Refreshing Your Home Inside & Out {Tips to Get Started!}

Last year I was on a mission to update and organize my house. It was a year full of messy projects, involving lots of decisions and shuffling around furniture practically every week. But I’m really glad I made the effort to get so many things done. Because now we get to really enjoy our home! It was worth it for sure. By the way, that house at the top of the post? Not mine. I wish it was. It was from my Drive By on San Juan Island.

And no, you haven’t missed the kitchen reveal…eh, hem….if you see my husband around would you gently remind him we need to hang the blinds so we can take the final pics? Thank you. I’ve been patiently waiting for his help and trying not to be a pest about it, but I really do want to finish and show you how the kitchen came together. Heh heh heh!

This year I don’t plan to take on quite such extensive projects, but I still have quite a few home improvement plans on the horizon that I cannot wait to share with you! I have been mulling over a few ideas and I think I’ve settled on exactly what I want to do this year, including a few ideas that just popped into my head this week! Sometimes it pays to be a slowpoke and take my time thinking through what I really need and want.

If you are wanting to get your own house whipped into shape this year, I’ve put together two posts with tips that might inspire you to love your home both inside and out, the first is over at (in)courage and the Curb Appeal post is over at My Colortopia! Follow the links below to the posts and enjoy!

5 R’s to Rejuvenate Your Home
Spring Curb Appeal: 4 Tips to Get You Started

  1. Nicki

We just moved into our home last summer, so we have so much to do! Last summer we replaced and painted out front door, and have the whole house power washed and gutters cleaned out. We also trimmed the overgrown shrubbery. This year we are going to pull out some shrubs that aren’t looking too hot, and plant a dogwood tree. We are also going to install some window boxes in front. My blog yesterday was full of window box inspiration! And it worked, after my husband read it he texted me and said, “I want window boxes”.

    • Melissa

Ha, way to go on the subliminal inspiration for your husband! :-) Love that!

  2. Lisa

I love the colors on your house! I look forward to the big kitchen reveal.

  3. Rene

We are in home improvement mode. So many projects…and not so much money. Just taking it one project at a time. The yard/front porch is our most current project, along with a stenciling project. It’s a lot of work but I sure love crossing stuff off the list.

    • Melissa

Rene, I know exactly how you feel! So many projects, so little time and money! That “one project at a time” is the best way to look at it!

  4. Pat

Thank you so much for the 5 R’s, especially rejoice. Recently we have literally been slammed with major system repairs. The house was only built in 2004. I believe the previous owners did not take care of the major systems for whatever reason and in spite of a home inspection the itemes were not identified. Unfortunately, in discussing this with others my husband has heard “Your house is how old?” Followed by how old their house is (in one case 20 yrs old) and only now are they gettting to repairing these items. You can imagine this is only fuel to an existing fire. Finally in response to my husband’s dismay when he was reciting all the things we had fixed I started to imitate Gilda Radner as Roseanne Rosannadanna (I added my nose is running, my feet are sweating etc.) He finally started to laugh. I followed this by saying that we are at least fortunate enough to have the money to do the repairs, which is absolutely a blessing. As with most things in life recognizing the blessings we do have and having as sense of humor about all the other stuff is essential.

    • Melissa

Aw, that is really a frustrating situation, I feel for you on that, but I’m glad you are finding the humor in it and the blessing of being able to afford the repairs!

  5. Grace

I love the anticipation and planning that goes into projects so I’m glad (usually anyway) that we only have the time and money to do one project at a time. That way we are really thrilled when it is done and since we usually do projects ourselves we also have that wonderful feeling of the satisfaction of a project well done.
