Spring Gardening {& an Invite to a Seattle Garden Party!}

I have an invite for locals to The Home Depot for a garden party at the end of this post so be sure to check it out!

I had a great weekend getting a jump on projects in my backyard. We had some friends over from church yesterday and they helped us do some winter clean up and prep for the area we plan to use for our vegetable and herb gardens! It’s so nice to have friends who will dive in and help!

Spring Gardening {& an Invite to a Seattle Garden Party!}

This year our goal is to get a basic garden started. Because our yard is very rocky it’s easiest for us to plant above ground. Above ground pots will also help keep the pups from trampling the garden when they run through. We have some fun ideas for planting that we can’t wait to try! Container gardening always seems manageable and less daunting to me, so I think it’s a great way to start.

I found these awesome cedar whiskey barrels at The Home Depot and they are perfect for container vegetable and herb gardening. I love how versatile they are and that you could tuck them in just about anywhere! Once I get everything all planted I’ll show you what I am growing, how they were planted and hopefully how they they look as they grow! I didn’t see them online so check out your local store.

We brought home all sorts of plants to try.

I’ve always grown lots of herbs in containers. They are always fun to have in the garden. Last year we had blueberries and tomatoes.

This year I’m expanding a bit to try strawberries, kale, various types of lettuce and other veggies. We try to eat all organic vegetables and I can’t wait to have them in our own yard! I can’t believe it’s taken me this long in life to plan a real vegetable garden but I guess I’ve been busy. It’s never too late to try something new, though, right?

Being plant killers and all, we bought some books last year in hopes of averting a few mistakes. You can find our books and more from our gardening book wish list in our amazon store!

    Headed out this morning to buy plants and some new planters for the backyard. I’ll have to go by Home Depot as I had not looked there…yet! It is finally consistently not below freezing. I think I can safely fill my front planters and spruce up the porches! Great inspiration to get going here! Have a good day.

    What a great solution! Love the idea of using the 1/2 barrels :)

    Isn’t garden produce the BEST?! I agree, containers do make gardening less intimidating, and the bunnies can’t get in them :) Good luck!

      YES! I’m excited about it!!! Thanks! Do you have bunnies, or are they just wandering through?

      HAH! Every year I am surprised that the bunnies jump up and into our pots on the patio and deck. I have run out of names for the bunnies. Last year it was 6 babies right next to my back door(pots are 2/12 ft off the deck). Our golden stands guard and protects them until they are big enough to leave the nest.

    Sounds like your garden is off to a great start. I like those containers and what a great idea to protect the edibles from the pups.

    I think you will find that the things you purchased to grow are fairly easy and with success will come great enthusiasm. I love growing lettuce. It tastes so much better straight from the garden to be chilled then made into a salad. Just pick them while still fairly young and small as the leaves do get tough as they age.

    I can’t cook without a fresh herb garden. They are easy to grow, and many of them grow right back on their own after winter. This year my chives, thyme just popped right up and are going gangbusters. I did have to put in new cilantro and parsley.

    What wonderful friends to come help in the garden! I’ve been busily working outside, my favorite thing to do, and am thinking of headed to the nursery to begin buying annuals for containers. With the nice weather this week, I imagine the annuals will fly off the shelves. BTW, raised beds and containers are the way to go around here with our rocky soil. “Thumbs up”!

    Enjoyed your blog yesterday on air plants and tried to comment three times but each time after I hit Post Comment, my comment disappeared into the air. Hopefully today the problem is fixed on both ends. I’m quite challenged with any gardening at the moment as I’m in the Arizona desert in an attached single-family home (aka duplex) with three exposures: an east-facing courtyard to which the water has been turned off so plan on container gardening, a south side of the house with some very boring desert plants and a west-facing patio (southwest corner of house) with no covering that gets overheard sun all day. I also have a screened portion of the patio where I want to have a part of a herb garden, but I also have three cats who claim the patio and one of whom is very fond of sampling anything green, so any plants have to be high up. What excited me yesterday was the air plants for the area behind my corner kitchen sink with two windows. Since I’m also somewhat vertically challenged, I need something easy to work with there and the air plants seem perfect. It will probably be quite sometime before I actually do much but I love being inspired and you always do that.

      Great, I hope you get to try the air plants! :-)

      And yeah, I don’t know what was happening with comments. Everything was getting lost or going to spam. Hoping it is all solved now! Thanks for trying!

    I have done square foot gardening for years. If you have limited space, this is a great way to maximize the space you have. I have 4 raised beds….stacked Tennessee Field Stone …that are approximately 4′ square. Although the one that contains all my herbs is round with a large Savannah Girl statue in the middle. In the 3 beds I am growing spinach, radishes, broccoli, carrots, beets, onions, cabbage and Chinese cabbage. In a few weeks I will plant yellow squash and zucchini in a bed that is near shrubs in my yard. Check out Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew(not sure I spelled that right) Amazon has his books and he has an updated version out. Great resource!

      Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to get that book! I love the idea of raised beds with stone, I bet they are lovely! And I’m hoping to get a round planter too!

    Good luck with your garden, you have some great ideas going on! I just have flowers and herbs so far but hope to try some container vegetables soon. I am really enjoying my new rosemary plant this year, my favorite newbie this year!

    I couldn’t get anything to grow in a whiskey barrel! I finally ended up getting rid of it. It had drainage, good sun, etc. What was I doing wrong?!

    I bought two of those very barrels and used my Home Depot Garden Club coupon when I bought two dwarf pear trees to plant in them. Anxious to see your garden take shape. I love gardening and all the fresh veggies right outside my door!
