{Out to See} Sylvia Beach Hotel

My husband and I have a yearly tradition of escaping to the coast to Newport, Oregon. Actually, it was a yearly tradition years ago when our girls were small, but we skipped a bunch of years since our family had a beach house to call our own. But, last week, we decided it was time to relive some old memories and make the trip down to Newport!

We are so glad we did, there is something so wonderful about reconnecting with your long ago past and keeping up on making new memories with your spouse. We’ve been together since I was 19 so our past goes way back heheh.

{Out to See} Sylvia Beach Hotel

So what is our favorite little spot to stay? Sylvia Beach Hotel. It’s a quirky place for book lovers and writers and anyone who just loves to escape from it all into another world. There are no TVs, no phones, no internet. Just the sound of the waves outside your window. That’s our kind of retreat!

Luxury hotels and resorts with all the amenities are nice sometimes, but we are charmed by the unpretentiousness and solitude of this old favorite Bed & Breakfast. It’s not for everyone, but for us it’s a special place to get away and be able to hear yourself think again. A perfect place to just BE.

Each of the rooms is designed to showcase an author. We’ve stayed in so many of the rooms over the years, they are just all fun and unique. Nothing fancy, but that’s what’s so great about this place.

Honestly, I almost didn’t even want to tell anyone about it because it feels like OUR private getaway, but you know I must love you all enough to share it with you. Just don’t take our room when we want to come stay there. That’s all I ask.

We spent time eating (we had this pretty salad across the street at April’s!), walking on the beach, checking out the local shops, drinking coffee and mostly just reading and writing. We even bought some art which I will share soon, too. We’ve always had a tradition of bringing home art from our travels so it was fun to bring home new memories from this trip.

I didn’t get a good shot of the hotel from the water or of the beach, but it is an amazing beach front property with an incredible view. The weather was so beautiful the entire week, windy but warm!

This was my spot for most of our stay. A quirky little corner of the upstairs library overlooking the water. I was working on a very big project that I almost can’t believe is happening and I can’t wait to share with you :-).  Don’t you love me for keeping a secret?

I totally agree with you Melissa about preferring a B&B over a luxurious hotel most of the time. Such a pretty place and it is so awesome how you re-hashed your tradition of this place with your husband.
    Happy Day,

These photos are making me want to go on vacation right now! B&B’s are really the best for R&R.

We just returned from a visit to the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, specifically the Keweenaw (Houghton)….home of the Michigan Tech Huskies. My husband and I both went to college there, and later moved back for three years while my husband served as the commandant of cadets for the Air Force ROTC detachment. We will go back as often as possible to walk on the board walk of the Portage Canal while watching water crafts of all kinds zoom up and down under the lush green canopy of trees that crowd the landscape. Hiking, biking, swimming and enjoying the company of the worlds friendliest people, the “Yoopers”! Beware of the over 200 inches of snow that transform the visual from about December through April!

I lived in Lake Oswego for 13 years and loved going to the coast. I particularly liked the aquarium in Newport Beach and always wanted to stay in the Sylvia Beach Hotel. We also loved Cannon Beach and the Stephanie Inn. We go back for several weeks every other summer and love seeing our friends and, of course, the wonderful Oregon summers :-)

Me too! Oregon is wonderful. Our family beach house is near Cannon Beach. (I lived in Lake Oswego, too! For most of my life!)

This year is the second our family (hubby, 2 kids, my mom, my sister, and my bro-in-law) have stayed in a log home/cabin in the woods in Wisconsin. It’s 10 minutes from Baraboo but far enough out for sandhill cranes, tree frogs, turtles in the pond, deer, and other wildlife. When we’re done with our site seeing for the day, we spend the evenings on the porch overlooking woods and hills.

what a charming hotel, and great pictures! I think they’re going to get a flush of new visitors after everyone sees this post. my little escape is Skamania Lodge in the Columbia Gorge. I love to drive out for the day and sit out back or in the beautiful lobby and gaze out the floor to ceiling windows. I love it best when it’s cloudy and rainy, it’s so snug. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll actually stay overnight! :-)

Oh yes, that is a beautiful spot! I can’t remember if I ever spent the night there or not but now that you mentioned it, I might have to pay another visit :-)

    Oh that looks *heavenly*!!
My husband and I run away to a little coastal town near Monterey, California named Pacific Grove. It’s walking distance to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and not far from Carmel-by-the-Sea but it’s quiet and just perfect. We always stay at The Gosby House Inn, I’m addicted to a good B&B. Dangit, now I’m craving a Pacific Grove getaway!!

