Happy almost end of 2012 to you all! What a year it has been! I thought I’d put together a little round up of some of the projects I worked on around our house in 2012. After looking through the entire year of blog posts, I am a bit SHOCKED by how much I was able to do this year. I guess I feel that way every year, but this year probably takes the cake for the most projects attempted. HAHA. I probably didn’t even include everything all in this post, but I tried to put in most of my favorites from the year.
The biggest project of 2012 (next to all the new hardwood floors) was my kitchen makeover. It was in process for over six months of this year. I shared many posts of the kitchen makeover along the way for readers to follow along with the process, but the final reveal (and the after of the pantry makeover, too!) will be coming up! I’m so excited to show you how it turned out!
The kids’ bathroom makeover was actually in 2011 but the reveal wasn’t until 2012 so I think it deserves to be included in the project round up. I’ll allow it. Heheheh. I also shared a tutorial for the Tin Ceiling Tile Backsplash.
Some of my favorite projects are always the most simple updates around the house. I will have LOTS more of these kinds of projects in 2013 since we are winding up the big remodel type stuff (for the most part) and will be focusing more on simple updates that are quick and affordable (including decorating, homemaking and organization posts.)
Early in January (which is really only a few days away!) I will be sharing my yearly Home Dreams / Goals for 2013 and reflecting back on my goals for 2012 to see how I did!
Meanwhile, here is a round up of many of the projects, improvements and progress we made around our house! Towards the end of 2012 we started to finish up a lot of projects, such as new wood floors, painting the kitchen and family room updates so in 2013, we’ll see more of the finished rooms as final details come together.
Striped wall {completed end of 2011, featured in 2012}
Lighten up back of bookcase with maps
5 Five Minute Gardens {Terrariums}
Spray Painting a Goodwill Find
Staircase Makeover {New Wood Floors}
Adding Visual Flow & Paint Colors Between Connecting Rooms
New Dish Cabinet {Excuse the Dirty Glass heheh}
Filling in Awkward Space Above Cabinets
Updates to the new “Gathering/Living Room”
Dining Room Makeover {Updates}
New Subway Tile & Quartz in Kitchen {Makeover Progress}
New Sectional & Media Room Progress
Adding Character with Plank Walls
Hickory Hardwood Floors: Kitchen & Family Room Makeover
And, now I think I might need a few more days of vacation after reliving all that was accomplished in 2012. PHEW! HA HA!
2012 was a wonderful year not only for getting house projects underway or finished, but for The Inspired Room too! The Inspired Room officially became The Inspired Room, LLC, I became a “Pinterest pinner” for Better Homes & Gardens, I was featured in a House Beautiful spread on color, I formed an exciting video partnership with Scripps Network (think HGTV!), helped Jack (the Goldendoodle) start his own blog, traveled this spring to NYC and this fall to the Ballard Designs headquarters, was invited to be a part of Martha’s Circle (a group of blogs handpicked by Martha Stewart’s editors) and so many other exciting milestones and opportunities!
I’m so blessed to get to share my home, projects, thoughts and life with you here on this blog. Every day is really a dream come true for me. I’m very grateful. Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement in 2012. I’m REALLY excited for 2013!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Wow! What an awesome job you have done with your house makeover! I love your kitchen makeover with the subway tiles and quartz countertops. I will admit that my favorite photos are those in which your adorable dog is in. The one where his reflection is captured in the cabinet is fabulous! Thanks for sharing the recap of your home projects. Your home is amazing as well as very inspirational!

Melissa….I have been a follower but not a commenter. I absolutely love the new floors. I have looked on Mohawks website for the flooring and I believe to said it was Hickory Natural, can you please elaborate on the style name. I can’t seem to find it. I have found berry hill, pembroke, somerville and warrenton. Can you please share which line this is?

Amazing. Its hard to pick a favorite … floors, planked walls, kitchen re-do …
As for the simple and inspiring … I’d say the baskets on the wall are so eye-catching.
happy new year!
First time ever commenting. Love all your ideas. Was wondering what brands of paint you recommend? I have Oak kitchen cabinets that I want to paint an off white. Not whitewashed. I also have some furniture that is a laminate that I would also like to paint and give it a modern look with new handles. Not sure how to do all this with a clear coat on it so that nothing stains it if the kids were to leave a cup of water on it. Your suggestions are appreciated. Happy New Year!
Your home is beautiful and you have really added some lovely architectural interest. I am most inspired by the striped wall and the planks, both of which I am in the middle of adding to our home. Thanks for all the inspiration and the lovely posts I have enjoyed all year. Wishing you and your loved ones all the best in 2013!
A Wonderful and Creative Year!
I’m new around so I missed some of those fabulous projects… and now I’m almost sorry it is too late (9 pm here ;)) to start something ahahah
Cheers to a wonderful, inspiring and creative New Year!!!

I was enjoying your pictures again, but had to laugh when I got to the Fireplace Makeover. Did you notice that Jack is wearing a yarmulke? :-)
Happy New Year!
Your home is looking so beautiful! I know it is so valuable to look back and see how far we have come… it helps us face the HUGE list ahead! Us crazies are always adding new things to the list :)
You did an amazing job!! I can’t wait to see more and more! It’s fun to watch the process. I really like the paint and trim. The stairs and floors are beautiful. I could happily live in that space myself!
The fireplace makeover was my favorite although you had MANY transformational projects in 2012. I am really impressed! I have enjoyed your blog very much this year after finding it and will look forward to what the new year brings in your little neck of the blog-o-sphere!
