How to Layer Wreaths {Easy & Frugal DIY Tip!}

Today I’m popping in to share one of my favorite frugal but oh-so-luxe decorating secrets. I’ve used this idea for years, but especially think of it at Christmas. Don’t laugh at how simple this is, but here are my instructions for how to layer wreaths. Ready? {You might want to take notes}.

Step One:

Take two wreaths with different textures and put them together.

. . .

And then?

That’s it.

WHAT? You don’t even have to wire or glue them or staple gun or power tool or sew them together or anything?

Nope! Just one step: simply hang them or set them together and you.are.done.

Finished.

I love taking wreaths from different seasons and putting them together, too. There is no need to ever buy a new wreath if you already have a few favorites laying around! Or just buy a new fresh or faux holiday wreath from a home improvement store and layer it with a branchy type wreath from a previous year, like I did for my Christmas mantel.

How to Layer Wreaths {Easy & Frugal DIY Tip!}

This year I re-used my old branchy wreath from my 2009 Christmas mantel years ago (they seem to sell them every year at Michaels Craft, use a coupon and get one!) and layered a new evergreen wreath on top of it (from The Home Depot) and hung them together from the same hook over the mantel.

The old wreath gave the new wreath a more woodsy wild textured custom feel, like you were a big spender at the fancy garden store. And then for an added coastal twist with a bit of white to make it really pop, I added white starfish by tucking them in around the greenery. Easy!

For my entry table this year, I layered a summery driftwood wreath with an old white pom pom type wreath (that’s the technical term I like to use) for a little more festivity. Then I put the Christmas tree candles in the middle just because I wanted to.

One year I layered both that same stick wreath from the mantel and the pom pom type wreath from the entry together to make a new wreath.

You can mix and match! There is no end to all the combinations you could come up with. There are no rules — if the two wreaths look good together, it’s all good.

This trick also works when you have a skimpy or boring wreath! No one wants a skimpy or boring wreath, right? So just layer two wreaths together and you’ve got a nice fluffy or highly textured wreath to be proud of.

And that concludes another complicated DIY tutorial.

You are WELCOME!

PS. Speaking of wreaths, if you missed this, come see my double wreath chandelier project! It was only a tiny bit more involved than just layering, but the effect is perfectly magical for Christmas or a party!

    You gave me a giggle this morning, Melissa. Short and succinct, and a great tip. I have been know to do this before, too, and also with garland.

    What perfect timing! Fab idea. I’m going to do my wreath this weekend. I’ve dried some slices of orange and I’m going to add them to a wreath with a bow, might do this as well!

    What a cool way to resurrect some of those old has-beens that are languishing in the back of a closet or on a basement shelf! You know … the tired ones we’ve tossed there but still love enough not to toss them out!

    Neat idea!

    That sure does sound easy and I can see how playful you can really be with this. I guess its time to go fine a few wreaths to play with. Have a great holiday.
