Sometimes changes in life are bitter sweet. I recently went online to create a photo of my kids with a personalized frame. I cried when it arrived in the mail, it means so much to me! What makes this gift particularly sentimental is what it represents. It is not just a photo of my three kids together. It is a photo of my three kids on the front porch of our family’s beach house, the last time they were there. The frame says it all:
“Memories at the Beach: May you always have a shell in your pocket and sand in your shoes.”
Sigh. That beach house has been our vacation home and the place where we’ve built family memories for about 16 years. Soon it will be sold and no longer ours. We will make new memories and go new places, I’m sure, but as you can imagine, leaving this house is a bitter sweet time for us. It is good and necessary to close chapters of our lives at times, but always emotional to say goodbye to something you love. Creating this little memento is my way of reminding myself, my family, and my kids that we are leaving the house behind, but not the memories or the love! Those things remain. Ok. Now I’m getting all weepy.

Your story of the beach house gave me a lump in my throat. My parents had to sell the lake house my father built, from the ground up. We spent many vacations and long weekends there for over 20 years and it was where our family came together. I miss it terribly and would do a similar frame as a gift for Mom and Dad.

If luck were to be in my side and I won, the gift would go to my sister. We only really got to know one another the past 7 years. She left home at 18, joined the USAF and I hadn’t seen her since I was 13. We connected when God had the AF send me to AZ where she was stationed. I was 26 then. She and I are the best of friends. But, having to let go again, she was sent to CO to finish her military career. She is missed. Terribly. She knows I love her, respect her and miss her. Showing her though, is priceless.

My sister-in-law…my husband’s baby sister…married in September. Her husband was in a serious car accident earlier in the year, before they got married. He blacked out at the wheel in what doctors are suspecting as an unusual circumstance of abnormal brain activity. While he seems to have recovered, he is still not allowed to drive and is still undergoing diagnostic tests. I have a wonderful coworker whose young son (age 6) was diagnosed in February with Juvenile Diabetes, they nearly lost him. In July their daughter Aiden (age 9) was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia and is currently undergoing chemo. My husband! He has been out of work for the past 16 months and while her has had some down days, most days he is strong and full of the Lord. Oh, a beach house! We live on the beach ourselves – not only a new and different sunset each evening, but as you have said “the memories”. We too shall be leaving it soon. “REDI” has lovely items – so difficult to say to whom your offer would go – my marvelous husband, or maybe my wonderful daughter-in-law who has done so much, or perhaps a close friend who is celebrating a milestone birthday …so many, so deserving.
I would take a picture of my husband and me and send it to my 6 grandchildren in Germany. I want them to always know that their “Papaw and Mamaw” love them and miss them.
I would make a frame for my mother. She has always been there and supported my sister and I. From the death of our father to buying a home (me) and having a baby (my sister) she has always been there for us. Now that shes away for work all the time it would be nice to have something small to carry.

My daughters! We have a wonderfully close relationship. They have both been married 5 years, but live a half- hour away so we see each other regularly. They would appreciate the sentimental feeling behind a customized frame.
Family photos are such an important part of life now, in 20 years time you will probably all look back through the photos and the memories that they will bring back, it would bring a tear to anyones eye.

What a great idea! I would love one for my husband. We’re both from South Africa but I had to move to Canada; we’ve been apart for over three years (long story!). The paperwork to bring him to Canada has taken very long and we’re both feeling so discouraged. I would love to send him a framed photo of us with words of inspiration, reminding him that God is in control of our situation. 2011 is a very special year! I was married to a wonderful man in April, but 2.5 months after the wedding he got sick and he is still recovering now (4 months later). I would love to make a special gift for his this Christmas highlighting the fun times we had this year on our honeymoon or during the wedding, so we can remember this year with fondness and forget all the hard times. Is it totally shameful of me to say I’d love to create something inspiring for myself? In Nov. 2010 my world fell apart and it only continued to get worse and worse throughout 2011. I have the hardest time remembering good things so I’d honestly love something that would help me remember that there were good times in my life.
