Do you see it? That little book on my shelf with my name on it? Y’all. I WROTE A BOOK AND IT IS HERE IN MY OFFICE! It’s not released yet so don’t worry, you haven’t missed it. But soon! March 31! I held it in my hands for the first time yesterday. Honestly, it feels like I just had a baby that I’ve been waiting for so long to see!

Eight years ago, in January of 2007, I started The Inspired Room as a decorating business to help other women create a home they loved, right where they were with what they already had. I had been passionate about creating a beautiful home, one that wasn’t for show, but rather for beautiful living. You see, while I enjoyed decorating my home and making things around me more lovely, I was really more into how it felt to live there. I wanted my home to feel beautiful to me. I didn’t care about trends or shopping or decorating for show. I saw my home as my sanctuary and I wanted others to feel that same sense of peace with their home.

It brought me joy to improve my home and take care of it, but I didn’t have a big budget to buy new things nor did I have the patience or skill to DIY or craft them. I loved to surround myself with things that were meaningful. That was my thing, embracing authenticity and simple beauty in my home. In July, I started the blog on a whim. The Inspired Room blog was a unique mix of all the topics I felt were important to finding contentment at home. I’ve stayed true to that mission.

Never in a million years did I imagine that more than a few of you would ever be out there reading or sharing this journey with me all these years later! AHHH!!! I just can’t even believe it! Much to my surprise, my rambling stories, thoughts, ideas, and imperfections resonated with fellow house-lovers!

Love the Home You Have Book 50% Off Discount

At first there were just a few readers out there, somewhere, in the big black universe.

I shared more of my heart and what embracing authenticity and finding contentment with my home meant to me.

Many of you returned, saying you feel the same way or that you were encouraged to try new things or to see your home in a new way.

You became my friends. Blogging wasn’t about posting pretty pictures or projects, it was simply about sharing the experience of creating a home and going through life one blog post at a time (with nearly eight years of updates, that’s a lot of posts!)

Many of you have been here through the ups and downs, the move to the house I have now, and the very slow process of creating this place I now call home.

Two years ago, you all gave me the courage to put those years of home stories, experiences, those simple but meaningful ideas, and those bits of encouragement into a book. A real life, hold it in your hand BOOK. This first book (which is the first of eight!), Love The Home You Have, was born after years of forming of a philosophy that was shaped through six different houses, nearly twenty years of homemaking and so many years of blogging.

This is the message I am passionate about.

This is the encouragement I need to remind myself of along the journey of creating a home, because I know how freeing, empowering and inspiring it is to love the home you have even when it isn’t always in its most lovable state. The foundational things I share in this book are what inspire ME to remember to show love to my home whenever I lose my way.

After this book, this fall, my second book (The Inspired Room) will be released. That book is going to be special in its own way too (a full color coffee table book!) and will expand upon the foundation of this first book. I can’t wait to share more about it soon.

Below you can see our happy faces posing with the book right after we opened it and held it for the first time! My daughter Courtney has been such a huge help to me through this process of book writing, I don’t know how I would have gotten through all this hard work without her! Her input was invaluable. I wanted this message to encourage her as she starts her home journey as much as it inspires me to keep on keeping on! We both put our hearts into this to make sure it was the gift we wanted to offer others, too.

Until yesterday, it was still a book I could only read online, in an electronic PDF. I still couldn’t actually believe it was real, until I opened that package Monday and held it in my own hands. Friends, IT IS BEAUTIFUL! My publisher and the artist did an amazing job at creating a book that is SO special!

It’s a paperback book of encouraging words, but it’s also an extraordinarily fun and happy two-color book filled with meaningful and pretty hand-drawn quotes and sweet little illustrations. The cover is so soft and smooth, the letters and art are embossed and it feels like a dream! It isn’t just beautiful though, it’s TOUCHABLE. While you can preorder this book in electronic form, it’s really the kind of book you want to have in real life, to put on your shelf, to set on your nightstand, to curl up with by the fire. I can’t stop hugging it, stroking it, and taking photos of it from every angle! It’s just cute.

Okay, that almost sounded like the crazy cat lady. But it’s true, I love it so much I want to put little bows on it. And set it in a basket. And put it on a rainbow. And put it in my bed. :)

I can’t wait until you all can hold it in your own hands, too. The photos cannot do it justice.

