Master Bedroom Sneak Peek! {Black Frosted Plum Walls}

Remember way back months ago when I mentioned we were painting our bedroom? Well, we did. And finally I took a few pics so I could show you the color! Painting a dark color with white trim color is a painstakingly slow process, so it took a bit longer than I expected for my extremely perfectionistic painter, i.e. my husband, to finish, but I think the result was worth the wait! We absolutely love it.

Our bedroom still has some finishing touches to install, such as blinds (*check out the bottom of this post for a discount code on window coverings, by the way!), but it is nearly done so I thought today I could at least talk about our paint color.

This room is small (no grand master suite in this house!) but it has become my favorite master bedroom we’ve ever had. Rather than going with the light vibe of our other rooms in the house we decided to really play up the cozy factor in here with a rather unexpected color for the walls (see our before photos and vision and inspiration for dark bedroom walls in this post).

The paint color we chose is Black Frosted Plum by Glidden. It’s like a mix of charcoal and a really pretty but unexpected plum hue that I find just so intriguing. The walls help set a wonderful romantic and moody ambience both day and night, yet it isn’t so dark and brooding that the room is not inviting. We also have the benefit of plenty of morning sun coming in the windows, so the room is very cheery in the mornings! The color varies throughout the day and is really dark charcoal at night, but it’s always pleasant. The existing white crown molding, ceilings and trim added a nice contrast, too.

Plum is a tricky color that I feared could go so wrong if we didn’t find just the right mix of materials to set the mood we wanted. We brought in feminine touches like a mirrored glass nightstand and a sparkly crystal and gold chandelier, but it all mellowed out with a cozy fur throw and our more masculine traditional dark wood sleigh bed. It really is a “his and hers” room!

The duvet is a soft pale gray and white background with charcoal toile details and gold stitching. The reverse is white with sketched feathers. The pattern is a fun quirky twist on a classic romantic toile. It is so pretty, but the description of the bedding on Anthropologie is what sealed the deal for me.

“This delightful bedding features top-hat-clad foxes keeping watch in the foreground of a toile thicket.”

How could I not fall head over heels in love with that? I absolutely love the unexpected whimsy it brings to the otherwise more serious room. Since the Anthro bedding and the dark gray Pottery Barn velvet quilt were more of a splurge, the other soft neutral shams and linen drapes from HomeGoods were a more affordable compromise. I’m pretty excited to try mixing in other color options on the bed for summer, too.

While I admit I would never have imagined myself choosing plum walls (or plum anything, to be honest!), I can now say I have never been so in love with a bedroom. The touches of white and charcoal in this room tie in well with the rest of the house and the hallway walls and slate floors that are just outside the bedroom, too.

I love to curl up in this room every night, it is truly our retreat and we both love it!

I’ll share more angles and ideas from this room in a future post!

Have a great day!

I really like what you’ve done with your bedroom! I think a dark colour makes a room very good for sleeping.

  2. Wendy

Wow, what a beautiful room. I love everything the colour of the walls, light, bedlinen, pillows.. yes everything. I could happily curl up on your bed and relax. Absolutely fabulous. Loving your new home and everything you do.

  3. Lauri Morrill

I am thir thrilled that you chose a lovely COLOR as you previously had more white than anything. This is a surprise like your livingroom or den blue run and accents. Happy your view and entering light is adding so much more to your lovely home. Praying for your progress on your yard that the blockages would be removed and you’d get to get on with it! Bless you as you so opening share with us. …Lauri

I’m dying here! After two years (yes, years) of agonizing over exactly what dark color to go with in my master bedroom, I made the decision YESTERDAY to go with white, and woke up this morning ready to go. Then while eating breakfast, I open up The Inspired Room and I don’t know whether to laugh or cry when I see these pictures of your amazing room because now I have more thinking to do. aarrghh

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Ha! :) Sorry to throw you a curve ball when you were finally settled. A cozy bedroom is wonderful, though! No regrets! <3

  8. Nikki

    So so pretty!

  9. Donna @ Modern on Monticello

I probably would never go for plum color anything either, but you have picked a beautiful color and blended it so well with the other colors in the room. It looks wonderful and relaxing.

