2016 HGTV Dream Home Tour

Last week I had the fun opportunity to visit the 2016 HGTV Dream Home in Florida IN PERSON (thank you to Glidden for the invitation)! For years I’ve shared tips and inspiration from each of the prior “dream homes” so to actually get to BE IN one of the actual houses and see it for myself was pretty cool. I brought my daughter Courtney with me so I didn’t have to make the big long trip alone. We had the best time!

Even though we loved the trip and the house so much, I’ll admit I’m most excited to just be back HOME. I’ve flown across the country and back THREE times in the short three months I’ve lived here (that’s crazy for a hermit like me). As I’m sure you can imagine, I can’t help but feel happy to feel like I’m finally “home.” :-D

In fact, now that I’m actually home, I’ll share some more house updates so you can see how the bedroom and living room design progress and decisions are coming along. We are nearly done painting the bedroom and we rearranged the living room this weekend. I think both rooms are going to look great, even better than I hoped with only a few simple updates.

But for today, I wanted to take you on a little tour of the HGTV Dream Home. I’ll have more tips and inspiration to share from this house down the road, but let’s take a quick tour so you can get the overview.

This house was an existing house that was renovated, rather than a brand new build. It was not pretentious at all. Even though the setting was absolutely incredible it still felt homey and livable. I really was in awe of the long tree lined driveway in the front and the gorgeous view out the back!

The front was nearly enclosed with a picket fence, which I think really made the patio space a welcoming and usable outdoor room.

The open concept living room, dining room and kitchen were so comfortable, pretty and light-filled. I just loved the furnishings (all by Ethan Allen) and the lighting, too (all hardwired lighting is from Ethan Allen).  The color of these spaces is called Quiet Rain by Glidden, and it felt very similar to Polished Grey which I used in my old house.

Aren’t these three lights over the dining table cool?

The designer of the home was Brian Patrick Flynn. It was cool to get to meet him at the event, go on the tour with him and hear how the house came together. Glidden was one of the sponsors of the home this year so of course, color played a big part of the design. Coincidentally I found out that the white used in the house (Swan White) is the same white I used in my entryway and intend to use throughout my living room and dining room when we repaint!

This media room right off the kitchen was so cheery and full of personality. I really prefer smaller cozy spaces like this because they feel like a little nest. I loved the double doors leading into the space, too.

Right between the dining room and the garage was this adorable little hall leading to a powder room.

The eclectic mix of furnishings made this bedroom really charming and gave it that comfortable evolved-over-time feel. You could walk right out the doors to the backyard and the pool, which definitely made it feel very much like the perfect vacation room!

There was a lot of original art created for the home, I thought this Marlin string art was a fun piece.

I love love love the penny tile, don’t you? All of the faucets are by Delta.

I loved the view from the entry to one of the bedrooms on the main floor, too.

The stair railings were made out of metal, which gave them a really unique look!

Each of the three bedrooms were distinct, but each beautiful and inviting in their own way.

The master suite walls on the second floor were extra bright and cheery (Thai Teal by Glidden), but it made a really fun color statement for an island bedroom. I loved that the decor was simplified to black and white to contrast and tone down the effect of the colored walls.

My favorite thing about this room was the double doors out to a deck that overlooked the pool and the river. I would have coffee there every morning! And don’t you love that railing?

Isn’t this dog house just the cutest? It has Trex decking inside and a metal roof. Jack would love it, I’m sure.

With an outdoor pool and the river behind the house, an outdoor shower to hose off before coming back in the house made perfect sense.

I really liked the exterior details such as shutters, the roof and the overall charm of the house with the balconies.

This house is soon going to belong to a lucky winner, so I hope you are entering! I’m a little jealous of whoever wins because it truly would be a dream to live in permanently or even to just visit as a vacation home. If you win, please invite me over :).

I’ll have more from this house down the road! I definitely came home inspired and more ready than ever to love the home I have :).

The HGTV Dream Home trip was sponsored by Glidden, but the photos and opinions are my own.

I’m loving those windows downstairs … and that fun little soaking tub!

What a fun trip for you and your daughter! I would love that! This year’s dream home is definitely different from any that they’ve done – I love that they renovated instead of building brand new too. Gorgeous setting, I like the pops of color and homey touches they’ve used. Thanks for sharing!

