Progress in the Sideyard

And so it begins! I’m pretty excited that this side yard project is finally getting started. Just before the work began, we discovered something we hadn’t really thought about before…this side yard has a view! I don’t know why we hadn’t noticed it before, perhaps it was because we were always looking at the ground trying not to trip and die on our way to the backyard. Ha! It was a happy discovery and definitely inspired us with how much we are going to enjoy using this space as a destination and not just a pass through to the backyard.

Progress in the Sideyard

I am already dreaming up a couple of special design details for this space, including this charming new light we ordered from Rejuvenation (Carson Wall Sconce) for the back porch, right next to our eventual Dutch door. I’ll be sharing more of our design vision for the exterior as this project continues to move along!

Usually with a big messy project like this it “will get worse before it gets better,” but so far we’ve felt the opposite. We were really happy to see that with the old concrete removed, it actually feels better already! :)

Hi Melissa! I am new to your blog. Actually I have enjoyed it for a while but finally am able to Email you. I certainly see your desire and may I say your need to revamp your side yard. And I laughed when I read about your dogs going out and trying to create a boundary. I’ve got a dog so you’re barking to the choir! The inspirational photos are lovely with the paths. Particularly the randomly shaped slabs with the grass in the spaces. And the practicality of hiding the garbage cans. Great idea! The screens look really nice with ivy growing. Dutch doors are homey and welcoming. I still remember one from my childhood. I look forward to seeing your progress. Thank you for sharing!

Oh, how exciting thst you’ve already started your dream side yard project! I love your vision. I think many wouldn’t even consider it usable space, but you’ve got some great plans! Love it! I think I spotted your newly discovered water view in your side yard. How wonderful! It’s going to be a lovely, usable relaxing spot to be in. It’s going to be very welcoming, I’m sure. You know what they, say…back doors friends are best! ?❤️

Looks great…..not! I am so jealous because I am so anxious to fix up our yard. Instead, we are getting new garage doors. All in good time, my pretty!

Enjoy the garage doors. Yes, all in good time. I would love new garage doors :), but I am pretty tickled to be starting on SOMETHING! And in the spring I’m going to be thrilled to have this space ready to enjoy.

I do not envy the mess, but it will be so wonderful, I’m sure. Envy your weather.
This is our 3rd week of freezing temps – ho hum.

I forget that the rest of the world is not all covered in ice and snow. lol! Bare ground seems like a life-time ago but spring will come again to the Midwest (in another three months). Love your inspiration pictures and that light is so cute. I have a good-sized backyard with next to nothing for privacy so cozy cottage gardens are what I dream about. A cozy yard evolves over time right??? :)
