Four Outdoor Rooms {Takeaway Tips}How to Decorate – Ballard Designs Blog

I love creating outdoor rooms almost as much (or sometimes more!) than indoor rooms. Putting together an outdoor room doesn’t have to be expensive, you can use what you have to put together a lovely space.

The same basic elements of a indoor room can be incorporated to make outdoor living comfortable and pretty:

rugs
furniture
pillows
artwork
mirrors
stools
birdhouses
lanterns
candlesticks
wreaths
plants
lighting
accessories

In fact, you might as well shop inside the house for items for your outdoor room!

Don’t worry about whether or not it is OK to bring REAL furniture or accessories outside, you CAN do this. it is LEGAL to bring regular furniture outside! You don’t have to go buy expensive patio furniture, especially if you have mild summer weather or a covered porch, or are just pulling furniture outside for a fun party, indoor furniture can be a perfect choice for summer outdoor rooms. You can always bring things in when the weather changes.

Enjoy mixing things up around the house or even shopping yard sales this summer for fun pieces you could use outside!  To recover cushions and pillows, you can use outdoor fabric, indoor outdoor rugs or even thriftier, try cute old plastic tablecloths or shower curtains.

Disclaimer: if you bring your favorite sofa outside and leave it in the rain, I am not responsible for damage. :)

What could you bring outside to enjoy in an outdoor room this summer?

We discovered that we can’t leave any textiles out in the backyard, because Chunky the Squirrel and his pals will eat them! But they are ignoring the pretty outdoor pillows on the turquoise Adirondack furniture in the front yard, so I’m not without some softness outside. Looking forward to seeing your outdoor spaces!

Ha! That’s funny. We used to have squirrels hanging out at our house but for some reason in this house we rarely have them. That’s probably a good thing since our dogs would go ballistic. Or come to think of it, maybe that’s why we don’t have squirrels! :)

Those are absolutely gorgeous outdoor rooms! I love taking my furniture and pillows outside to enjoy, it’s just the bringing back in part I don’t like:). The birds just love our outside furniture so everything needs hosed down daily to enjoy:). Hoping to add some covered outside space in the future!!!

I think a covered space would be wonderful and help keep the birds away :). I don’t like taking things in either, I love it when we have a nice long stretch of warm weather so I can leave our cushions out!

love using that inside outside, and visa versa. great tip to keeping it fresh! i have used old or cheap pillowcases before, to put over a cushion or pillow that’s outside for a new look. and when it’s faded, so what! wash it or toss it. :)

I love the look and feel of outdoor rooms but the british weather is notoriously unpredictable. I’ll have to stick with waterproof alternatives! One can dream though…

Boy have I wanted to try some of these ideas on my deck and back patio but seeing that literally 21 out of the 30 days in June have been rain and we’ve literally (our local meteorologist reported it) have only had 1 sunny day…..we haven’t even gotten out the patio/deck furniture. sigh – it’s depressing! Filing this away for next summer!

The covered patio outside my kitchen is at the top of my to-do list, but unfortunately it won’t be done in time for *this* summer. Love these ideas.

I finally sat down and ordered two of your books! They should arrive early next week, I’m looking forward to curling up in some favorite places in my home and read them. Will be fun to see where your inspirations eventually show up as changes at my house!
Thank you for putting the book reminders in your posts!