This year’s house is so different from the ones that they have created in the past. It’s not my favorite one but I do like that bedroom!

Where was Linda Woodrum, the designer of many past houses? I missed her!

I’m now looking forward to seeing HGTV’s before photos. The house looks stunning. I’m not sure about all the bedroom paint colors but no doubt they look better in person. I was wondering about the pool, I couldn’t see a fence around the pool area. Is the whole yard fenced instead?

The dog house is adorable! The pictures of dogs are very nice. I notice there are vintage platters or trays above the bed. Are they silver-plated or silver ? I had been unpacking several boxes that were passed down to me. I found the silver-plated platter or tray and several ironstone pieces.

I believe that the blue penny round tiles were my favorite feature of the home. I see that painting one’s walls + ceiling all with one color is still a “thing”. I used color on our ceilings, too, but it was different from the walls.

Thanks for sharing this gorgeous house! I’m so happy to see a coastal house with lots of color instead of lots of white. I do love white decor but this house is so refreshing. I love the white penny tile on the bathroom wall!

Many beautiful aspects to this home. However, the Terra Cotta bedroom doesn’t seem to fit in. I also don’t care for the black hardware on the doors. Love the view and dog house!

I agree that the Terra Cotta with black hardware is not appropriate for this house. I wish designers would remember that Dream Houses go on the market 9 out of 10 times and stop putting in things that require work to change, ie, mural in the living room, paint on the walls AND ceiling. They need to “stage” the houses to sell, not fix them for “Southern Living” magazine articles.

Love your comments on the master bedroom color scheme. Brings things to me that I would otherwise not notice. The designer might consider asking YOU to also do a 90 second tour . . .

Thanks for the tour! This house is so different than the past dream homes. It’s a very nice house, but I don’t see anything I really love about it. Hmm… Oh, well. :)

This home is lovely and the designer did a great job…..but what happened to Linda and Jack????? Are they just gone all of a sudden????

Do you, by chance, have the color used in that cute hallway? Lots to like about this home!

Gorgeous house! I love the coastal vibe but it doesn’t seem at all too theme-y. My favorite part is the backyard. All of those little nest seating areas would be perfect for entertaining. A great get-together house, for sure! Thanks so much for taking us on the tour. I’m so glad that you got to go!

    • In person! Wow! How fun!
    • And tall ceilings, I mean, just heaven.
    • Lastly, side note – in my next life I want to work as a paint colors name’r.

I’m glad you got to experience the house in person – so fun! I am surprised they changed from Sherwin to Glidden . I grew up in Florida and my least favorite thing in houses was the pastel watery colors which this house has a lot of all around .

I think my favorite part of this is the living room with those gorgeous light fixtures, the balcony, and the back yard. I thought that dog house with the Trex flooring and metal roof was just adorable, it’s even got a little fenced porch entrance. I would totally lounge on that balcony all day long!

Sorry to say not liking this house. It doesn’t seem to have a nice flow from room to room. Found the before pictures, I think they could have done a much better job. A little ordinary for a “dream house”.

Where are Linda and Jack, the talented duo who really “made” the homes of the past great. Their input and design was always awesome. And why a “fixer upper”? Not impressed at all and won’t waste my time entering in drawing.

I am kind of surprised that so many comments don’t like the house. One of the first things that came to my mind was…it looks like its been there for ages …and then you write it was an existing house! I applaud HGTV for renovating this time. It is much more likely that those who do like the house in whole or parts will be inspired as you were to take the steps to make their home match their vision.

I’m not a fan of the fuzzy cubes, I’ll have to say. They remind me of the shag rug era and I can only imagine them not fairing well in the short run.

But I really like the casual vibe. The backsplash in the kitchen is something I have on the floor of my ‘jack and jill’ bath and I really love that tile.

Best of all is the outdoors…the view, the pool, the gardens and the kitchen. In a place like that, you probably spend more of your home time out there!

    Thanks so much for sharing!

I always look forward to seeing what Linda Woodrum has come up with each year because I love her taste- where has she gone? This house looks beautiful, but with a very different more elaborate style. Great that they took an existing house and brought it back!
