Healthy Home Fragrances {Scents of Well Being}

Thanks so much for your great comments on the Home Goals yesterday! I hope you’ll add your goals to the comments as you decide on them. Then maybe we can look back next year and see how well we did! YES! Accountability.

One of the things I talked about investing in this year is a sense of well being at our house. So today I thought I would share a little twist on that topic with another home-related topic I love to talk about, the SCENTS of well-being at home. I LOVE a good smelling home, don’t you? There’s so many ways to make your home more lovely, but scent is definitely high on the list for me.

This Christmas I bought everyone in our little family an essential oil diffuser for their bedrooms. I LOVE IT! Ever since, I’ve had the best smelling house ever! Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m still into my Anthro candles for occasional ambience, but I am now a wee bit obsessed with diffusing.

I have had an amazing naturopathic doctor for 25 years and the advice I got from him back then and things I’ve learned since have been really life changing (I learned things years ago from my doctor that many people are just figuring out now or still don’t know.)

Ever since those early days of being introduced to healthy remedies I have been very interested in natural choices for our family, so I’m SOOO HAPPY about how well essential oils scent our home.

MAKE YOUR OWN LINEN SPRAY! I love making linen sprays (try about 15 drops of lavender essential oil and 15 drops of orange essential oil, or whatever combination you like with 1 1/2 cups of water. Some people like to also add 1-3 T of witch hazel or alcohol if you have it on hand to help blend the oil and water). I use blue glass spray bottles like these. See more natural home scent recipes here.

But I don’t know what took me so long to try a diffuser? Game changer. (Updated 2016: now I have SEVERAL diffusers and my life is forever changed! Feel free to ask me more about various diffusers and essential oils!)

I use a glass spray bottle with oils in water all the time, it’s is a quick, easy and portable way to spritz sheets or rooms. But a diffuser is really cool and now I’m addicted. The diffuser I have doesn’t use water or heat, so it keeps the oil in its natural state while it diffuses it through the air in a mist.

Everyone in our family loves their diffusers! A year ago in January our family got the flu a.k.a. the plague and I was sick and then without my energy for weeks. I rarely get sick so that was alarming. And who has time to get sick? No one. That’s when I placed my first order for oils (since my naturopathic doctor is in another state, I don’t get to go to him as much any more so I was excited to find an online source for ordering oils, mine are from Young Living and they are AMAZING!).

So while I have a zillion oils I can diffuse for the scent and use as a dietary supplement for health benefits, lately we have been using Thieves Essential Oil in hopes of preventing the plague this year. I’ll keep you posted on how that works out. So far so good :). UPDATE 2020: Five years of using oils consistently now and I haven’t been sick even once! WOW, truly grateful for my oils.

You can learn more about how to order Essential Oils and natural products here.

You’ll even get a diffuser with your premium starter essential oils kit, so check it out!

I get my diffusers and essential oils from Young Living (find out how to order essential oils and diffusers here).

Note: The reason I highly recommend getting your Young Living membership is to protect your own health. I would never risk buying essentials oils or supplements from Amazon or third party sources, you really don’t know what you are getting (check out this article on fake supplements and see how easy it is for someone to tamper with a bottle of oil)! Young Living goes through tremendous measures to ensure the integrity of their products and cares about the health of their members.

The quality and source of oils you use makes all the difference. My family uses Young Living Essential Oils because we trust the integrity and have seen results of their quality in our home. You can learn more about ordering oils here and how to get an amazing diffuser with your premium essential oils starter kit order.

So, what’s your favorite scent for the home?

I can SO relate to this post! I’ve been going down the natural path since the ’90s and have learned so much! Like you say, the doctors are just now finding out what the naturalists have been saying for years – so glad it’s finally getting mainstream! Do you watch Your Health with Dr. Richard Becker? That show is SO beneficial!! It’s like going to health class every day and learning how to better take care of yourself and your family. I will be checking out your diffusers for sure – LOVE the idea! Thanks for sharing!!

Hi Sallie! I’ll check it out, I haven’t seen that show. Thanks! Yes, I agree, I am SO glad I learned so much earlier in my life. I still have so much to learn though! Take care!

I had no idea you were in the Young Living Family!! We’ve been having such success using YL in our home as well, for two years. So nice to feel empowered to care for my family’s health and get the support doing it. The Young Living Family is amazing – love that cute diffuser, may have to get one of those and share it with my oily mom community!

