Kitchen Remodel: Sources

Where did you find …. for your new kitchen?

Wondering where to begin with a kitchen design project? Where do I find things like hardware, lights, cabinets, tile, sinks and faucets or accessories? For an extensive remodel or an all new kitchen, you might want to consider hiring a qualified kitchen designer to make sure your kitchen is safe, up to code, functional and to help you avoid expensive remodeling mistakes. Remodeling can be stressful, expensive and overwhelming!

But with both of my most recent kitchen remodels, I was able to do the design work myself (since I left most of the appliances, electrical, plumbing and layout where it was) and then just worked with local contractors (a general contractor, a plumber, an electrician and painters and local or online suppliers) as needed to make the changes and updates I wanted on a reasonable budget — and in keeping with the quality and style of my house.

Cheap or poor quality DIY projects or remodeling choices may not be worth doing if it lowers the value or quality of your home. As you make decisions, always consider your budget but also what impact your home improvement projects will have on the value of your home should you sell down the road. And over-remodeling or pouring too much money into a home you plan to sell may not make financial sense either. There is a balance there and all of our circumstances will be different.

My decisions or choices may not be right for your house or your budget, but perhaps it will inspire some ideas or resources you can use as a springboard, even on a larger or smaller scale kitchen project.

If you haven’t seen the reveal of my kitchen remodel, you can find the kitchen remodel post here

For your convenience in this post (below), I’ve spent a million hours (haha, ok not a million but it was a lot of hours) putting together a list of my specific kitchen remodel sources (my kitchen paint colors, finishes, hardware, accessories, lighting and appliances as seen in my kitchen reveal.) Hopefully this post will be useful to you and save me time searching for stuff later when questions arise.

If you might want to refer back to this post for future reference or inspiration down the road, you may want to pin any of these images as well favorites from the kitchen reveal post (you can use the convenient new pin it buttons that will appear as you scroll over each picture).

You’ll also find a links of some related posts below some of the sections, if you want to find out a little more detail on specific items that I’ve written about. Everything may not be listed so if you have a specific question on a source and I haven’t answered it here, feel free to ask in the comments.

The new ‘appliances’ I got specifically for this remodel: microwave, the range hood, and the sink and a faucet. But in case you are wondering, I’ve listed all my appliance brands below (several of them were already in the kitchen when we bought the house).

Faucet: Danze in Polished Chrome {can order locally or online, research for best price}

Sink: Kohler Whitehaven short apron front sink {you can buy through a local plumbing or online source, just google to compare prices and measure carefully or check with your contractor before buying a sink}.

Range Hood: Zephyr Anzio 30 inch {you can buy through a local or online appliance store. It did require some electrical work and venting from our kitchen through an outside wall}.

Dishwasher: Electrolux

Stove: Maytag {four burner gas}

Refrigerator: Maytag

Microwave: Panasonic {we got ours at Costco}

Espresso Machine: Jura Capresso Impressa S9

    This is very helpful as I just completed painting my kids’ kitchen in very similar colors. They are now searching for subway tile/grout and light fixtures. Your kitchen has a very similar vibe, so I’ll show them your pics :)

    Everything looks great! I have two questions about the paint used on the cabinets. Did you use Advance Benjamin Moore paint? And, what paint finish did you select?

    • Melissa

      Good question. They are Advance and I’m pretty sure they are semi-gloss. I’ll double check and add that info to the post!

    Great kitchen makeover, Melissa! I love the color combination you used. Very inspiring! All the hours you’ve spent on this project are worthwhile.

    Also, a great DIY product you can use in your future projects is Bondera Tile MatSet – a great way to install countertops or backsplashes and so on. You can find more information here http://www.bonderatilematset.com/.

    Hi Melissa,
    You may have mentioned this previously, but I could not find the feed and my painters are gearing up to paint my cabinents today. Did you use latex or oil based paint on your cabinets? I have always used oil as I hear that is best when spraying, but I have recently heard of people using latex to spray. I would be grateful to know. Thank you!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

      The cabinet paint is Benjamin Moore Advance. It is a latex! It seems these days many painters prefer Benjamin Moore Advance to oil and they feel the quality is comparable. Enjoy your new kitchen!

        Thanks Melissa for confidence in this. The painters around here are insistent upon oil, but the fumes are so strong for weeks and I have little ones to worry about! Thank you for getting back to me so promptly. I was able to run by the store just in time to get what I needed!

    Hi Melissa,
    I came across your lovely blog quite by accident while looking for home decorating inspiration. I wish I’d found it earlier! It looks like I just missed the bloggers home tour in June, something I would have loved to see. Your kitchen remodel is gorgeous. I also love how you’ve used slipcovers in your living room. Years ago I had a local Seattle seamstress make two outstanding pairs of sofa slipcovers for me. She is no longer available, and I’ve been trying to find someone else. Would you know of anyone in the Seattle area who sews slipcovers? Thank you ,
    Hania

    I love your kitchen so much :) I always come back to look at your house to remind me what I am going for in my own home.
    Anyway, I have been reading through about the paint colours in the kitchen. I am reading Glidden Polished Grey and Polished Limestone. But Polished Grey doesnt exist on the Glidden website. I want to paint my master bedroom Wood Smoke but that’s too dark (It doesn’t get a lot of light). So I thought the next colour down. I love, love, love the colour on your kitchen walls (Polished Grey) but where do I find that?
    I hope this makes sense :)
    Thanks so much.

      I believe Polished Grey is just couple of shades lighter than Woodsmoke. If you go to the Glidden paint counter, they have a paint color book. Go to Wood Smoke and then look at the lighter shades and I bet one of those will say Polished Grey! It wasn’t in our paint sample options either, but I found it in their book! :-) Good luck!

    I saved your kitchen picture long ago and am now repainting our bottom cabinets. I was looking at Chelsea grey, bm, but yours looked to have more of a navy tinge. I may copy you, lol, as the rest of our house, leather couch and all, is exactly the same! Thanks for all the info above. It is very helpful!

    Your kitchen looks great! A couple questions: How did you repaint your cabinets? (Roller? Spray? In your home or in a studio with fans to suck out dust etc.?) Our contractor is telling us painted cabinets don’t look crisp like factory finished ones, but yours look great.

    Also, when you added cabinets, were you able to match the existing exactly? Any advice on matching cabinets that you plan to paint? Thanks!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

      Hi Rachael!

      Our doors were sprayed off site and brought back to our home. They didn’t have that crisp factory look, but were pretty smooth! Yes, we were able to order the same (or every similar) cabinets from the manufacturer. If you can’t get the same ones, you may be able to find very similar profiles. If you are painting them that can make them feel unified.
