Shutters: Easy Architectural Detail

BHG

I‘ve always loved shutters. I think it is the architectural detail that makes a home unique and give it character, and shutters are a great way for anyone to add that special touch inside and out.

The beauty of shutters is the wide variety of ways you can use them! Whether you install them permanently or just use them in a decorative way, they add the architectural richness, chunkiness and detail that I love!

You can buy them new, place a custom order or drag them out of a dumpster…shutters are all good! Shutters are one architectural detail that almost everyone can find a use for, whether you rent or own your own home. Enjoy this “shutter inspiration!”

I love the shutter inside look but have not figured out how it applies to us yet. Good ideas, thank you!

Sometimes I swear you’ve planted a webcam in my brain! Shutters are one of my favourite architectural features! I fell in love with them when I lived in Greece; so many styles and colours, handles and hinges. Because we had shutters, it meant that we usually had sheer lace curtains that always caught the breeze; rarely any heavy drapes. Shutters always speak to me of cool comfort, safety and protection as well as sun and, in my case, sea. The sound of a flapping shutter that’s escaped its catches always makes me think of the sudden rising wind just before a thunderstorm.

We don’t need them to keep the sun out in Scotland, but they’re a great alternative to curtains in rooms with Mediterranean or Colonial themes. We plan to make a simple one for the en-suite bathroom, a plain piece of painted, distressed white wood with a small Shaker heart cut out near the top, similar to the acorn in the Timberlane one above.

I love these photos – you have such an eye! We used to have a heavily carved Indian one as a feature on a white wall, but the 7th one has got me thinking that a simple one would work just as well. The ones used for mail have really got my inspirational juices going! Thanks, Melissa. Hope you’re feeling better every day.

I am actually painting our exterior shutters, TODAY. They are old (the house is over 150 yrs) and have louvers and latches on the back to keep them from blowing. Maybe I can rustle up some pictures, later.

I don’t have a post to share about shutters yet, but I did buy some to put up in my new office (if I EVERY get it done) – I can’t decide if I want them in the window, next to the window, on the wall or on the floor to hide computer cords! LOL

Oh this gives me many ideas but I dare not start a one of those until our existing house shutters are painted. They need it desperately…all sun faded.

Those white shutters with the sun shining through them…awesome.

I love the shutters and i have had an idea in my head for one the past couple of weeks. over my couch in our family room we need something to go over it so i was going to try to find two shutters, paint them and place photos in them kind of like the mail one. We knows if I will ever get to it, but I am on a mission to add shutters to the inside of my house.

maybe this post will inspire me to get moving on it.

Fabulous pics, I especially love the green shutter for mail- great idea! My house is filled with shutters on the windows so I’m pretty ‘shuttered out’.

Melissa, Living at the Jersey Shore, we went with a shutters on the beach theme in our bedrooms. This worked out very well for the casual, beachy look we were trying to achieve. The living room and dining room have custom drape treatments, and the kitchen, just a valance, but all of the other rooms have simple white shutters that tie together the entire house. If you look through my blog posts, you will see pictures here and there. I have also written a post on a store in town called Shutters In Fair Haven. It is an amazing store …you would love it.

My favorite is the mail holder. That’s a great idea! Our founder’s daughter was recently married, and we used distressed shutters as a hanging decor for her ceremony. It was beautiful!

Love shutters, especially indoor ones. I once visited a home where the indoor shutters slid into the walls like a pocket door when not in use. It was a great feature.

LOVE the ones with notes sticking in them– I can think of about ten places in my house for that one idea right now!

I saw that red shutter in an earlier blog – I think you said it covered an electric panel – and it inspired a solution to a concealment problem I’ve had. However, I haven’t been able to find one the right size! I need to expand my search to INDOOR shutters! duh.

I love shutters and I especially love the idea of using one as a letter holder! What a great idea!! My home doesn’t suit shutters or I would definitely have them but what a wonderful way to add that element to my home. Think I need to go and find me one now :) Thanks for another great, inspiring post.

I love the shutter that’s standing in the corner and holding letters as well as a kind of bulletin board. It’s such a clever way to organize things and make the space pretty at the same time!

Thanks for doing such a lovely post. I love old shutters.

I am starting a NEW Mr. Linky party. It will begin on Aug 10th so everyone will have a week and a half to think about their first post. I have a poll up for votes on which button should be the new button. The “party” is called The Knock Off Knock Out-where THRIFTY meets creative sensation. Go over and learn more about the new weekly event and I would appreciate if you would cast your vote and HELP pick the new button design and its the last week for the July GIVE-A-Way, if you would like to be a part of that event..

Great blog, shutters and home! I’m going to try to link up tomorrow with photos of my shutters, the ones I have and the ones I don’t have yet on the funky aluminum window that’s screaming for shutters.

    thanks for the inspiration

I’m a sucker for anything that combines form and function! You’ve “inspired” me to visit our local junk shop and look for an old shutter to help organize my mud room. Perfect spot for something tall and narrow.

Not only great use of shutters, but great use of so many different kinds of shutters. Love the shabby chic distressed look of the folding screen, and the crisp, clean look of new white shutters with large louvers. They let in such great light when they’re open. Very nice!

Read my mind, looking at a couple of our rooms have been thinking, they need some shutters to finish them off, to hide the aluminum window frames and add that special touch that brings all the bits of the theme together. Thanks for all the inspiration.