Unfortunately I am prone to cluster headaches that have been known to last for up to a week. They can be debilitating. At one point I went to see a neurologist because I was convinced something was terribly wrong. I left with little explanation other than nothing was terribly wrong (thankfully), but that I am just prone. Anyway, long story short, I came down with a multiple day headache over the holidays and my MIL gave me some essential oils…miracle…I could feel the headache leaving my head, I swear! I am a new convert!

Oh Roxie, I can’t imagine how terrible that must be! I’m so happy you are feeling better and hope it stays that way!

Roxie can you share the oils you use for your headaches? My sister suffers from them and would like to know something to suggest to her.
On a side note.. I have been using Young Living a long time.. have used Thieves (diluted) on my toothpaste and have stayed healthy during flu season ever since. It also has helped with my dental visits! My numbers that they take to measure for gum disease have gone from 14 4’s to 1 in three months! Happy!!!

How long does the oil last for the diffuser? I’m loving the idea of a diffuser that doesn’t rely on a candle. I have a simple one with a tea light but the oil burns out too quickly so you have to watch it. Thanks for this wonderful post. I’m excited to research more about oils.

Hi Debbie! It lasts in the diffuser for a long time! I’ve been pleased with how long the oils last in it! :-)

Do you just pour the oil in the diffuser? Do you dilute it??
        Thanks!

To add to my prior post, I read the diffuser cycles on off over one hour. Does the scent go away after it stops or will it linger? Do you run it multiple cycles at a time? Is that ok? Thank you!

The scent lingers even after the diffuser is off. Yes, it does cycle off and on for a period of time. I think you can do it multiple times a day, I’ll have to look up the instructions again to make sure! You’re welcome!

I have a different diffuser than Melissa but based on my SIL’s (Young Living distributor) recommendation I diffuse a scent for about 20 minutes at a time and then move it to other rooms and do the same. Right now I diffuse Thieves in each room of the house at least once a day.

Thanks Kim. I got my diffuser and I have Four Thieves too. My son just came down with a low fever/cough yesterday so I started diffusing Four Thieves in different rooms!

What a great post! I’ve been using essential oils for the past year and love learning more. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I diffuse several oil combinations depending on what’s happening in my crazy home with 3 boys. What do you diffuse in your kitchen and family rooms? I also use a Thieves-like oil called Immune Strength from Rocky Mountain Oils and like to think it has lessened the severity and lengths of those common winter illnesses. My current favorite is a lavender- peppermint spray for the bathrooms.

I’ve been following your journey and blog for years now. I enjoy it so much and couldn’t help but squeal a little bit when I saw your YL bottles – with such a positive note and healthy outlook. I love it! Great points and thank you for sharing. (And I love my Young Living essential oils too.

Aw, not everything! But things that matter to me or things of a health nature I will sometimes invest a little more in. And that’s why we gave these as family Christmas gifts! :) However, with that said, there are so many diffusers at all price points, I know Young Living has one that is half as much and you can find them elsewhere too!

Melissa, I LOVE Young Living’s essential oils. I have their regular diffuser, but I’m loving your glass one! I love to diffuse citrus fresh or lemon and orange together. (there’s a lot of loves in this comment, but I do love these oils!)

I also recently discovered essential oils – my SIL uses them and got me a diffuser for Christmas! She also became a distributor for Young Living for the great discounts. Her kids have several allergies and they really need to be careful during cold/flu season because of asthma complications. She’s found that diffusing oils really boosts their immune system. I asked her if she could recommend one oil which one it would be and she said THIEVES! I’ve been diffusing it daily for several weeks now and no one in my household has been sick. Plus it smells wonderful…like Christmas! I’m definitely interested in learning more and using more essential oils too.

I purchased the starter kit a few weeks ago and can’t wait to get started diffusing. I bought the bamboo diffuser. I had used these oils probably at least 15 years ago and got out of the habit of using them. My goal this year was to start using essentials more. There are so many ways to use them. It was fun to see you use them too :)

    Melissa,
I bought the diffuser and the theives oil and love them both. I have a couple of questions for you. How long should you run your diffuser and what is the best room to put it in? I started to join Young Life as a wholesaler but I am always hesitant to give my social security number. Can you become a wholesaler without that? Love your blog and I have been reading it for a few years now. Anxious for your book release.