I just wanted to thank you all again for your support on this wild journey. I have several more quite exciting things I created especially for you that I can reveal in the coming weeks (eek!). This whole experience really would not be the same without you to share it with.

One thing I’m really excited to share is that Barnes & Noble is offering you guys an AMAZING deal on the preorder of Love the Home You Have on March 9 and 10th! How does 50% off the print version sound?!!!!! SERIOUSLY, that is amazing and a rare opportunity. I know they don’t offer that kind of deal often. In fact, it’s a one time deal on this book. It’s a two day only sale so I will remind you as it gets closer so you won’t miss it. It would be a wonderful time to buy yourself and a friend a book, or stock up for gifts for a new bride or homeowner! :)

I’m SO grateful to everyone who has offered their help to make sure this book gets out into the world. If you are able to share on your own social media, emails, or with friends and family about the book or the 50% off sale, that would be SO AMAZING!!! Soon I’ll be sharing a link to fun artwork and downloadable quotes from the book that you can use for yourself and to help me to spread the word about the book. Thank you!

Can’t wait to pre-order! My step-mother (she’s 82) has lamented in the past that she wants to help women love their homes, that the home is a sanctuary, that they should love it the way it is and be patient with making improvements over time. I always tell her about my “blog lady that I read,” who feels just the same way and is now even coming out with a REAL LIVE book about it. We’ve had this discussion more than once, because she is so passionate about homes and decorating. I’m ordering two books – one for her and one for my own bookshelf. Can’t wait! Oh, I think I need one for my sister, too, and a dear friend who decorates, and her young daughter, and …. I don’t have a blog, but if I did, your book would be promoted on it!

Excited for your book and congratulations for such an accomplishment! I absolutely love your blog because of its authenticity and the soul that I can feel in your home through your pictures! Your style is not staged and cluttered, and I love the fact that you use the same accessories over and over again and they seem to always fit perfectly wherever you place them. You are an example and inspiration to me, a young mom and wife who is also a lover of all things home especially my own!

I have just recently begun to look at our house as our home. In the past, because there were so many things that needed fixed or updated, I started thinking in terms of what all needed done so we could put it on the market. As a result, it has never felt quite like a home. I’m not sure how the transition in my heart took place but I’d be very interested in reading your book.

We designed and built our home 19 years ago to fit the needs of a young, growing family and it was a great place to fulfill that purpose. However, as our youngest child of our five heads off to college this fall, I find my thoughts turning to ways we can adapt our home to be a welcoming place for our adult offspring as well as their future spouses and grandkids. I love your style, your work, and mostly your attitude!

Thank you SO very much for the approach you take and the message you send! We can not all have homes that look like Pottery Barn catalogs, not would we really want them I think. It sure is easy to get caught up in that marketing, though.

15 years ago my husband and I embarked on a project to remodel a home. He’s a contractor, but quickly lost interest in the reno, leaving me to do what I could by myself, 3 children in tow. The economy soon tanked and I had no choice but to feather a nest with what I had and what I could do on my own.

You are truly and inspiration and a grounding, both at once.

This will be a long comment, because I LOVE the title of the book, and more, I love the premise of your blog and the book. Over 30 years ago as a single mom I invited a couple over for dinner. The apartment I could afford had rat holes (coverd w sheet metal) in closets, and was located on the bottom floor of an old farm house in the middle of the city. The man asked as they were leaving if he could put Formica on a counter that was coverd with oil cloth. So sweet and caring, I accepted his offer. But I also realized that knowing the Lord provided this place, I made it comfortable for me and didn’t hesitate inviting friends over. That was long ago and I’m married 38 yrs with a blended family and 12 grandkids… I still don’t hesitate inviting people over and am more concerned with their comfort than the styling of my home. But I do love to style and am ever grateful for God’s provision I all the forms it’s taken. I’m buying your book for myself & friends who struggle with regrets and unrest instead of contentment and ablility to enjoy they’re homes. Thanks for writing it!