  10. Christie

The walls, the bedding, the lighting … so pretty! I especially liked how you described how it ties in with the white trim and slate floors just outside the door. And it is so refreshing to see a bedroom of normal square footage. ?

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thanks! Yeah, it’s definitely a humble room but it’s turned out to be the coziest!

  11. victoria taylor

Hello – this looks georgous! I love the dark plum…very daring color and elegant!… I just painted my bedroom too..but I used a gray…….I prefer bedding like you….not matchy matchy comforter sets…you chose some nice texture and style….simple and elegant!

  12. Barbara (WA)

What a beautiful color and room! I have recently spotted shades of plum on TV design shows and have been intrigued to see a new color trend. Yours is especially well done!

  13. Deanna Rabe

Its a lovely room! Great decision to play up the coziness factor! Your bedding and accessories all work together to make a delightful space!

  14. Dawn F

GORGEOUS! Now I want to paint my bedroom!!!

  15. Maggie

    Its so pretty!!

  16. Debbie Ward

Oh my goodness Melissa, what a lovely, beautiful, inviting and romantic bedroom you have created. Love the color of the walls, the bedding and the accessories. Thank you for sharing and cant’ wait to see more once you are ready to share!

  17. Felicia Adams

I love the bedroom. I like the bold color choice and particularly like the brass/gold accents that work to pull the room together.

  18. Karen on Bainbridge Island

Purple is my second least favorite color…however…this is a truly lovely shade and perfect for a bedroom. You were going for cozy sophistication and you nailed it! Isn’t it just a joy to walk into your bedroom at night to go to sleep and you can just take it all in and just love what you see?

I just this second finished putting the finishing touches on a dark wood linen upholstered bench. Had it for years. The dark tone of wood didn’t go with our new lighter and brighter bedroom. Love how it turned out. Now, if the remodeling of the master bathroom would get done, I could actually put it in the room and sleep in there!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

I would have said the same thing about my least favorite color and probably still would if I hadn’t experienced this one. It just envelopes the room in an almost magical cozy way, a perfectly relaxing and inviting bedroom color. I am no longer a doubter Hahahaha! Have fun with your projects! I’ve got quite a few going on today, too!

  19. Lisa E

Love it. I have been wanting to go dark in my bedroom as well. My indecisive self just can’t decide on a color. Plus now we have these extremely heavy, beautiful, Amish made Maple dressers. Even putting them on those discs to move furniture is a chore.

  20. Tracey

Everything is so gorgeous! Could you please share where you got the pictures on the wall that are in the gold frames?

Thank you for sharing your cozy master bedroom!

  21. Dawn

    Love, love, love it!!!!

  22. Laura @ The No Pressure Life

Wow, it’s really lovely! All of the textures are great. I would have expected plum to look quite feminine, but you found a balance that really works. All in all it seems very cozy! You must have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning. ;-)

  23. Dee

Nicely done! Not every room has to be large to be grand and this proves it. Would you share your experience washing the PB velvet quilt? I’m on the fence about purchasing one. Also would you describe it as medium weight or light weight?

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thanks! I would say it’s medium, very cozy and plush! It washed beautifully! We love it.

  24. Amy Contreras

It’s absolutely beautiful. I love the depth of the color and the fact that it’s masculine too. It truly must be a joy to retreat each evening. Congratulations on another job well done!

  25. Joanne B.

Wow wow wow wow wow. You may think you are behind on the side patio project but this? THIS makes up for what might not be happening outside right now! This room is absolutely beautiful and you have, as they say, “hit it out of the ball park!” This is stunning to say the least and so perfectly cozy and romantic and unexpected! What a leap of faith to go so dark and plum? When you feel that the side patio job is getting to you just go lock yourself up in this beauty of a room! Well done!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thank you Joanne! This room is my sanity when nothing else is finished! :) Thank you for your kind words!

  26. Crystal

Lovely! You’ve mentioned enjoying sheets so much that you keep just a single fabulous set — would you mind sharing your favorite?? Ours have seen better days, but we think it’s a daily treat worth a splurge :)

  27. Anne B

I like the color and LOVE the chandelier!! Plum isn’t a color I would have ever thought of either but it looks spectacular! Very cozy indeed:-)

  28. Carol Karl

I absolutely love this colour. Good on you for taking a chance with something so dark. It looks perfect.

