So, do you have any Home Goals yet? I know of several of you who used the Home Goal sheet, filled it out and have a plan! YES! That’s the first step so if you haven’t yet filled it out, print it and ponder it today! I promise, it will help you start to focus and best of all, you’ll feel good when you start to see progress. Home Goals can be project oriented, decluttering or organization, or even family goals for improved life at home.

Home Goals 2015 Motivation {A Sense of Well-Being}

I’ve been thinking about my Home Goals for this year for quite some time now. To be honest, I have been having trouble nailing them down in part because this year will be so busy for me I want to make sure I don’t bite off more than I can chew. I guess that should be a goal right there, now that I typed that line I realize I do have a goal…to stay sane. So, my first goal is to stay sane! CHECK! That’s going on the list immediately. See? This is why I blog, I need to inspire myself. Ha! So, anyway….

I want to make sure that I’m working towards goals that inspire me to move forward in progress with something I feel is worthwhile, and not just a list of things I think I *should* do but really don’t want or need to do.

Here’s a good question to think about if you are setting some bigger Home Goals:

Are we prepared _________(financially, health-wise, time-wise, emotionally, family-wise, stress-wise, physically, etc) to invest time or money in this particular goal? If it isn’t the best time for some reason, is there a simpler way to accomplish it or make progress without sacrificing other important goals?

Success depends on your motivation and determination to stick with something, so it’s helpful to consider these barriers and potential joy-stealers up front!

Even though it’s important to me to make sure a goal is worth pursuing (especially if it’s a bigger goal like a remodel or big time consuming project), it’s also important to make sure I’m not just looking for excuses to NOT set goals! If I decide to not set any goals or keep them too small out of fear (of not succeeding, or any other worries that are really just unfounded or unnecessary excuses) then I’m limiting myself and the change I really want is unlikely to happen.

I think the setting of the goal can inspire you to think more creatively about how to accomplish something daunting (rather than not trying at all due to an excuse you set up for yourself for why you couldn’t do it) .

I love this little encouragement from Yoda to DO, not just say “I’ll try.” (for the record, this is the first and probably the last time you’ll watch a video of Yoda on my blog, ha!)

How often do you hear or say “I’ll try” and inside your head you know that this actually means “I will try if all the stars align and everything is perfectly set up for my success. Otherwise, it isn’t going to happen.” The truth is, there is no perfect alignment of stars where goals will be realized. Most achievements in life happen because we put one foot in front of the other to MAKE them HAPPEN. If we didn’t put forth any effort, I guess the result would be miracles rather than achievements as a result of goals. Right? Ha. So perhaps some of us are holding out for a miracle that our house is going to get more organized,  decluttered, cleaner, repainted so it will be more beautiful to us, or that our family will eat dinner at the table more often, or any other goal we might dream of (weight loss? fitness goals? marriage health? whatever!).

We need to take some sort of action to see results, and it’s sometimes hard work. And if a miracle happens along the way, too, then that’s great! No one’s gonna be mad about that.

If bigger goals just seem too overwhelming during this season of life, break them down or find a few small ones and work on those! Small goals are my favorite! Cleaning a closet, painting one wall, or updating a light fixture can be motivating and encouraging.

Now, for a first look at my Home Goals!

I’ll have to go over the goals more in detail and let them unfold over time here on the blog, but here’s what they all boil down to:

My main goal for my home this year might sound like an kind of an abstract touchy-feely one, but I think it is one that will spur me on to many things that really matter to me.

I want to invest in the well-being of our family.

That “sense of well-being” encompasses so many things for me.

While I seek contentment with what I already have, I’m inspired to grow and do better at managing my home, our schedule and organization for my own personal well-being and that of my family. While we’ve made good progress on our home, and I’ve learned so much about managing it better over the years (and can I just pause here to say I’m getting more and more excited to share those lessons and stories through my first book when it comes out in March?), there is still so much I want to improve for the well-being of our family. If I can filter my goals through that lens of how a particular goal will impact our well-being, then I can be more confident in investing my time or even money into it.

Home Goals 2015 Motivation {A Sense of Well-Being}Lettering by Molly Jacques

If the process of achieving a particular goal will stress us out too much in this season of life, set us back in some undesirable way (maybe overextend ourselves financially or otherwise), or not positively impact our well-being in a significant way, I either want to adjust the goal or scale it back to something more manageable that WILL be a blessing to our family, or I don’t want to deal with it yet. There are a lot of things I would love to do around my home that might just need to wait for another season of life.

So with that “well-being of our family” umbrella over our activities this year, here are a few things I’m including on my list of home improvement goals for this year:

1. Continue to declutter and get organized: Focus on the positive impact those changes will make in many areas of my life, rather than dreading the chore of actually doing them. I have several projects on my list that are begging for my attention. (More details to come on some of those projects!).

