How To Set Daily Routines That Will Transform Your Life

As someone who has admittedly always struggled with procrastination and staying focused on tasks, zeroing in on and practicing my “must do” daily routines was a literal life-changer for me. I desperately needed to figure out daily routines not only to help me keep up with my house, but to help me with my sense of joy at home. Daily routines offer me a way to focus on what needs to be done at home so I can accomplish what matters to me. They also give me more time to reach my personal goals, too.

About seven years ago I shared my basic daily routines on The Inspired Room. Through opening up about my own struggles over the years, I realized I wasn’t alone in needing a simplified approach to home management. Since then I’ve continued to learn so many new things about productivity and being intentional with how I spend my days. I enjoy offering what has worked for me and love when I hear how these simple things have changed other people’s lives, too.

I wasn’t the “born-organized” type, so even if I read all the organizing books in the world or had a list of what to do, the only way I was able to actually become a more organized disciplined person was through beginning to recognize my habits, struggles and limitations and finding super practical ways to work around and overcome those challenges.

In recent years I stumbled upon another life-changing realization: I discovered the key reason I used to be so disorganized. Decluttering and organization was an ongoing issue for me most of my life because I was indecisive and lacked focus in so many areas of my life!

Once I learned how I could in fact train myself to be more inspired, decisive and focused in the areas that mattered to me, I was able to accomplish so much more with much less stress and effort. I still struggle with a tendency toward clutter and disorganization at times, but now I have very specific and practical ways to bring myself back to focus every time and keep myself motivated to succeed.

The simple habits and mindsets I learned have impacted my house, my style, my business and my family in so many positive and healthy ways. I love to share what has actually worked and been successful for me. It makes me so happy when what I learned offers hope to others who, like me, really want to simplify their life and home.

Here are five tips for success in setting daily routines that will transform your life:

  1. Be decisive.
What are your goals for your home or life? If they are undefined or unattainable, you will not be effective in reaching them. Plain and simple, to have a beautiful, uncluttered and organized home you have to be more decisive both in what you want to allow in your home and focused on the daily steps that will be required to get where you want to go.
  2. Commit to being disciplined.
Whether you are heading out the door early for work, wrangling kids to school or working at home, what you do from the moment you open your eyes and in the moments or hours that follow determines and sets the course of your day. Discipline yourself to start out every day with a realistic sense of purpose and intention and follow through with attainable goals. Your life and home will not change unless you commit to being disciplined.
  3. Focus on your dailies.
You don’t have to do everything (in fact, to succeed you shouldn’t do everything) but you have to be very focused on your housekeeping essentials and stick with those every day. Anything extra is a bonus. My dailies are making my bed, cleaning my sink, doing a load of laundry and doing a quick cleaning frenzy or two in the day.
  4. Practice productivity.
Habits aren’t learned in a day, they are acquired through practice over time. If you want to become organized and reach your home or life goals, you’ll need to practice productivity. Don’t give up or get too discouraged by setbacks, practice will make daily routines and chores so much more effortless and rewarding in time.
  5. Eliminate distractions.
What distracts you from keeping up with your home goals or doing what you love? What non-essentials and low priority tasks are crowding your day, life, or your home and keeping you running around frazzled? If you stick to your daily routines you will be able to better manage a busy and full schedule so you can live life to the fullest! Eliminate the clutter and excess around your home and in your schedule, so you can effectively transform how you live. How To Set Daily Routines That Will Transform Your Life

If you find it challenging to stay focused on tasks or to keep up with housekeeping or to eliminate the clutter in your home, you’ll find lots of valuable insights and very practical tips and encouragement in the new book I wrote called Make Room for What You LoveIt’s different than my other books, so whether you’ve read the others yet or not, I hope you’ll find this one uniquely inspiring and motivating!

So many people who have already read the book have mentioned that they are so inspired and motivated as they read that they find themselves getting up repeatedly to go make progress on their home! That’s the best compliment I could receive! I didn’t just want to offer a list of ways you could transform your home, but my goal was that you’d be inspired to actually go take action and see the results for yourself.

