Hygge & A Cozy Winter House

Hygge & A Cozy Winter House

Long before I even heard of the concept of Hygge (pronounced HOO-gah, Hygge is the Danish practice of creating a cozy home, enjoying simple pleasures with a focus on well-being), I was obsessed with those very things. I could hardly believe it when I heard about Hygge, it sounds just like me! I love creating ambience through cozy homes and daily rituals. I think I would feel right at home in Denmark.

My yearly home goals always focus on the desire for greater well-being and comfort in our home. It’s hard to put into words how relieved I am to be nearing the end of this remodeling year. Remodeling is fun, but it’s not the coziest time. While I will still have a list a mile long of projects I want to get to (don’t we all?), I’m so looking forward to a new season of home-bodyness (is that a word?).

I can’t help but just be very excited about how close we are to fully enjoying and sharing the comforts we’ve been creating here.

Hygge & A Cozy Winter House

The thing is, though, I find that if you aren’t intentional about embracing coziness and comfort in the winter as a gift of the season, it’s often easy to just not put it into practice. As I wrote in my book Make Room for What You Love, you have to be intentional about creating the kind of home you want.

It’s tempting to just feel a little depressed that Christmas is over and spring feels like such a long time away. Or perhaps we start to feel frustrated with the discomfort of the colder weather (depending on where we live!) instead of just focusing on the blessings of creating a cozy winter house. Maybe we mindlessly scroll Facebook in the evening rather than mindfully curling up with a good book and a furry throw blanket.

Blast! We can so easily miss opportunities for coziness. Rather than the added ambience of a crackling fire or candles or twinkling lights that we might have really enjoyed at Christmas time, we sit in a dark dreary space lit only by a television set or computer screen.

We’ll talk more about the art and rituals of creating a cozy winter home in January (see my first 2017 Hygge post here!)

But why wait until January?

Let’s start now. Keep turning on the Christmas lights. Curl up by the fire. Set down your phone, get in your coziest jammies and nestle in closer together with your family.

Happy almost New Year, friends.

This post is in partnership with UberEATS! Get $10 off your first order, see details below.

Greetings! I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas. We sure did! We actually got to use our kitchen for the very first time on Christmas day. We were so excited, but it was a crazy week leading up to it.

Besides all the busyness that always seems to come in the final week before Christmas (last minute gift wrapping, anyone?), we literally had like eight contractors in our house and the house was a wreck (see all the contractors roaming around our dining room that day?). A contractor was installing our two new exterior doors right up until 4PM on Christmas Eve, so we could have a cozy Christmas morning in our kitchen.

We had so many people working in our house and it was SO COLD outside, so we decided to stay in and order dinner to be delivered one afternoon. We’ve used Uber for conveniently getting around Seattle now and then, but had never tried UberEATS. We had a credit to our account so we ordered up a feast.

Have you heard of UberEATS? It’s really easy to use. We just pulled up the UberEATS app on our cell phone and it showed us all the local restaurants. There were tons to choose from! After we picked one of our favorite restaurants, we were able to see the full menu and place our order. You pay with your card right from your phone so it’s super efficient. We got a confirmation of when to expect the food to arrive and could track the expected delivery time from our phone. Before we knew it, the meal was at our door!

The food was hot and delicious. Best part was we were able to sit down in our living room as a family and just enjoy time together. No prep, no cooking on our electric skillet in the basement :). UberEATS is like having your own personal delivery person who will drive over and pick up your food while you stay comfy in your own home. I think it took only about 33 minutes from the time we placed the order to the time we were sitting down to eat it.

We were already planning lots of holiday meals so our refrigerators were full. What a treat to have dinner simply brought to us at such a busy time and no mess to clean up! We’ll definitely be utilizing UberEATS again, even this week when mama gets tired of being in the kitchen :). You could even use this service to deliver a meal to someone else; perhaps bless a new mom or someone recovering from surgery with a meal.

You’ve probably had a busy holiday season, too, so let UberEATS take care of dinner one night this week and give yourself the night off. The first 50 readers to use the code INSPIRED10 on UberEATS will get $10 off your first order! Plus there’s free delivery on any order over $50 during the month of December, so try it out.

UberEATS is truly a dream service for a busy family around the holidays or anytime you have a lot going on. Have you tried it yet?
