My Job Chart {Growing Responsible Kids}

Job Chart for Kids {free and online!}

As you might already know, I have three kids. My girls have already grown into responsible young women (PHEW, HIGH FIVES ALL AROUND!), but we are still in the “growing phase” with our son Luke. Boys are different and this is my first time as a pre-teen boy mom! GULP. We knew we wanted this summer to be a fun and carefree break, but we also wanted to use this time to grow his responsibility at home.

We tried different chore charts and methods over the years, but nothing really seemed to stick or grab his attention. I blamed myself for not being organized enough to keep us both on track. I don’t like to nag or beg him to do chores and he doesn’t like it either. And I really don’t like him to end up with nothing to do but play video games all day, so I really wanted to find a summer schedule that would keep him busy and active. And possibly even find a way for him to EARN time to play video games.

Now that he is 12, we knew it was time to down to business and set up a plan for success. But how?

My Job Chart {Growing Responsible Kids}

Enter My Job Chart! Recently I was introduced to a FREE online job and chore chart system that helps kids learn a solid work ethic and the value of a dollar. Needless to say, the timing was right on cue and I was REALLY excited to try it. I thought it might be just the right thing to keep us organized with expectations and to motivate my son to take responsibility for himself.

My son has always been highly motivated by financial and other rewards, so this was the PERFECT way to inspire him with what he could accomplish, because it has a reward system set up by the parent that is easy for kids to track and achieve as they log in every day. Some of the chores are mandatory and others are set up as rewards for going the extra mile!  And chores can actually be anything from emptying the dishwasher, to exercising to reading books! It is all about establishing healthy daily habits.

The My Job Chart reward system is helpful to teach kids to earn, save and give! And the other cool thing is the rewards don’t have to be only about money. Your kids can earn rewards like getting to pick what is for dinner, a special family night, something the child needs or wants, or whatever you choose! You can even set it up so a child can earn video game time! It is fully customizable for your own family. Really, it is GENIUS.

Parents can receive an email or even a text when their child’s daily chores are completed. They can reply to the message by posting on the child’s online “post-it note” to positively reinforce their accomplishments. All around, it is a win-win system for us!

We are all set up and LOVE IT so far! We are excited to keep it going through the school year too and imagine so many positive ways we can use it to motivate him for school work and jobs at home.

I’m definitely a fan of My Job Chart and my son really likes it too!  SCORE. I’m pretty sure you will love it too!

    This is such perfect timing! My son is 9 1/2 and we’re dealing with the chore issue at our house too. I haven’t read the whole post yet, but I had the EXACT same feeling about things not working at our house. I can’t wait to read the rest of this and try it out. Thank you thank you! And I love his Batman shirt! :)

      Ha, perhaps you are on to something. A husband/boyfriend chart. Kind of like a honey-do list :-) I love it. Maybe I’ll sign my husband up! HAAA!

    I too have a hard time sticking to chore charts and providing consistent reward systems. And what is worse, I find that if chores aren’t done by the kids in a timely manner, I will do them myself…which I’m pretty sure teaches them they don’t have to do chores at all!!! So I may give this tool a shot.

    Do you know if it has a mobile app? And if so, does it work well? That would certainly help with getting my son to use it.

    Thanks!

      I don’t know if it has an app or not. I can look and see. It is easy for kids to forget to log in, especially when they are not in the habit yet. So, what I’m thinking of doing is setting a timer on my phone every morning and that means it is chore check in time. Then have him log in, see his mandatory and optional chores and get to work. I’m also thinking of adding in a requirement for him to do certain chores before he can play any video type games to give him incentive to do the chores first without me nagging :-)

    Melissa, I saw this on another blog a while ago and remembered I thought it might work great for our boys. Then I promptly forgot about it. So glad you posted this today. I’ll have to look into it!

    What an awesome service. I have checked this out before and used it with Isaac for a while. I think he was too young at the time but I need to go back and sign in and try it again.

    I wish they had this when Bubba was younger! I had to fly by the seat of my pants. And I felt the same way you do………..my first boy after two girls. Definitely a challenge and you can’t reward him with painting his nails. LOL

    I did discover that when we hit summer time all my kids were in better moods if they were kept busy and had some sort of structure. So we did have a schedule, and regular times that we went to the library etc.

    Right now my system is really high tech. I have a post it note on the counter with their chores on it. lol But it works, and they do their stuff without complaining so must have done something right.

    But I would have LOVED to have something like this when they were younger. Wow!!

    This is perfect, and the timing couldn’t be better! We just had a HUGE discussion about responsibility and work ethic with our 9 year old boy….this might just be the solution we’ve been praying for!

    We will have to look into this – we have been struggling with how to teach the kids the work / reward relationship – and be disciplined enough to stick with it. This will definitely help keep us organized and simplify the process. Donating points to charity is an awesome idea!

    Also a mom of a twelve year old who has turned the corner from kid to “I want to be responsible and earn rewards”…I started the summer with the colored chore charts I saw floating on pinterest; customized with names and laminated. It works great but he’s the oldest of our four and it’s a little too “little kid” for him. I am signing up tonight, thank you!
