Kitchen Remodel Update: Design Board

Hello, there! Today there is a pretty exciting development happening our kitchen. I can hardly believe it, but the cabinets are being delivered and installed! No photos yet of the progress since the work hadn’t started when I published this post, but you can imagine I’m doing a HAPPY DANCE AND SPORTING A HUGE GRIN ON MY FACE!

If you happen catch a glimpse of the kitchen on Instagram stories or see it later this week on the blog, you’ll notice it currently has dark blue walls and a natural wood ceiling. The blue is just a primer and while the tongue and groove natural wood ceiling is pretty, it will actually be painted white. And man, let me tell ya, those two elements have been throwing off the whole vibe I’m going for! I can’t wait for the day it all gets painted. They have projected a completed space by December 21 (!) so you can bet I’m counting the minutes.

Even though our kitchen is obviously a small one, a lot of thought went into each and every detail we wanted to work with. I think with a small galley kitchen you need to think through elements more carefully. We had to consider how each piece would work together even more than I might have otherwise, because everything we bring into that room is going to shout at us visually in just a few square feet of space.

While our kitchen will have a fresh and clean feel, we didn’t play it safe or boring. It will definitely have its own personality. We chose to avoid dramatic or boldly patterned design statements as they would potentially overpower or close in our entire small kitchen, and instead we strived to ramp up the interest in other ways.

Our starting point for the design was to create a subtle backdrop while using interesting contrasts, shapes and textures. The newly updated architectural elements like the archways, the round window, the lights and other choices bring personality to the shell of the room. That personality means we can keep the rest of this space simple and clean and edited. Or if we are feeling like something new, we can play as much as we want with color and patterns through seasonally changeable items like plants, rugs, dishes, cutting boards, and dish towels.

Kitchen Remodel Update: Design Board

I do love to change the look of a room, so I know I’m going to really enjoy the flexibility of this space for years to come. You can see some of the elements together in the design board today. We couldn’t capture every special detail of the room on the board, but rest assured, more will be revealed and any questions will be answered in due time!

I’ll also show you the layout and happily offer more detail down the road about why each element was chosen. There are some sources linked below in case you are curious, but I will do a more detailed/complete source list once the kitchen is finished. I haven’t had new appliances in years (we kept the same stove and fridge in our last kitchen remodel) so having all new KitchenAid appliances installed is truly going to be a dream, too. I can’t wait to tell you more about them and I’ll be sure to have all the model numbers for the source post, too.

We can already sense that this kitchen will transform the feel of our home in all the ways we hoped it would.

Kitchen Elements Sources:

Oh I can’t wait to see the next reveal ! I love all the materials.

But….I hope your Kitchenaid appliances fare better than mine did. The refrigerator and the dishwasher EACH FLOODED OUR HOUSE TWICE. Yep, four floods. Needless to say I will never have another KA appliance in my house ever again. Thankfully I love the fridge and dw we now have, even though I think they cost more than my first car ! :)

Hi Melissa! I am so excited to see all the new elements you have chosen for your new kitchen! Just loving your choices! I know your kitchen is going to look so beautiful! I recently have done a small kitchen renovation and went with a shiplap back splash using the pine tongue and groove boards painted pure white. (I hope to post it over at Home Love Stories soon.) I am so pleased with it and I know you will too! I also love that faucet! Can’t wait to see more progress pics!

  8. Tracie

Wow, I love all your choices! I can’t wait to see it all come together. What a great way to make your house feel like “home” for Christmas.

Love how it is all coming together! I am excited to watch this happen as I am currently in the same situation. I have a galley kitchen and have chosen the exact same sink! I am trying to make a decision on cabinets today and also have simply white trim throughout our home. I am assuming your cabinets are custom. Is there any way you could share some of your decision making factors with me on how you picked your cabinets? It is such a big decision and I can use all the help I can get! Thank you!

