig for my husband and this is so much more clever….. and practical!!! Thanks for such a charming idea :o)

Yes, pictures and now too much junk! I was just thinking, I need to clean it off soon :) Love the chalkboard Melissa! Classy!
I love this idea! I will definitely be checking out your shop to get some of these chalkboard sheets. Thank you for the inspiration! :)
I can’t even tell you how much I love those 3M strips! I use them for everything and will now have to add a chalkboard to that list :) Beautiful frame too btw!!
a new and unthought of place to put a chalkboard! thank you! one is going up very soon!
I love this too! I’m also curious…what size frame is that?
That’s a great idea. The frame puts such an artistic touch on the chalk board. Now it can be aesthetically attractive and practical for notes.
Are the chalkboard sheets similar to chalkboard contact paper?
Xanax (Alprazolam) is used to treat anxiety disorders and panic attacks. Alprazolam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Unlike other benzodiazepines which must be taken several times a day, Xanax is a once-daily formula, helping you all day long.

So I’m just finding this two years later, but have to thank you for the fridge chalkboard idea. I loved it so much I made one and blogged about it as well (with a link back to you, of course). Love what you do!
Ok, 2 years later, still a great and relevant post! But I’ve got to ask about “seasoning”… Only for painted boards? But HOW?? :) And back to the point of cleaning…. Do all boards clean up nicely or is painted vs traditional better long term? Thanks!!
Hi Elena, you do have to season the painted chalkboards, which basically means you put chalk all over it and wipe it all off with a chalkboard eraser before using it. The paint it yourself type of chalkboard, in my opinion, is pretty challenging to use. The chalk pens are impossible to wipe off so I think using regular chalk is better. We have a chalkboard wall we painted at our church and we researched how to clean it because it was not wiping off. We were able to clean it with Endust, BUT now the chalk doesn’t want to stay dark when we write on it.
THe chalk surfaces that you buy are much easier to deal with, I think, but can warp a little if you use too much water to clean them up. This particular chalkboard was made with those stick on chalk surfaces with adhesive back. We write on it with chalk pens and wipe off with water and a cloth. And yep, two years later it still looks great! :-)
Oh yes… I am so doing this! Thanks for the great idea!