2. Master bathroom project: We might simply paint and decorate it this year, or it might be a more extensive update. I really want the more extensive update, but I’m still wrestling through the pros and cons of each option. I won’t move ahead on anything bigger than I think we can handle, but I don’t want to leave it as (my husband and I are DETERMINED to make progress in some way as a gift to ourselves!) (I’ll update you on the BEFORE pics and the options I’m considering in an upcoming post).

3. Master closet revamp: This was a hopeful goal at the start of last year that I decided to delay once the year got underway and I assessed my schedule. This year I have to do it (even though I’ll be even busier!) (I’ll explain why we waited, and the new situation in an upcoming post, as well!).

4. Healthy family goals: These involve some changes to our home, new habits and activities we are wanting to incorporate so we can stay strong, healthy and happy and SANE. I’ll share an easy one this week and more in upcoming weeks!

There’s a start! Now it’s your turn. What are some of your own home goals? Share with us? Do a post with your goals and link up your post in the comments? I want to hear what you are working on! Delurk!

Thank you for making the Family Health Goals part of the picture for the New Year. Now that it is just my hubby and myself, we hope to eat more organic and walk more daily at either Seahhurst Park or around the trails at the Island. During these walks, we want to spend it communicating not just with nature but with each other in a positive way. PS But we also hope to get our Big Projects on the map and finished too!!!

We bought my husbands childhood home 3 years ago. It needed everything. We removed the kitchen shortly after moving in along with several walls and the ceiling. We have been living with unfinished everything while we work on it. We hire certain things out, do some ourselves. This is the year we are finishing the inside, getting an actual kitchen, closing in the ceiling and hanging lights instead of bare bulbs. After our last house that we renovated the whole 10 years we lived there , I said I wouldn’t do it again. Then this house came up for sale and here we are doing it again. What has taken me 20 years to figure out is that renovating goes a lot smoother when I get rid of all the random crap everywhere. I have realized that clutter must go before I do anything. So before we enter our final interior finishing phase we started getting rid of stuff. It is painful because of attachments to things. Also after you have moved crap with you for 20 years it feels permanent, like you cannot rid yourself of it. I started last summer sending a giant Waterford crystal bowl to a consignment shop. I have lugged this useless item around, it weighed 20 lbs and was worth $900 new. I received it as a wedding gift from a rich relative who told me I had to keep it forever. Well I sold it for $70 and what a weight was lifted off my shoulders. This made me want to let everything I don’t need go. The less I keep the less new cupboards I need to buy. I replaced a wall with Windows so there is no room for upper cupboards. Best decision ever but means less storage. I won’t be ordering my kitchen until I have gotten down to the items I actually use and need to make space for. It takes a couple of times to me to go through things before all useless items are culled. All projects need to start with decluttering.

I totally agree; I bet that was a big weight off you! I have done that too. It is especially hard when it relates to items our deceased parents gave us before or after their death. I try to think of them smiling as I give it to charity and how someone else gets to now feel their love…

Love your blog. Makes my morning:) Need to think on goals a little more but this year I do plan to little by little replace any big box store or items of decor that aren’t meaningful to my family and I with items we really love and care about. My husbands Aunt passed away three years ago and I’ve had a portfolio of her art in my upstairs guest/storage room this whole time. Ive been going through it and replacing the random “just needed something hanging here” art with hers and it’s been making me fall in love with my home all over again.

This way of thinking and breaking goals down is so good, Melissa. I need to think through all this but I know my first goal has to be to get well enough to actually be able to do the work (and if I wasn’t able, that would change the goals, wouldn’t it?) Today is the maybe the last appointment with the orthopedist. On Sunday we were with out DIL and talked a lot about their house and ours – a big picture goal to finish both this year. Hubby helps them with some of their remodeling. Then we were with our other son & DIL, who have a goal of home ownership. It was really fun to talk about the general goals but also the idea of a family compound where we all live nearby each other. That wasn’t from us but them! It was fun to talk about why this would be desirable in the first place and to hear what they were hoping for as they build their new lives and families. Anyway, I will look forward to using this planning sheet – thanks!

I love how you break this down on a sheet, Melissa. I’m a visual/paper girl! I also like what you say about doing what you can financially afford. I think we have lots of dreams and goal (I do!), and it’s good to dream, but we have to be realistic. I think I’ll start with our garage … Healthy family goals is a must as well. It always feels so refreshing in January to talk it out … Great post!

I love your blog but never comment! What an inspiration you are and I can’t wait to see your book. I would like to revamp our narrow hallway so it functions as a command center and organization spot for coats and backpacks.