Naniboujou Lodge in Grand Marais MN. Just as you enjoyed on your trip , there are no televisions, no wi if, and the peace of mind that comes with being disconnected. Not to mention the glorious and beautiful view of the Inland Sea Lake Superior. It’s gorgeous there. You and your husband would love it. Naniboujou.com to see the gorgeous painting of the lodges great room. Check it out.

I have more photos of the Yaquina Bay bridge than, I’m sure, the stock photo places have. It’s a running joke: either Mt. Hood or the bridge! My most favorite escape would be Timberline Lodge in the summer!

How wonderful! I love that the rooms are author-themed. I’ve never been to the NW but this looks like a perfect getaway. Years ago my husband and I stayed at the Wicklow Inn, an adorable B&B in Chimney Rock, NC, outside of Asheville. Still one of our favorite getaways ever. Gorgeous in the fall, with a creek running down the mountain that you can hear from the open windows in the rooms.

My husband and I have recently found a WONDERFUL, peaceful, quiet spot with wonderful amenities (as long as you can live without internet & AC). It is a wall tent, complete with a private pond, deck, gorgeous interior furnishings and a beautiful bathroom. A lot of people refer to it as “glamping,” which you’ll understand when you see the chandelier! It is one of the many spots to stay at Paint Bank, VA. The Depot Lodge and the Swinging Bridge restaurant are the main spots, but they have the tent, a caboose, a refurbished camper and cabins as well. http://www.thedepotlodge.com is the website where you can see pictures.

Getting away like that really lets you recharge. Our getaway spot is our sibling shared cottage at, coincidentally, Sylvan Beach on the shores of Lake Michigan. What’s really nice is that most of the families have been there in the summer for generations and you have grown up together. My favorite thing is sitting in the rocking chair on the front porch, hearing the sound of the waves and reading a good book–so peaceful.

My husband and I escape to Lakeside Ohio whenever we can. This is a great family vacation spot and has turned into a wonderful trip to take with our friends. We rent a large house together now that our children are grown and on their own. (but they all seem to find time opportunities to join us) Check out the website. This is a Chautauqua Summer Retreat.

My husband and I visited Newport this past fall and saw this place…didn’t get to stay there, but maybe next time :) Favorite US getaway- Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge in Big Pine Key, FL. About 30 minutes north of Key West. My family from ATL has spent Christmas there for the past 8 years or so, and it is such a wonderful place. If you ever find yourself in that part of the country I highly, highly recommend it! http://www.bpkfl.com/

My husband and I have stayed several times at The Overleaf Lodge in Yachats, Or.
It is the most amazing and relaxing place I have ever been. You should check it out the next time you go to the coast.

Sounds lovely! We just got back from El Nido Cabins in Tieton, WA. It’s a small community west of Yakima wine valley and it is surrounded by cherry, apple and pear orchards. Nothing much to do there except relax and watch the birds, butterflies and admire the sunsets over the hills. The cabins were so cute and clean…the only place to stay there by the way. There is a small town square and a very good Panaderia (mexican bakery) across the street.

Newport is such a perfect place on the Oregon Coast. I love going there also. Some of the waterfront attractions are showing their age, but I still love walking the docks, looking at the boats, listening to the sea lions and taking pictures of the Yaquina Bay Bridge.

If there were jobs there, I’d probably move in a minute.

I remember the days when I started my blog and said hello to the unknown faces of the internet. How quickly things had changed and 7 years passed.