Sure, I’ll do a post about them! But if it helps since you’re ordering, mine were ordered through a local cabinet company. They aren’t custom, but they were customizable. We got super heavy duty drawers (that was a must for me), matte finish, and our shaker style fronts have some extra “beveled” edges just for personality. If you have other questions, let me know! :)

I am obsessed with the cobalt and brass lights – just a little different for that perfect punch of personality! I love it!

I love all of your selections! I’m going with blues and just love it. I can’t wait to see more updates and the finished kitchen!!

  12. annette

This is almost as exciting as if it were my own kitchen! I love your choices and it is great to finally see the finishing touches.

  13. Stephanie

Love your choices! The faucet is probably my favorite thing about the whole kitchen. How exciting that your kitchen will be completed for Christmas. What a great Christmas present! ???

  14. Michele @ Moonfield Interiors

I’ve been meaning to tell you how much I love the round window. That faucet is so gorgeous! Love the black hardware, too. I’d love to switch out some of my dated brass doorknobs for a matte black. Good lucj with the cabinet installation!

  15. KATHYSUE

Melissa, it is all going to be so beautiful, perfect choices and so YOU!! Exciting indeed!!

  16. Debi

    Gorgeous, Melissa!
A question for you- are you doing heat coils under the tile floor? Our cork floors are worn out and I have had tile picked out as a replacement for months now. What’s stopping us is the debate as to whether we need the heat coils underneath or not. If so, there is additional prep work involved (backer board, self leveling bed material in which to set the coils, etc.) It has me wondering whether we need this additional (expensive) step.

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Hi Debi! We’re not installing heating in the floors. It would be nice, but I can live without it. :)

  17. Mary Coakley

Hi I love the elements of your kitchen, looking forward to the finished product but maybe not as much as you are.Good luck with it.

  18. Linda Grubbs

  21. Linda P.

I am really excited about your white cabinets!

  22. Jaclyn White

How did you create your design board? How did you put all the items together on one board? I love how all the elements are sort of layered over each other and you can really see how they go together. Is there a website or app that you created it in?

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Hi Jaclyn, we use photoshop for our graphics :). Hope that helps! You can make graphics in PicMonkey online, too. Not quite as fancy, but it’s a good starting point if you don’t have photoshop. Thanks!

  23. Deanna Rabe

I’m so excited for you, Melissa! I love what your doing in this room!

  24. Heather

Hi Melissa, I have even more questions after the sneak peak of your cabinets today. They are beautiful!! I can’t wait to see all of them!
I noticed that you chose to use a larger cabinet base for your sink than required. Is there a reason you did that – design or otherwise?
Your sink is beautiful even though it’s broken :( What can you tell me about any extras (drain, etc) that you ordered for your sink?
And finally, I see that you have drawers on your lowers. Could you explain a little about why you prefer those over doors with pullouts? Thanks for letting me pick your brain about all the little details and answering all my questions!!

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Hi Heather, I definitely need to do a post about cabinets specifically because there is so much to consider. In a nutshell, we used a larger cabinet for the sink for aesthetic reasons (it would look more crowded to have the sink crammed up against the dishwasher) and for functionality (more breathing room for the dishwasher). That was something my contractor and cabinet person suggested and I’m so glad we knew to do that. We just ordered a garbage disposal flange (?) for the sink. I’ll look the details up about that and add it to a future post. I only used pull outs on my pantry area because those cabinets are tall and it was more practical there to have pullouts since you couldn’t see in a drawer that was up high. I prefer drawers on lower cabinets when possible because I don’t like to have the extra step of opening a cabinet first. :) Hope that helps! Thanks!

  25. Jennifer

The detail you’ve put into organising this kitchen sounds intense! Can’t wait to see the finish!

  26. Suzanne

Found your site…beautiful…will be doing my very small kitchen shortly…could you please let me know what you used for your plank walls behind the sink…I would rather do that look than tile…thanks for any advise you can supply.
    Suzanne

    • Melissa @ The Inspired Room

Sure, we wanted the durability of tile but the softness of wood so this was a good mix. It’s a hardi plank wood, I’ll share more details on it soon!
