The Life-Changing Impact of Daily Routines

About fifteen years ago, I stumbled upon a life-changing habit that transformed my home and life for the better. It was really quite a simple discovery, as often the most sustainable ideas are.

The Life-Changing Impact of Daily Routines

I really tried hard to follow all the complicated systems for keeping up with a house and I failed at every single one. When you feel like a failure as a homemaker, it’s easy to give up, to even go the opposite direction and proclaim that you just don’t even care what your house looks like. You’ve got more important things to worry about than chasing dust business and doing dishes! I get it. I agree, we DO have more important things to do. And that is precisely why I came to the conclusion that I needed to make a change in my approach.

I desperately needed to get control of my home because I wanted to more fully enjoy and be able to focus on more important things. I needed to bring more order to the chaos, so I could be the kind of person I wanted to be.

The Life-Changing Impact of Daily Routines

I still laugh sometimes (to myself) about how challenging I found housekeeping to be before I realized this life-changing truth: the best way to have a pretty, put-together and clean (enough) house is to practice simple, daily habits.

The trouble with daily clutter is it doesn’t go away with the one big decluttering frenzy never to return again. In my new book I share my simple secrets to daily habits and practical tips for decluttering and organizing. Make Room For What You Love is available now! I want to help you create a home you’ll love to live in!

You can find Make Room For What You Love here!

My daily routines changed everything about my perspective and practicing them continues to empower me to this day to live the life I really want to live.

I wrote more about creating daily routines, the story of my own home-creating journey and how daily habits impact our home in my book Love The Home You Have, which is a New York Times Bestseller (still can’t wrap my mind around that but thank you to everyone who supported it!). If you would like a gentle nudge, encouragement and practical tips to get your home, daily routines and perspective in order, you can find the book here

I’m all about daily routines – they are absolutely imperative to keep my house running smoothly! This morning before leaving for work I folded and put away a load of laundry, put another in the washer, and another in the dryer. The dishwasher was humming away, and tonight’s dinner is in the crockpot. All those little extra things I do in the morning make my return home from work a little more relaxing. Heading over to read your article – thanks for this reminder!

Seriously this is one of the hardest things for me at my house. Keeping my house neat and some what organized is crazy hard in a house with two small kids. I work 4 days a week and if not for my Mom who lives with me (she does the dishes, and laundry and takes out the dog) we would be naked. I feel like the kids are making a mess as i’m cleaning. I’m like a mouse on a wheel never getting anywhere. .LOL. . I’m going to read more about your organizing tricks.

Daily routines that are simple to maintain for all who dwell in my house keeps me sane and focused on my interior design business.
If I didn’t have daily routines or rituals, my life would be in chaos.
I learned long ago “always expect unannounced guests” kept my home in perfect condition.
I was embarrassed only twice with a messy home.
    Lesson learned.

I make the bed every morning, and do the dishes after every meal. I also have a place for everything, and make sure it is back in it’s place before bed. We are presently living in the midst of a major remodel, and the house is in chaos. All of the furniture is piled up in the garage and a couple of bedrooms, and our only sanctuary is the Master Bedroom. Even that is filled with furniture from other rooms, and we have a narrow trail to the bed. Nonetheless, I make the bed every day. I have chuckled to myself over this, because making the bed will not make the bedroom look good, with furniture stacked everywhere. Likewise, I am keeping the dishes washed, even though the counter top looks much like a work bench. I continue to do these things, because living in a construction zone would be even worse if I didn’t.

I remember that exact stage, Ann! I totally agree it seems silly to do it but you’re right, it would be even worse if we didn’t. :)

As much as I enjoy your blog, I know how and where to purchase your book.
I resent getting an outright advertisement in my email in the form of a daily blog.
Sorry! There is a fine line between the two and you crossed it with this daily blog.

While many of my regular blog readers are aware that I’ve written books, 60% of my readers everyday are brand new to the blog and may not even realize this is a topic I’ve covered in my book. I do want to make sure all my readers can easily find the topics they are interested in so occasionally I do refer to past posts, books I’ve written or other places I’ve addressed related subjects. Thank you for being a loyal reader and putting up with the occasional references to additional material I’ve written :)

Thanks for letting me know about your book! I’m one that didn’t know…

Great thoughts, Melissa! I’ve been starting out the day for a long time making the beds and emptying the dishwasher after having time by myself in the morning and you’re totally right… it sets you up on the right track for the day.
    Have a great Monday! :)

Establishing daily routines are so important for a smooth day. I’m a person who must make the bed first thing in the morning. I appreciate the suggestion of keeping tasks/routines simple vs complex. Anything that can be accomplished in the morning to help ease our busy evenings is time well spent in my opinion. One routine I’ve implemented is creating a weekly menu and having my kids suggest a meal they would each like (I have veto rights). This ensures everything is here and random grocery runs are kept to a minimum. Thank you for sharing your book. I’m new and can’t wait to check it out.