Any minute I’ll start writing down my 2015 goals – ha ha! Actually, I’ve been mentally working at it for a couple of weeks. Even though I’m still experiencing “but it was only the middle of October just two weeks ago” syndrome and there are too many “have to do’s” in the wings, I’ve been reflecting on what I have accomplished over the past two years since I moved into my forever home, most recently the gorgeous knotty pine TV armoire I just finished retrofitting, (including a new shelf I built (with the help of my brilliant brother in Missouri) so that only my monitor and the phone are on my desk while all my other computer stuff, previously above and below the desk, are now behind closed doors. I’ve been reflecting too on what I’ve learned and the wonderful people I’ve learned from (Maria Killam was my first inspiration back in 2009 and almost every one of her posts turns into a mini-class for me, Kate at CentsationalGirl intrigued me with her post about wood-look porcelain tile floors back in 2013 and then wowed me with her Nevada home finished floors in 2014, and you, Melissa, offered that wonderful “find your style” exercise that resulted in my realization that the country cottage style in Prescott, AZ that I saw in my mind for years could blend beautifully with the slightly Spanish bungalow style of my Sun City West, AZ home which I love, and the past year has been a blast pulling it all together. Now for another cup of coffee and a pen to start writing.

P.S. Suggestion for a post: Why “minimalism” (saw half a dozen posts about it this week) is actually organization and decluttering taken to the edge of the earth and falling off . My take: Minimalist rooms have no “soul”.

It’s always good to write down your goals. It’s also a good idea to break down larger goals into smaller easier to achieve tasks. You feel so much more accomplished and ready to tackle the nest item on your list!

I would like to declutter my cabinets and closets. My house looks good until you try and open a door and then…watch out! I love the Yoda quote too, I am going to DO something today :)

Great post and very thought provoking. I have not started my list of goals yet. I am still in the after Holiday tired mode so I give myself the freedom to take it easy the month of January, BUT it is in the back of my mind for sure and your guidelines are good to follow.

    Great and inspiring post Melissa!!

I loved it and your goals are awesome, I especially love the well-being of my family one. That is something important and a lot of people forget about! I have a few personal, house and business goals that I want to achieve this year :). Ill just keep it short and sweet with my home goals, I want to organize my home desk “office” area, do a few DIY projects to make my home more functional. Organize my pantry and overall these home projects and goals are for me to fall in love with my space again.

Thanks for sharing! Good luck on your 2015 goals!

First and foremost, congratulations on the recognition your blog has received! Seems to me you’ve already accomplished one tremendous goal right there. I appreciate your suggestions for how to bring organization to the goal-setting process. Very helpful suggestions indeed. I tend to start off the year with a substantial list of goals and only manage to tackle a few of them, so I’m trying something different this year. One main goal….drink more water. How about that? My feeling is if I achieve some short-term success with just this one simple goal, then it will hopefully give me the momentum to accomplish a few others. Just typing the words is a good reminder. I need a few more glasses of H2O today :-).

All the best to you (and everyone!) in accomplishing this year’s goals and for continued success with this wonderful blog.

Melissa, I love your goals worksheet! I really like how you have included the desired feeling, specific projects, decluttering, and bad habits all in one place. We’re using a separate sheet for each “problem area” of our home (e.g., one for the living room, one for the family room, the office, the garage, the exterior, pantry/closets, etc.). I just added your question about “Are we prepared…?” to the top of each sheet. This is such a useful resource – thanks so much for creating and sharing it with us!

    Hi Melissa!
I love your blog. I have a copy of the November (?) BHG featuring you and your kitchens. I feel like you are a dear friend and even thought of sending you my copy! (Let me know if you would like me to!) Thanks for the directive to delurk. It worked for me today and I needed a push. Last year my whole focus was career…work was overwhelming. This January I have a new role…more travel but hopefully less overall stress. I am working on finding balance and being present with my family as well.
Room: The kitchen!!! We started gutting it on January 12. (Contractor…our design). We currently have cabinets in…lots left to do. Appliances come Friday (fridge is backordered until February 12. Grr.) we have had a poorly functioning and run down kitchen since we moved in 2 years ago but didn’t have the finances to do what we wanted until now. Delayed gratification is not something I’m good at…(one of the reasons why I’m chubby). :)
4 projects to work on: staining cabinets in master bathroom (bye honey oak. Hi espresso). Refinishing 2 tables (family antiques in need of love). Wood planked wall in den and kitchen. (Need hubby for this). New lights in laundry room (again need hubby so will be when I wear him down)…and a command center in the laundry room. Yes…this is actually more than 4.:)
4 areas to declutter: pantry. Kids bathroom (mine and guest bath need a little too).My office (biggie…lots of built ins stuffed full of stuff). Garage.
Habit to break: not having a place for everything. Once I do I stay organized.
New memories and traditions: family walks…maybe getting a puppy. (Lost our 13.5 year old dog before Christmas…still grieving )…being more appreciative and grateful for what we have by helping others more…(also maybe a conversation question jar for the dinner table)….
Whew…that felt great! I need to copy what I just wrote down!
Oh..and I’m delurking on blogs and maybe starting my own…so family and friends can see what were up to!
Thanks for being an inspiration as always!!
    Xo
