Christmas Dreaming {Day 11: Loving Fall}

One of my favorite things about fall is getting excited for Christmas! I know, we haven’t even had Thanksgiving yet but still, I can’t help but look forward to Christmas (especially when it is still early enough to enjoy the process of planning and decorating!)

Last year I kept things really simple and it was wonderful. No stress, no big mess, no big expectations, and yet just enough decor to feel festive and add a special enjoyment to the season. I plan to keep Christmas on the simple side again, but for some unknown reason I’m in the mood to perhaps do just a little more this year. I’m still not planning on dragging out ALL THE BINS, because to be honest I get overwhelmed by the thought of a lot of STUFF filling up my house.

I really like the simplicity of a Christmas statement that doesn’t rely on a lot of excess. Yet, at the same time, there is something special about doing something a little out of the ordinary for Christmas. Something a little more festive, whimsical, or beautiful or magical.

I’ll share more of my plans and some inspiration soon, I’ve already started a little bit of Christmas decorating! These photos are from last year (you can see my Christmas tour here)!

I know a lot of bloggers are decorating already for holiday sponsored posts, but I’m happily decorating just for me, and my family (and of course, I’ll open my house for another online Christmas house tour in December so you’ll all be invited over!). I am very excited about savoring the season in every possible way!

PS. Did you get a chance to introduce yourself and tell me a bit about where you live in the comments of the Home Sweet Home post? I’m SO happy with how many of you shared your stories with me! It’s so fun to read them, thank you!

Is anyone else out there already decorating for Christmas? :)

I haven’t started decorating yet, but I have been planning for quite some time. The decorations will likely go up next week & I can’t wait!

I am itching to start decorating for Christmas but if I’m hosting Thanksgiving dinner do you think I need to keep the fall decorations out. Maybe just one wreath? a santa? some tinsel ;) You’re house is SO gorgeous – I loved your feature in BHG this month. Congrats!

Hi Melissa, This time of year my creative brain goes in over drive. I can’t help myself. No actually decorating yet, but I have all the plans in order. However I did make my Christmas wreath for this year. I had to, when you see it you will know why!!! Very excited about it!!! I am with you in the, “Enjoy the Process!!” My mantra!! Can’t wait to follow along with you and your plans!! You always make a lovely, warm and welcoming home.

This is my favorite time to enjoy the Christmas season – still early enough to really slow down, savor and enjoy the planning and creative thinking, before all the stress hits. I drive everyone around me crazy with my holiday spirit in October/November :) If my family would let me, I would be decorating now because it takes so long, it feels like a “chore” and I don’t enjoy the process as much.

Oh my goodness, you tempt me so. I’ve set a tradition to start almost immediately after we eat a home cooked Thanksgiving supper at home. If I’m feeling spry, I’ll start that night (and egg my guests to help, too)! My favorite part is picking out a real tree with my hubby, a custom we started when we bought our first home last year. Nevertheless, I unabashedly admit the Charlie Brown Christmas tunes are on as I type. ;)

Today, before I got this post on my Feedly, I was browsing your blog for past Christmas decorating ideas. Somehow I did not get this decorating gene and I so badly want to make my home festive. Not overly so, but still, I would like to do simple decorating.

If you could focus a few blogposts on how people who did not get the decorating gene can make their homes pretty, I would love that. Thank you.

p.s. I am a counselor and author and often share your posts on my author FB page because I think beauty is crucial to our souls.

Thank you, I will definitely keep sharing ideas and hope to help as much as I can here on the blog, I think that is a GREAT TOPIC! Also, I have several books coming out next year that I think might help you with simple decor ideas and encouragement in general. Thanks again!

Yes! Yes, to Christmas decorating in November! It takes a while to get everything up and festive, why not enjoy it for as long as possible?! I’m going all out this weekend. Bring it on!

I agree. I’ve pared back considerably the past two years. A lot of what I’ve done is more “winter” with a few festive touches. That way, the “winter” decor can stay up until time to put up spring decor!
I never ever decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving, making a big deal out of “one holiday at a time” and such. However, this year I’m working outside of the home, my husband and I both are doing “extra” jobs-he’s a painter and I’m an event planner on the side-so we’re busy, busy, and we have 3 active boys. I have managed to agree to host 2 events in my home the week after Thanksgiving. That means getting busy earlier than usual. I’m starting in our master suite this weekend! LOL!

I am the same way with more “winter” decor that can stay up longer! I think when you are hosting parties it makes it all the more important to start early! :-) Hope you had fun starting your decor this weekend!

Hey Melissa! I’ve been thinking about Christmas decorations since September…no joke! I am really excited for this year because its my first Christmas I get to spend with Wes (my husband) and its our first Christmas as a married couple! Double win! Wes typically goes to Kenya to his parents house but we decided to stay in the States this year. We are hosting and having his parents, siblings, and grandparents over! We will be hosting my family the week prior; they will come from PA! I feel really blessed and honored to be able to host everyone in our tiny house…it will definitely be cozy but what an opportunity to host our first Christmas for both sides of our families! I’ve been scheming my decoration plans for months so hopefully I can pull it off and our house will be really festive and inviting!

Melissa, it is refreshing to see you excited about decorating for Christmas because I am so not ready….LOL! I have so many other design projects going on that I dread to even think about decorating my home for Christmas. Hopefully, I will get more into the mood once I began working with my seasonal decorating clients…at least my hubby and children are hoping so…LOL!!! Thanks for sharing Melissa!

I know how it goes when you are SO busy with other projects. I’m the same way right now with writing books, I just feel like I would like to stop the world to give myself some free time, but somehow it keeps going! So every once in awhile I just shut everything else out and give myself little blocks of time to decorate for Christmas. I LOVE IT! Good luck :-).

My daughter always says it’s too early to think about Christmas, but it’s only next month! It’s sooner than we think and the time goes fast. I enjoy your simple Christmas decorating. I don’t like houses that are over the top. Love your blog!

I started a couple weeks ago with a few little things! Checked through the “bins” and made a table runner and tree skirt to go with my new tartan ribbon for the tree! :-). I don’t like to wait too long or it all seems too rushed (and I like to have a freshly cleaned house by the New Year) let the Holidays begin!
    Happy Birthday Jesus! Michelle

Melissa I am interested in where you bought the plaid material that is on your white table. Just gorgeous! Love all the greenery you have throughout the house. Pictures are beautiful from 2013 Christmas Tour.

I need your input on choosing a trim and wall paint color that will be used throughout a spec house that is being built for us. We live in Portland and its a craftsmen style home. Everything I am pinning is white or light gray, but I am going crazy trying to decide. After we are in the house for awhile we will change the paint in some of the rooms, but for now it’s one color for the trim/cabinets and one color for the walls. What would you do?

When I was younger, I’d pull out the Christmas music in September! I couldn’t wait for my Christmas Day birthday. I’m able to wait until after Thanksgiving now at 58, but what’s not to love about this time of year?!

I also love to nest, just spent time baking cranberry, pumpkin muffins, bread and tiny cakes to freeze and have on hand for gifts….using fresh cranberries, fresh pumpkin I baked myself….with the snow blowing and the pond already frozen, so cozy with a fire in the fireplace. I love your posts and would enjoy winning. But either way enjoying my home. God has grace piously provided.