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thank you! It was a risk but SO HAPPY that it is both cozy and pretty at the same time.

  29. Jane

Absolutely fab, and even more so b/c i have this rich purple on my bedroom walls too. So i’m devouring your room, for even more ideas!!!!

    Love it
    Jane

  30. Shelagh

    Hi Melissa!
Your bedroom is just beautiful and the color you chose is perfect; it fits right in with the other cooler color families you like :). It’s so nice to have a relaxing, cozy spot to retreat to at the end of the day (or anytime;)….Enjoy!
I was curious were your bench was from? I’ve been looking for a smaller bench for the bathroom but most are way too long!
    Blessings :)

  31. Linda Grubbs

So beautiful! Love your color choice and lovely bedding.

  32. Kari

I always had lavender walls as a kid growing up. These plum walls look like a great grownup version of a purple room!

  33. Sandy

I do love that color! It really worked in that room. The bedding is perfect with it also. I once bought a dress from Coldwater Creek because of the description, so I love that you shared the description of the bedding. It was definitely worth the splurge. Beautiful!

  34. Debbie

Oh my. This is GOR-GEOUS! Maybe one of my favorite ever bedrooms. I cannot wait to see what you do in the rest of your lovely home. So much inspiration! Thank you for sharing the process with us.

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thank you, Debbie! It is fun to have a new house! I enjoy sharing it and will have progress in more rooms to show you VERY SOON! :) xo

  35. Joanne Taggart

Oh my goodness! LOVE the room color and the added touches. The mirrored bedside table is beautiful and seems to bounce light and openness. I can understand why it is a favorite room of both you and your husband, who by the way did a terrific paint job! Thanks so much for sharing your decorating progress. It’s such fun!

  36. sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com

Insanely beautiful! I absolutely love a ‘color varies throughout the day.’ And while I aloft never go dark, because can bring out the claustrophobic in me – this is just so healthy, pretty, adult, happy, rich, and classy.
And paleeze?! Even with the book trim and pages??! Do awesome …

  37. Julie Blanner

Beautiful color choice. It looks quiet and peaceful!

  38. Carolyn

Wow, I never in a million years would have thought of that…and I love it! But I can’t find the foxes!

  39. Robbyn

Don’t know if you responded to this question yet or not, but did you use a semi-gloss, eggshell or flat? The color is amazing and just right for a female/male balanced room

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Thank you Robbyn! We went with flat for the bedroom paint finish. We often use flat paint when it’s a dark color so that it has less glare, but we usually choose eggshell since it’s easier to keep clean :)

  40. mary louise

hi, like everyone else has commented, i love the plum color! the link to your toile bedding doesnt really show the bedding you selected, instead it goes to PB. or am i missing something?

  41. Adrienne

Hi Melissa, my eye is caught by that cute little ottoman under your pictures. Do you have a source for that? I found a gorgeous leather wingback chair at a local thrift store i’m trying to convince my husband to let me replace his ratty recliner with and he says only with an ottoman. That one looks like a perfect pop of whimsy!

    Thanks!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

That little bench is from Target! It’s not available any more as far as I know but they often have very similar items! :) I hope you find something that will work for you and make your husband happy with that option, too! :)

  42. Lea

I’m dying for your bedroom. I wish it were mine. After searching forever I finally found a picture and color of what describes the exact mood/decor I’ve been looking for. I just went to buy a sample today of this color after seeing your post. I’m hoping it works out as well in my own bedroom with the pieces I already have.

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Yay! I’m so glad you found this room to inspire you. We really love the mood, too. I hope it will work as well in your home! xoxo

  43. Bethany

Do you remember an exact source for that chandelier? It is beautiful!!

  44. Corinna - ADesignerAtHome

To be completely honest, I would never have thought this was your space. The plum is so unexpected, especially after following along for the past 5 years. The space is gorgeous and I really do love the wall color. Its a happy surprise Seri g how you work outside your usual coastal colors. I enjoy it.

  45. Tricia

Love the room, just what I imagine my future bedroom to look like! Since I can’t quite tell the exact color of the linen drapes on my computer, could you please tell me if they are a grey or flax/natural color?
    Thank you.
