Inspired Holidays {Day 3}:: Why I Love This Season.Love the pop of turquoise in this inspiration photo, via BHG

If you’ve been a reader of The Inspired Room for long,
you know all about my affair.

……………………{awkward silence.}……………………….

………………………………………………………………………..

You know.  The love affair I have with this season.

Oh THAT affair! Of COURSE!

It is pretty obvious, isn’t it? I don’t really even try to hide it.

This is the FOURTH year in a row I’ve done a multi-day series incorporating the autumn season! Yay!

Wait. Four years in a row?

So WHY am I so enamored with Fall?

Why can’t I do a series in October on DECORATING WITH THE COLOR BLUE or 31 DAYS OF BLOGGING TIPS? Nothing wrong with those ideas at all, but for me, I’d be missing out on the best few weeks of the year. And no two autumns are the same so there is always something fresh and new to discover.

Inspired Holidays {Day 3}:: Why I Love This Season.fall inspiration photo, BHG

Autumn is when I get my heart in the right place.

Having my priorities straight is important, because The Inspired Room is not, nor has ever been, all about having the latest, greatest, trendiest most perfectly decorated home. It is about having an authentic, warm, meaningful from the-inside-out-kind of home. One that is inspired by deeper things than you can see or create on the surface.

Inspired Holidays {Day 3}:: Why I Love This Season.

Here is my little Autumn Manifesto:

Autumn is not reliant on the temperature of the air outside. It is not dependent on a turning of the leaves. It is definitely not just a precursor to a long cold winter….it isn’t just about decorating with pumpkins or crows or black cats.

Autumn is the season to find contentment at home by paying attention to what we already have.

The simple daily rituals of homemaking, baking, nesting, decorating and preparing for the winter holidays ahead create a sense of peace with what we have right in front of us.

THAT is why I love this season.

Autumn reminds me how to love the life & home I have.

This season is a gift that I don’t want to miss!

What small fall nesting ritual could you enjoy today around your home?

I think for me today will be cornstalks. Our 100 year old house has two columns at the front porch, and having cornstalks tied to them, framing my front porch with the pumpkins etc makes me feel very cozy when I come home. Funny thing, they seem to have the same affect on my kids, who keep saying “When are we going to put up cornstalks this year? It’s FALL!” :) Off to put cornstalks on today’s to-do list!

Autumn is my favorite season!! Today I am making a new recipe…Pumpkin Spice Donut Muffins (found on another 31 day blog). The house should be smelling perfect when my teenage son gets home from school! Maybe I should pick up some cider…

“Autumn is the season to find contentment at home by paying attention to what we already have.”

LoveloveloveloveLOVE :). I LIKE your Autumn manifesto, Melissa.

And here’s the funny thing: I’ve never considered Fall to be my favorite Season. But this weekend, I discovered a new appreciation for it–the weather was SPECTACULAR in our area, and I filled my days with a first-ever hot air balloon ride AND a 3 1/2 mile hike that threatened to break my knees! And I loved every minute!

I told my husband, “Could this weekend have been any more beautiful?” and he said, “Fall is my favorite season, no question.”

So, maybe I DO like it more than I realized…. :)

LOVE your sweet series; it makes me look at the familiar with new eyes.

I love this post, and what you’ve shared. Reminding us all to just be grateful for where we are at this moment, in our homes that God has blessed us with. We kicked off Oct. 1 by baking some fresh pumpkin bread, I woke up craving it. I’ll be sharing with my sister(who loves the stuff as much as I), she’s coming for a lunch visit. Celebrating life and autumn with a grateful heart!

    Amen!
I love how autumn makes the simple life seem so natural…little things seem to come together so seamlessly to create something extraordinary. Bringing home apple cider from the farmers market, breathing in the crisp air, inviting friends over for comfort food like pot-pie or stew, good conversations and board games over a bottle of red wine…that’s the life!

Yes. THAT is the life. Amen.

I loooooooooooovvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Autumn~ it is MY SEASON! It is to me what spring cleaning is to others~ a fresh start, new purpose, motivation and nesting. All things home! I have a bunch of ripe wheat out my door that I’m going to cut and bunch for my fall table display. This past weekend I made hamburger soup and on the menu this week will be corn chowder~ nothing like stews and soups in the fall!

Autumn is my most favorite season – I come alive after being closed up in the house during the hot heat of summer that turns me into a slug. The doors and windows are open again, the farmers are cutting the corn in the fields so the landscape is also opened up again, and I stand outside and soak it all in.

I love autumn. For me it’s a time to turn my focus towards my home once again, rather than beach or vacation or garden. I made a pumpkin cranberry cake this weekend and it was so good!

I too have a love of affair with Autumn and I’m right there with you that its more of a “feeling” than it is about decorating with pumpkins or watching leaves turn. (though i do love these things!)

your blog is so inspiring- in fact you are what has inspired me be content with and fall in love with my own home and in large part to write my 31 day series on contentment! Thank You!

    Melissa,
Today’s message is powerful and expansive — I love this season as you do…it reminds me of my “daily” bountiful harvest. For me this extends to all areas of my life, and I appreciate your home metaphor to really make this message meaningful. Abundant thanks!

I’m getting the bug to start some soups and stews like Juanita (above.) There’s something that just screams “Fall!” to me and the whole house smells like a nice warm hug.

I’ve been pulling out the throw blankets and tossing them in the wash to freshen up up again. And, the green apple scented candles have made an appearance.

I love how you are stressing to be content with what you have. It’s so important. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

    Melissa,

The little saying is so perfect and a very good thing to remind ourselves of. I know I have plenty and this time of a year is a very good time to nestle in and enjoy the abundance most of us enjoy.

    Love this series, friend.

Love that autumn is not reliant on the weather outside, cuz it’s rainy and cold down here in Medford today!

Happy 31 Days! (just home from NYC – pooped)

Thank you for the reminder of the other reasons to love my favorite season! I have been a little cranky because of the intense heat and drought…it just doesn’t feel like fall. Except for hanging a bucket of faux fall stuff on my front door, I haven’t even changed out my decor yet. I had already decided I am doing it (at least part of it) tonight – even if it was almost 90 degrees today! Your post gives me an extra burst of oomph. I can’t let myself miss the other things I love about autumn just because the weather isn’t cooperating with MY plans :)

Autumn is my favorite season. It is when I feel the most “at home” inside myself and out. Hard to explain, but it has always been that way (could have something to do with the fact that my skin is at white as your bloggy background and it starts complaining when temps rise above the 80 degree mark). Thank you for the beautiful inspiration! I just checked out a handful of BH&G’s from the library this weekend and enjoyed them at the park with my family.

    Melissa,
I wanted t first thank you and the other gals for hosting the 31 days series… I’m having a blast! (a.k.a., 31 days to a more creative life).

Your blog has been a source of inspiration to me for several months now. And I love the fact that you’re sharing your “affair” with Fall. It’s my favorite time of the year – everything just instantly becomes so snuggly, cozy and festive… it’s also the perfect “bridge” the ultimate holiday decorating time… Christmas!

I, too, LOVE you Autumn Manifesto and will be adding it to my collection of all things wonderful about fall. I just wanted to share with you my very favorite seasonal quote, too: “October is a fine and dangerous season in America . . . a wonderful time to begin anything at all.”
    – Thomas Merton,
I also share my favorite fall poem on my blog today, if you have time to take a peek: http://grammygail.blogspot.com/

And one last fall note: I’m considering printing one of the pictures I’ve taken on a large canvas and using it when I redo my living room in the colors of the season later this month.
Thanks for your ever inspirational posts!

I’ve been out of town and am just catching up on things. I think this is my favorite of your 31 Day posts so far. I’m going to pin your pretty saying to my Pinterest board. How beautiful–and how right! And as usual, Melissa, how INSPIRING! Bless you for spreading this message right here in the blogosphere where it’s so much needed. It’s way too easy to get “inspired” and then feel that you really must go out and buy lots of new things. Far better to get really inspired and make the most of what you already have! :)
