A Space of My Own

A Space of My Own

About a year ago I realized something was missing in my life. I needed a creative space of my own. More than just an office to work in, I needed a place that creatively re-energized me!

I needed a place where I could get away from the noise and activity of the home to be surrounded by things that inspired me. A room in which I could think, create and just BE. And a room where my girls and I could shut the door, hang out together, laugh really loud, listen to girlie music, light good smelling candles, and dream a little bit bigger. A room where we could eat ice cream behind closed doors, and not have to share it with the boys of the house.

I dreamed of a real getaway for girls in our home. We love our kitchen, of course, but we needed an escape.

A Space of My Own

So last year I transformed my tiny boring office from what was actually more like a storage room to a happy colorful space for creative dreaming. It’s my office, but it’s so much more than that to me.

I love it.

It’s nothing fancy. It’s not huge (in fact, it’s tiny!). It’s not perfect.

But it’s all mine (and my girls’, too!).

And, I have a bit of happy news! Did you notice I finally got my yellow chair?

I knew it was out there somewhere, calling my name.

Yes, yes I did. I found it at World Market and it insisted on coming home with me.

A Space of My Own

I am still smitten with my ‘cute as a button chairs’ nestled in the corners of the room, ready for late night conversations and curling up with a stack of magazines.

I adore my beloved Anthro curtains, framing the large window where I look outside to dream every day.

I love the lively mix of colors that bring this space to life!

In this room, I am surrounded by things I love. Things that inspire me to do what I do and even challenge me to embrace new adventures! As you can tell, color and pattern and happy memories rejuvenate me.

A Space of My Own

I smile at the special reminders of things I love scattered throughout the room, each holding a memory or a laugh. You can find this whale platter in my Amazon shop!

I especially love seeing the chandelier in my office and now my yellow chair just down the hall from my kitchen every day. That view is a reminder of my little escape from the world.

I’m a big believer in having your own special place.  A place to dream and get away from it all. We all deserve that, whether it is a corner of a room or a an entire office or creative space!

Do you have a special space of your own?

My space is my front porch. Not a lot of creating goes On there but certainly a place to decompress and relax.

This post could have been written by me, or for me. I have a similar dream involving Firstborn’s room. It’s a guest room now, but it will be empty after the summer, when The Girl returns to college. I plan on making it a space I can escape to, work from, dream in. Can’t wait.

Your space is very pretty, Melissa. I love the colours (especially the wall) and the button chairs and new yellow chair are perfect for your space. I also have a ‘wocave’, our very small 4th upstairs bedroom. I am in the process of moving things around and adding some more colour but I do love it.

I love the whale plate! I have a little corner, but I need to do something inspiring like this to it :)

I’m so jealous; I’m in the complete opposite situation. I currently have all the space I need since I live by myself in a 1-bedroom apt. I am, however, moving in with my fiance into another small apartment! I hope I’ll be able to create a small little nook just for me like this! I really like the look of the yellow chair, but I’ve always wondered, how comfortable are these chairs after awhile?

Love the chair! The perfect color to bring a bright punch to your space. Is it more comfy than the antique one?
Me? Yes I am blessed to have my own space….it’s way tinier than yours. But….I rarely use it. It’s too dark because the window faces North and there’s a exterior wall adjacent to the side that blocks half the view. Our great room has big windows and lots of light…so I usually bring projects out there or to the sunroom. Windows make all the difference. I thought maybe the whale pillow would make an appearance. :) I noticed the cool plate.

What a great space! I can’t wait to someday turn our itsy bitsy nursery into my office/crafting space! I love that yellow chair you have and the buttons on the grey chair are great!

I love the multi-colored buttons on the upholstered chairs.
And i absolutely LOVE that wood floor. The different colored pieces makes them unique and very different than the “normal same color all over” type of wood floor! I have parquet flooring and don’t like it. I would like to do something with them but what? Someday, I will figure it out.

I must have that plate. I am turning my house into my own beach retreat since my husband hates the real beach. I painted patina blue and peaceful and recovered sofa cushions in ocean prints. I hung plates over the sofa some white, some nautical. That whale would go swimmingly with the rest. (Pun intended!) Do please tell!

I think if you search Thomas Paul whale plate you’ll find some places that sell it. Maybe even amazon. I got mine at a Joss & Main sale! Have fun creating your retreat!! :-)

    Melissa, Lily is adorable!!!!!

I admit I have always had a “place of my own” to relax, sew, think, craft. I bemoaned the fact I had only one child.. but with only one, I had an extra room for the things/activities I love. As I watched your office makeover and the final project, it reminds me that I have let go and “let slide” that favorite place in my home. I am a very organized lady and my craft/sew area must be neat or I “can’t think”…but lately that area(s) are somewhat messy. This limits the time I spend creating. One of the things I enjoy is the inspirational sayings I have posted on the upper cabinet doors as they are very encouraging. I put them on small cards and change or add as my thoughts/needs change.

    I enjoy your posts.

I haven’t figured out where my space is going to be yet, but you can be sure I’ll be carving out a little WoCave for myself in our new house.

We’re looking at building a new house and I’d have an office/room very similar to this size off the kitchen. This makes me want it even more. I love the chandelier, the map, the colors, the light. It’s perfect.
