Home Gratitude

“There’s nothing particularly wrong with daydreaming now and then about home improvement or a better house, but I’ve learned that what comes next can either help or hinder me.

When I’m tempted to peer over a picket fence to see if the grass is indeed greener on the other side, I know it’s time to turn around right then and there and change my perspective. The home I have is enough.”

    What if u want to feel like and stop blowing ut money on a rental n recieve one to call ur own to own n space for children.If I could use prayers and guidance to where this can lead our family to create a place to really call a home. Cause I really been wanting n yearning for a place to have a home n finacially havent been able to do that.This is more of been really just starting our own n investment.

    I would love this book. I love my home but have a tendency to always be going from room to room. I hardly ever accomplish cleaning, decorating or anything. I enjoy reading and learning how I can improve myself. This would be an awesome book to read to bring our house together and make it a home.

    This article open my eyes to how I have never been content in any home I lived and how I always want that bigger house. I can even see how I have my son now 18 doing the same thing, not being content/grateful for what he has. I am recently divorce and I can now in some ways I did burn my home down!
    Thank you for allowing to ask God once in for all for his for forgiveness and to truly begin to put all my empty rooms in my spirit back with him.

    I hear what you’re saying, but can’t quite get to the point of contentment and it’s frustrating. My husband and I are struggling big time with our next step. Do we stay here, do we look for a bigger place? We can’t decide what’s right. While we love the uniqueness of our home and the street/neighborhood, things are changing – a few houses on the street going a bit “iffy” with owners is one. But the biggy is feeling cramped here. Though it’s a nice enough size, our home doesn’t have a “master” bedroom/bathroom. Our bedroom closet is so small. I’m tired of going upstairs to search for where I put the out-of-season clothes. Here in Iowa you need a tshirt and flip flops one day and wool sweater and boots the next! I know if we declutter and pare down what we have it will help. But we long for room to spread out a bit. A guest bedroom so we can actually have people stay with us. Closet space for me and my husband. Not being on top of our neighbors (and not worrying about home values on our street). But I feel like I’m not done here, either. We’ve put so much effort into this place, trying to make it fit the vision I have for it. Do I let someone else finish that vision/create their own? We want our “forever” home. The place we grow old in and have grandkids come to stay. Is this that place? I feel time slipping away from us and don’t want to “waste” any more time. We feel like we always have one more improvement/maintenance project that takes up our time so we can’t enjoy something else. Siding to be painted – again. We see friends and relatives living in homes that are bigger, nicer, roomier. We go against what we know we should and we feel a bit…jealous. They don’t spend weekends fixing a million things. They don’t spend summers painting. They have room for guests. They have room for the entire extended family. sigh…..
    I wish someone would tell us the right thing to do. Sorry I wrote a book here……

      Ah, yes, that can be a hard place to be! Not knowing for sure if you should stay where you are or move on. It’s not always clear which is best! I hope you find the right answer and have peace over it!!

    What you say is so true. It’s like the difference between having a house, and having a home. “Your home should rise up to meet you” is a favorite sentiment of mine, and one I strive for in making decisions for our home.

    Absolutely brilliant advice. I love the bible verse in Hebrews 13 that says, ‘be content with your present circumstances and with what you have’. Doesn’t mean we should aspire or hope, but we should not be discontent.

    My copy of your first book is on its way, may even arrive today! Can’t wait-we are moving into our new home in about 3 weeks. I agree with you that we need to be content in whatever home the Lord supplies for us!

    Your book arrived Thursday and I finished it yesterday (Friday). I loved it and your prospective of gratefulness & inspiration!! I do love my present home, loved it from the minute we bought it, loved its potential and the potential that has has been realized. I love everything that has to do with home and family. We are about to officially list our home for sale (retiring and moving out of state). I will miss our home here, but am looking forward to a new season of life in our new home that I am already in love with! Thank you for writing this bik, Melissa!

    I so enjoyed reading your article over at Proverbs 31. It really put things into perspective for me. As a child who moved quite often, just having lived in our current home for 23 years should be a blessing.

    Melissa I looked for 3-4 months for a house till i found my wonderful 1946 remolded home. Even after a year I find myself still looking a the cute picket fence home a couple of roads over. The dream white picket fence a little yard cottage style still captures my eyes. I have to put on my brakes remind myself you have all of that but picket fence! Look forward to getting your book and your shared ideas.
