I‘m still in my gathering ideas, planning and psyching myself up phase of tackling my closet makeover. That’s the phase I get in right before I actually dive in to get the job done.

Which mostly means … I’m on Pinterest.

I’m now totally convinced my closet needs to be way more charming. WAY more charming than it is. When I picture redoing my closet, things pop into my head like beautiful French armoires in a walk in closet that is actually a small room with romantic wallpaper, pretty light fixtures, furniture and clothes on racks like a boutique.

That’s what is in my mind.

But what’s currently in my closet are rubbery wire shelves, puke brown carpet and icky dry flesh-colored a.k.a swine colored walls. Yeow. That’s not the least bit inspiring to wake up to.

I’ve had that boutique closet dream for a long time. I actually got started on one before we moved here, but then we had to move before it all came together. So, it’s been lingering in my mind for quite a few years.

But to be more practical while I’m mulling the dreams over, I put together a doable 10 step action plan for a clean and organized closet, which doesn’t necessitate ordering chandeliers or fancy wallpaper first.

The action steps are all written up and ready to go, so come on over to The Decluttered Home and get inspired with me for a great weekend project!

I am so overdue for a closet cleaning it isn’t even funny. I think that’s what makes it such a daunting task is the knowledge that it’s going to get messier before it gets better.

I’ve got those same sticky plastic-coated wire shelves, probably the ones they installed in 1986 – yuck! Luckily the walls are original boring white and the carpet is an extension of the vanity area which is open off the master bedroom (yuck again – carpet under the vanity sink – at least the toilet and shower are in a little tiled room w/door. Redoing the whole house open floorplan flooring is on the agenda (maybe when I win a lottery), new closet shelving is on the agenda sooner and “cleaning the closet” is dependent on pulling out everything from both closets, sorting, dispatching, etc. as a first step. Since the walk-in closet is so small, I keep the door open with over-the-door hooks to hold stuff and a curtain on a tension rod across the doorway – thinking of removing the door entirely (once I organize clothes, shouldn’t need those hooks over the door). This project has been pushed to the back of the line for the past year but it bugs me every time I walk into the bedroom and hoping today you’ve inspired me to take at least one step forward. .

I’ve never given much thought to my closet besides it should be bigger. Now you have me thinking…

Our daughter (and son-in-law though his space is small in there haha) has the most lovely walk in closet, fully organized and big enough to house a small child. Ours is small and divided equally between us. I have been trying tips to keep my half organized : ) Thanks for the inspiration.

I had such a laugh reading your description of your closet! I am a bit of a closet fanatic–I even colorize our clothes. The first thing my husband in our home was to install Elfa systems in our closets. They are fabulous!

Melissa, I love having an organized closet too. I redesigned my closet not one time, but three times…LOL! Reason being because after I created the extra space that was needed, I ended up purchasing MORE items to fill the new space. However, the hubby has changed that now by moving some of his things into the new space…LOL! Thanks for sharing.

This may sound like an odd tip, but for me, lighting my closet helped! I installed some track lighting from http://www.interior-deluxe.com in my (tiny!) closet, and because I could see everything and it was flattering light, it made me want to actually hang my dresses back up instead of letting them pile up!