A nice reminder! I too was not born organized and it was a terrible strain on our marriage in the early days because my husband is the exact opposite of me. He still asks my permission when he runs out of time to put something away…is it ok if I leave this…? I always laugh and say really? Look around at all of my unfinished moments :). Over the years lots of progress made and we have meshed our lives to accept each other’s weaknesses and strengths! But it is a struggle daily for me to stay on top of it.

I LOVE your new book, Melissa! Like you, my issue is having difficulty with decisions (whether making them in a timely manner or making them at all). Your book nailed this concept and opened my eyes. You have already changed my habits with the “order/disorder” question and the whole domino concept – I LOVE it! Thank you so much for writing this book! I’m savoring it slowly, like a good cup of tea! God bless you!

Thank you so much, Sallie! I am so glad it is resonating with you and others who struggle with these same issues. It’s nice to know that we are not alone and that there are solutions! We will OVERCOME! Ha :).

I, too, love your new book, Melissa! I have even been applying my difficulty with decisions to other areas of my life…like with relationships, activities, etc. I have found a lot of clutter all over! I am deeply thinking about how clutter (in all areas) is a form of self-punishment because I choose not to deal with it and let it remain there and cause me so much pain, which I guess I can feel I deserve. As a Christ-follower, this is not good! Your book has been giving me a lot to think about and I’ve found it very healing! I’ve been on a simplifying my house journey for about a year already, and I find it’s just spilling over into other areas of life! Thank you !

Great article! I do need help in getting – more importantly, staying – organized. I always have great plans for getting organized, then I relax and everything stops. Sometimes it’s even just one day – if I don’t pick up the “hot spot” one day, then the next it’s worse and before you know it I’m overwhelmed. Thank you for these SIMPLE sheets. I hope to use them well.

I really like the way that you have broken this down! Decluttering both your life and your space can be a long and tedious process, but guides like this really help. This is an awesome resource! Thank you so much for sharing your advice and what has worked for you!

    I really needed this.
I get really distracted or I do too much at once and then when the biggest thing that I wanted to get done isn’t I feel like a failure!
Thank you for the print outs, they are promptly going on my fridge!

My home use to be immaculate at the time it was fairly small .Just big enough for 3 people everything had a place my husband …myself …my paraplegic father whom had a tragic accident when I was 10 yrs of age i took total care of him …then came our newly borned bueatyful little girl our home was 2 bedroom 1 bath . I always had a houseful of friends and family for Saturday and most of time Sunday dinners i had no problem at all keeping my home organised and then i found myself with 4 extra children that had been abused your thinking WOW well then WOW never crossed my mind i was always one to figure it out no matter the task i faced so i set up bunkbeds on other side of bedroom with my Dad added a matching dresser cleaned closet out added shelves no problem….my husband and I knew we were going to have to build on another room for the 2 girls oh and here I have my little one getting to big to sleep in her baby bed I still didn’t see a big deal for a short time the 2 girls slept on our sectional couch for their clothes and ect . My utility room was big enough we added cabinets and shelving for the girls everything still organised and double the work everything still had a place and everyone was happy my husband and I had a very large bedroom so one weekend we removed some things he measured out the bedroom and with our planning to build on to house it just wasn’t in budget right then and wgen i say bedroom was large it turnrd out our extra bedroom was right there he went and got the lumber and materials needed and went to work it seemed it didn’t take him no time it was simple all he had to do was put up a wall insulated wired some plug ins built a closet we as well as with the boys put in bunk beds for the girls a couple dressers and their was plenty of room for a daybed for our little girl …it took me a little time to get use to my bedroom being downsized i was so used to this huge room but the things I got rid of i didnt need was just pieces of furniture to fill the space . But mow everyone had their space and happy their still was a place for everything and the house was still immaculate my days were full from early morn till past midnite keeping my dad’s needs met as well as my daughter’s which by this time was over a yr old and walking but everyone had chores and we had a Happy family this artical i read made me wonder over the years how I went from such small spaces and everything stayed so neat and tidy to now having 4 bedroom 2 baths and my house is a wreck ive lost the desire i use to have but as ive read the artical I realised its mot the house out of control its me ive got to get that desire back …
