Winter Bedding Ideas

Along with adding the bits and baubles of Christmas through the house, layering the bed with extra comforters and blankets is a key for cozying up the winter bedroom! Even an essentially summery or white room can suddenly feel more warm and inviting with the simple addition of a throw at the foot of the bed.

Today I’ve gathered up great inspiration pictures of cozy layers on the bed! Whether you’ve got a colorful quilt, a warm flannel or furry throw or even a pretty scarf, the arrival of December means it’s time to dress your bed in its winter finest!

So cozy! Makes me want to crawl back into bed! We layer in the fall and then break out the heavy duty down comforter for the really cold months.

Thanks for the winter bedroom inspiration. I’ve seen that Sarah Richardson bedroom many times and never tire of it. Perhaps you feel the same?! (: So gorgeous. Since I sew, I have a thing about fabrics and love to look at her rooms and count the patterns. I think that is part of what I love about her designs; her multiple varied patterns always work – the more the merrier, yet they are never overdone. xo, Faith

Oh yes, I agree. Every time I see these rooms I think about them in a new way, like today just thinking about how she had layers that make it a room that is really seasonless! LOVE Sarah and her rooms!!

I add an electric blanket to my side of the bed folded in half. My husband doesn’t want any extra layers! Our bedroom is so cold that it is really hard for me to fall asleep in an ice cold bed. I love the feeling of a warm cozy bed on a cold winter night. We don’t have much heat in the back of our house for so many reasons. Has to do with a really poor heating ducting system poured into the concrete foundation of the house and a flat roof (those darn mid-century homes). Eventually we had to reroute the ducts through the walls, but it was very hard to get anything sizable back to the master bedroom. Ah well… the joys of old homes.

I add layers, I love my all white bedding even in the winter so a few more blankets do the trick for me. All the images above are wonderful examples how to do it tastefully and simply!!
If you have a chance come by to see the gift tags I made this year!! I am so NOT a DIYer so this was fun for me!

I bought a big -7 sleeping bag to put under my duvet. It’s fleece on one side, and another non-slippy fabric on the other. It’s super warm in our old house.

I always use flannel sheets at this time of year! And a cozy comforter and an extra blanket across the foot of the bed. I love to cozy it up and since we live in Pennsylvania it gets cold in the winter!

Love all of the examples! It’s been a challenge this year, though. We are so unseasonably warm I can’t even handle the lightweight-but-microfiber comforter we put on the bed (with just a sheet). During “normal” winter cold weather I would layer it over my warm-weather cotton quilt. I do see some days in the 40s in the future forecast, maybe it will start feeling like holiday time!

I love these pictures…I pinned one of them for inspiration in my middle son’s room. I have a khaki coverlet on his bed with a red quilt at the bottom and red and gray pillows on his bed…my favorite part is the black and creme ticking that I have for his bedskirt, euroshams and panels…I love the idea of adding the wicker trunk at the end of his bed and maybe some of the bamboo blinds for a little texture.

you always supply us with great inspiration, Melissa!

It has been 70 degrees in Chicago … no need to layer yet.

I love layered bedding, too. Now, if I could just make my bed with all those layers! I leave my coverlet and euro pillows off all the time. It looks pretty when it’s made though.

What pretty inspiration pictures. I love the photo from The Lettered Cottage! I usually add a couple of layers at the foot of the bed for easy grabbing in the instance that my husband and I get cold in the middle of the night. Even if we don’t need them, a full, layered bed this time of year is so warm and cozy!

Layers are a must in our bedroom!
Cold winters + drafty windows = need for warmth
“Private summers” = need to throw off warmth (literally, you savvy?) :)

I add layers, and if I’m feeling especially wild, I’ll reverse the comforter for a more wintery color pallett. I’m so risky!

    Hi Melissa
We own a duvet quilt that you can add a layer in winter, and take off in the summer by means of fasteners. It is Summertime here in Australia so I have just removed a layer.
Merry Christmas to one and all from Australia.

Thanks so much for sharing these! The gray/white bedroom is totally my inspiration for my new home’s guest bedroom… I can’t wait to get in there and start decorating.

But just wanted to add that every time I see Sarah Richardson’s work I am SO blown away by her ability to pair patterns, textures, and materials. I would never think to put the things she did together in a bedroom but it totally works!!!

Can’t wait to see your kitchen reveal!!! :)

I don’t think I could sleep in those rooms. I wouldn’t want to close my eyes. But waking up would sure be nice!!

As has become expected by us Home style walkers, these are certainly never going to be one of those gifts that one finds are perfectively beautifully but not our own decorating way of enjoying posts. Thank you for the share that so many of us are happy to explore and the pitfalls we could avoid any way possible!
