Designers refer to the ceiling as the fifth wall. Look up in the room you are in right now, you’ll see the ceiling contributes to a significant portion of the visual surfaces! But beyond the safe choice of white or even a more daring color statement with paint, the ceiling also presents an interesting architectural opportunity in many rooms. I LOVE opportunities for architecture, don’t you?

I think if you are going to install a prominent architectural treatment that will be forever be looming over your head, you’ll want to carefully consider the impact it will have on the overall design of the room. The ceiling height, the style of the home, the visual weight of the treatment in the room, the width, stain or paint color of the beams or boards and how the architectural feature will complement the floors, windows, walls and other elements in the space are definitely important considerations.

Today I am featuring some interesting examples of ceilings featuring wood planks or beams. Check out these lovely rooms!

Thank you for the great inspiration! I do like ceiling beams!

I love planked wood ceilings! I am hoping to do something along those lines in our family room/kitchen when we get to remodeling our kitchen and taking down the dropped ceiling from the ’80’s!

We have wood ceilings but no ceiling beams. I have been thinking about adding ceiling beams. Need to show the photos to my hubby. I really want to brighten up the living room . We ask ourselves that question – Should the fireplace and raw wood ceiling be painted in white?

Thank you for the expose of ceilings! We live in a 60-year old farmhouse with rough ceilings and this has opened a whole new avenue of treatment!

Oh man, I love planks and beams on a ceiling!!!
Thanks for the inspiration – I hope to do a treatment like this in our home someday!!!

Our builder paneled the vaulted ceiling of our family room with pine flooring and then we had it whitewashed. What I learned is that adding white, in spite of the name, is not the way to go. Instead, water down a light color – in our case our walls are grey so we did a very light gray. Looks great! Everyone thinks it feels cozy in spite of the size because of those white washed pine ceiling.

I’m eagerly following your progress, Melissa! So much fun to travel along with you…

Oh, what a great tip! Thank you for sharing that. Your room sounds wonderful! I would love to see it (maybe you could share it on Home Love Stories sometime?)

I just saw a photo of a kitchen the other day on Pinterest where the ceiling absolutely blew me away with the beauty of it! It was a cathedral ceiling with planking and beams and I knew that when I do my kitchen over (someday in the future…) that HAS to happen! Gorgeous inspiration pix!

We have the 13th ceiling down on the row of figures in our city home- planked- it is considered a bit of beach home due to that- they are white in the main rooms and then a bleached stain in the upper third floor bedrooms: bluish, grayish, and a warm taupe. It is one of the reasons we bought that house since we are very close to Seahurst Park and the beach there too (guess we love beaches) The country island home has plaster ceilings that are elevated throughout, especially the Master Bedroom and we are debating whether to put false beams in them like the 11th in a warm sandy stained wood or just love them with their plain face. But anything is better than asbestos filled sparkly popcorn ceilings that one of my hubby’s associates had to have removed by the tenting. We both grew up with plaster ceilings and I had a open concept dining/living room with a super large beam since the house was super modern. So we sure look up a lot!!! It is the fifth wall. I wish I could get the gumption to paint one of the walls out at the island a solid color- now that would be great too! So I hope you get to add something in your great room.

I love reclaimed wood beams and shiplap on the ceiling.
Last year I had the opportunity to design a kitchen that had reclaimed railroad ties for beams and shiplap for the ceiling.
It is a great way to warm up the space!!

We have a honey-coloured coffered wood ceiling for the open living room, kitchen area are of our little chalet that I have always loved and never tired of. I’ve always thought it added such great visual impact and actually made the space appear bigger. The trick used was to place the pattern on the bias, something like photo #5 from Style at Home. The coffered ceiling is somewhat similar to the photo of the kitchen by Jan Gleysteen Architects in your Jan 14 post, except not as deep and the squares are not as large. It’s a ceiling that adds real character to a room.

Hi! We just installed counter height windows only to be told by the electrician we don’t have the space to meet code requirements for required outlets. The issue is the windows are in amd cabinets are ordered… so no changes can be made. How did you get around code requirements? Any issues with that? Thanks, Melissa!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Hi Elisha! I remember there being a bit of a discussion over that issue. They suggested an outlet on the counter which was a big no from me, there just wasn’t a good hidden spot for it in the corner where it was needed or I would have done that. I think we had an outlet installed in the corner cabinet instead so they let it go! It wasn’t technically where it was supposed to be but they might have let it go because the windows were existing.Good luck, friend! I can’t wait to see your remodel!
