{Inspired By} Navy Blue

There’s just something so beautiful about navy blue, isn’t there? I love the way it looks when mixed with neutrals, especially against white. I came across these photos from S B Long Interiors and was smitten by all the navy!

I love the sophistication that the navy blue accents bring to these spaces, while still having a fun coastal style. I adore the pretty woodwork, navy and white stair runner, the gorgeous lighting…I love it all!

A few accent pillows, coffee table books, and trim on the drapes are the perfect touches of navy in this neutral living room.

I started a Pinterest board called ‘Navy Love’ and have been pinning lots of pretty navy things! Come see what I’ve been pinning!

Do you have any navy in your home?

PS. In case you missed it, I shared my Summer House Tour on Monday as part of the Summer Tour of Homes hosted by The Shabby Creek Cottage! The tours continue on all week, so keep checking back to see more beautiful homes!

Just like to note that one of this past season’s Pottery Barn catalogs was all about the color indigo. It was so good looking! Navy blue pairs so well also with aqua, which really sends me! I’ve saved some pages from that particular issue, along with their paint selections, for a way-down-the-road living/dining room project.

Oh yes, I saw that at Pottery Barn and love it too! I love how well it works with so many colors.

Hi, thanks for the inspiration for navy! I have loved navy blue since I was a kid. Always picking out navy paint or paper for my room when my mom was having a redo. My master suite is painted in a color by SW called Needlepoint Navy, and it is exactly as you picture it. That sort of soft faded navy you would see in a needlepoint pillow. I have always paired navy with yellow or red (red being my fav) I am currently showing it with red and white farm scene toile. Window valances, shams, and a king bed width wall of drapes is just enough. In the sitting room I have the seat of my country French desk chair covered in the fabric. I love seeing it with neutrals, as we will be downsizing and moving to FL and all the homes I look at (that don’t need to be repainted….think tropical parrot gone wild) are neutrals. The navy looks great with it. I plan to have a slip cover made for my formal three cushion sofa in a neutral and I have seen two wing in a few places that are also slipcovered in a neutral with a navy stripe going down the center and onto the ottoman. I plan to purchase two of these to go with my sofa. I am slowing painting out all of my wood furniture in ASCP, so everything will be light and bright. I do have a question for you….in looking at your pictures I noticed the grey kitchen cabinets. Can you share the color on them? I am about to paint my island and am leaning towards the greys, my kitchen is all white cabinets with soapstone countertops and stainless appliance for the most part. I would love to paint out the bottom cabinets in a grey and leave the uppers white. Your grey is very appealing. Thanks for all the great ideas, bty, I stopped in the middle of your tour of summer home and jump to Antropologie and purchased the little rabbit, It is perfect for the new colors I will be using in master in the new house. I have tons of stuff for the new home, now all I need is the home!

Thanks for the blue inspiration, Melissa. Many years ago I heard a TV decorator say that blue just wasn’t a good design color. I was crushed to know that almost every room in my house was not “good design” because I love blue and it was everywhere. But I stayed true to what I loved and didn’t run to the paint and fabric store. I’ve changed some of the colors in my home since then but still love blue and will always have it in my home. It can serve as both a neutral (depending on the hue, like navy) and as a splash of bold color – very usable and versatile. By the way, it seems I am noticing more grasscloth these days. Even though it is always classic, things do ebb and flow. Trending, do you think?

I agree on navy, it is a great neutral that should work as a foundation even as styles and colors evolve! That is sad that someone would say blue wasn’t a good design color. And I absolutely love grasscloth. Always have, you are right! It is a classic. I’ve wanted it in this house since we moved in but haven’t taken the plunge yet. Maybe it’s time. I love that whole British Colonial vibe with the navy, the white, the grasscloth. It’s just always lovely.

I love navy blue! The chair in the first picture is BEAUTIFUL! Faith, what a bummer! Just so you know I love blue too and will include it in my home even if it isn’t a good “design choice” :)

These pics make me second guess my colors.. The navy looks SO crisp and lovely against the grays, linens and dark grass cloth. I’m absolutely in love. But I’ve already started this train and I’d like for it to look as though the pieces belong.. Sigh. Next house!

Sounds like you need to do a little evolving, Vee! If you don’t like what you have in your home it doesn’t really matter if it is stylish or not. :-) Maybe you should put your navy stuff up for sale, I bet a lot of ladies would snap it right up! :-) Or just start adding in the colors you really love. I think navy is a great staple to start with so you could add in whatever else you like and eventually snuff out the navy if you really don’t like it!

I love navy blue. I have shades of blue throughout my house but my dining room is painted navy blue. It is such a classic color. Love these photos!

I am doing my nursery in navy, white and grey even though I dont know the sex of the baby yet. I figured that I know that I love the color combo and can always accessorize with accent colors to make it more boyish or girlish. Im thinking of doing kelly green accents if its a boy and coral colored accents if its a girl.

We will find out in August! Almost there!

We moved two years ago and I decided to paint the one large wall in our living room/dining room a dark blue. I made seat cushions for our black dining chairs and a valance using navy and white buffalo check fabric. Everyone comments how they love this space; and I did all this before navy became popular!
