Tip for Hanging Garland, Wreaths and Decorations

I love hanging garland and wreaths on my mantel, front door, staircase, windows and furniture. I like it to drape just so, or hang in exactly the “right” place. But I’ve always struggled with HOW to hang things.

I’ve tried tying, wiring, ribbons, nails, suction cups, thumbtacks and all sorts of methods. But still, sometimes I haven’t been able to hang the item exactly where I wanted it, or I ended up hammering permanent hole in my wood door or mantel that I later regret. Or, in some cases, my decorations have come tumbling to the ground. Sad.

Tip for Hanging Garland, Wreaths and Decorations

OK, not sure why this picture is sideways
but you can turn your head to read it, right?

Well, finally, I have found a little trick that is working for hanging Christmas decor in ways nothing else did…Command Hooks to the rescue!  Where were you all my life? {And the million dollar question: why didn’t I think to invent you?}

Tip for Hanging Garland, Wreaths and Decorations

These hooks can stick just about anywhere to hang holiday decor!

I’ve been using Command Hooks for awhile now to hang all sorts of every day decorations on walls and doors, and even used Command Hooks to hang the chalkboard frame on my refrigerator. And now that I’ve started my Christmas decorating, they are working great for hanging holiday decor.

Tip for Hanging Garland, Wreaths and Decorations

Here is a hook tucked back behind all of my holiday garland on my mantel!
My garland swoops down on my fireplace front so these hooks keep the garland in place!

Command Hooks come in a variety of styles, some with hooks and some with a more velcro-like system.  I’ve used both and they work great!

No more hoping my garland will stay perfectly draped across my mantel just the way I want it. No more wreath awkwardly hung in a strange place on my door or windows. Now I can hang stuff pretty much invisibly where and how I want it!

I’m going to use a Command Hook to hang my wreath too, I have had the hardest time hanging wreaths on my door because we have a window and a molding ledge thing that sticks out and makes hanging things difficult.

Command Hooks are easy to use, easy to remove when you are done with them, and so far have held most of what I have hung up without any catastrophes! And I’m not getting paid to say that, nor was I provided any free product or compensation for this post. I buy my Command Hooks at Target, in the picture hanger and hook aisle. You can also order them on Amazon!

Yay! Back to decorating for me…getting a little jump on things before Thanksgiving…

I love Command products! I use the Command strips to hang framed pictures in my travel trailer. I decided I didn’t want my home-away-from-home to look like every other trailer on the lot – it HAD to look like home! I’ve taken an assortment of my own photography, matted and framed them (under glass), hung them and they stay right there. They don’t budge a bit while we drive down the road and over bumpy backroads. Thanks for the ideas to use them with Christmas decorations.

Wow!! What a great thing to make our lives easier. I’m wondering have you used them on concrete walls? If so, do they hold well?

We LOVE command hooks too! I have used them TONS for holiday decor! <3 I will say though – if your walls are painted with semi-gloss paint, the hooks do not play as nicely for some reason… That's the only issue we have ever had though! ;) Happy Decorating!

I used them to hang some wood signs on my door and wall at home earlier this year and they do work great! I even posted about it here: http://teacuplane-sandy.blogspot.com/2010/04/my-new-cute-signs.html

I’ve seen them advertised on TV for hanging Christmas decorations too. I’m going to use them for my mantel this year. And I’m so pleased I won’t have to put a nail into anything.

Thanks for posting about this great invention. Whomever thought of it…I hope he/she made a bundle.

Those Command products are pretty neat, aren’t they? I once gave a little gift bag full of assorted ones to a graduating senior to use in her college dorm room. Since they’re removeable, they’re perfect for places like that.

Thank you for sharing this. I’ve always wondered how you and so many others do it. Nothing has worked for me except a good old-fashioned nail and that’s not always an option.

I like them too….I’ll have to see about using them for hanging my garlands this year. The trouble is….I tried using one on one of my doors and I thought I followed the instructions perfectly and yet the hook fell off (several times). I wonder what I did wrong.

oh my! Thank you for sharing this great idea. I am so embarrassed to have never even thought in this direction before! At least this year I won’t be embarrassed by my nail hing garland constantly falling to the floor :)

Command hooks are magical. I only discovered them this year. I don’t know if that is your mantel garland, but it is a gorgeous mantel garland. The white bells with the deep red berries — yum. I have to stop coming here. Too many good ideas. :-)

Not sure why I haven’t picked these handy hooks up yet. I guess I just thought they were too good to be true, but sounds like you and other bloggers love them. I’ll have to pick some up before Xmas decorating.

Thanks for the review on Command Hooks.

My husband works for the company that makes those and was thrilled to hear of your review of those! We love them too! I use them all over the house. I even use the adhesive strips to hang small quilts and decorative ikat cloths on the walls.

It’s so funny that you posted this today because I’ve been trying to put a garland on the picture rail in my dining room for three days! Mostly it’s taking that long because I’m making it as I go, but also because the re-bent ornament hooks are not quite strong enough to hold it! And I haven’t found anything in town, but maybe I can drive a bit and find these! Thanks!

Aren’t CommandHooks the best? They do require following instructions to avoid damage at removal time. But i’ve been using them for a number of hanging projects since right after they appeared on store racks, follow the weight guidelines&removal instructions, & *never* a mishap! Yay! They are like duct tape. I have duct tape &Command hooks on hand at all times! :D -s-

Thank you! I was just saying to myself. How can I hang garland from my very narrow mantel? It usually slips all around and it’s hard to balance the other decorations. Yay! This is the perfect solution.

I never thought about using command hooks this way! Great ideas!

We used some metal looking command hooks on the back of the door in the kids’ bathroom so they each had a place for a towel.’ we live in a rental, so I didn’t want anything too permanent. The hooks have worked beautifully so far!

Here’s my idea for hanging garland on mantle with no nail holes. My hubby cut me a board the exact size of the mantle top. I just staple gun garland to edge of board, plop the board onto the mantle, and place all the other decor on top of it. If it’s a non-perishable garland you want to use next year, just store the board with the garland still attached – next year hanging of garland will take only seconds!

They are easy to peel off! Some are designed to throw away but some you can just apply a new sticky back and reuse! :-)