I love your blog and it has given me so much inspiration. I am a single senior woman who lives with my little dog and I am addicted to decorating. I live in a one bedroom apartment and recently I received a beautiful french country armoire for my birthday from my daughter, which I have converted to a television cabinet. It is a cream color and as a result I have spent the past six months converting my living room into a cottage/french country/shabby chic look. I am very excited to read your book. You are such an inspiration to those of us who love our home but sometimes get “stuck” and restless with what we have. Recently I was certain I needed a new smaller sofa to update my living room but just could not justify the expense of another right now. Well, I gave the room a spring “fluff” inspired by your recent post and that was all I needed to do. I love that sofa now and see the room in a whole new perspective by rearranging furniture and swapping out accessories. (I thought I had already tried every arrangement possible but decided to give it another go and so glad I did!) What a blessing your post was to set me back on track. I am continually changing year round but the living room and that overly large leather sofa had me stumped. Thanks for inspiring me to love my room once again!
p.s. I had to laugh, my sofa is the twin to your daughter’s red one, only in golden tan leather! All 97″ of it! :) Have a blessed day…

Mellisa, I love your message, methods and mantra. We all can benefit from your inspirations and I would have loved having you inspire me in my early years of setting up my home. I’m sure I would have loved the home I had even more knowing it was Ok not to have the expensive beautiful homes that graced the pages of the magazines I read. That was all there was in the day, I remember feeling like a lovely home was out of reach. Young ladies today, on any budget, can make a warm and beautiful home they can be proud of .

Your home has inspired mine . . . and me. As my nest empties of the boys who once lived here, I feel that I’m getting re-acquainted with what I love about our home. It’s not all that impressive, but it is home, and I want to make it a haven, a sanctuary for me and my husband and however many people come by. Thank you for guiding me along the way. I can’t wait to get my hands on your book . . . and the next one . . . and the next.

Congratulations! You are an inspiration! Thank you for the opportunity of a GIVEAWAY and for 50% off pre-orders! I have several people in mind, including my sister and my young adult niece and daughter who are starting on their own homes. While we most often can’t have everything we want when we want it, I believe it’s much more satisfying and long lasting to acquire that perfect thing at the right time.

I find this blog *so* inspiring. I love the funny, conversational posts. But what I love the most are the pictures of your home and being inspired by what you’ve done. You present a way to have a really beautiful home while also having a place you can actually live in. I’m reminded not to take it all so seriously and to really have fun with it. I also really love the point you made about not making it for show, but making it a sanctuary for yourself. That’s so important to me.

Please select me to win one of your fantastic books, I would treasure your advice, read over and over and love putting into practise, so I can start welcoming family and friends back into my life. It really would be life changing for me.

You have inspired me more than you can imagine! Before coming across your website I was feeling really down about my home. We have lived here for over 30 years and I recently retired. Now I need a different feel and style in my home. Less formal, more relaxed and comfy. But now I am retired I don’t have the money I used to have. I cam across your blog via pinterest, and I feel so lucky, after reading some of your posts I have a new inspiration to take what I have and create the home I need now. I’ve event started blogging about it! Thanks so much for the confidence and inspiration Melissa, I will be forever grateful.

Melissa, your words, whether online or in print, have meaning to those who read those words. You have welcomed us, your readers, into your home and your life, which is to our benefit. How wonderful that there is a reward for you as well…knowing you have a following, people who take to heart and find pleasure in what you have to say.

And now another reward..financial I’m sure, but more than that, knowing that your messages to us about our homes is important enough to be preserved in print. It’s an opportunity of us to read and re-read about how to make our houses into homes, our decorating visions into realities and makes our homes the haven that everyone wishes for.

    Congratulations, my friend.

I live in a 100+ yr old farmhouse we’re. All oat 2 years into renovating. My flooring has been in atoeage a year. We havent had a sofa or even dining chsirs now in pver 6 months.
I don’t. Know whether to cry or give up. And burn it down. If it weren’t. For the fish upstairs…. Lol

But srsly. I started this renovation journey so I would love my home. So it would be comfortable for us… And the people we love who we wanted to spend more time with at home…

Maybe your book could inspire the last little oomph we need to get’er done.

Love the premise of your book. Discontentment is taught and caught so easily these days. I’d love to read your ideas of contentment and changing perspective about the home I have, not the house I could have one day. Congrats on the “birth” of your book baby! ;-)

I can’t remember how long I’ve been following you, but you’re the first blog of about 30 I regularly read each day (unless Jack has an entry, then HE’S first!). I’m so excited to share your view of a balancing contentment with DIY with family and friends. Congratulations on your new baby. Hope you sell millions.

I am really looking forward to your book. I have been struggling to love my house for 25+ years. I am always changing the arrangements searching for the comfortable one. I like/love most of my furniture and accessories, I just have a problem with placement. I was not born with the skill/gift of decorating LOL.

Melissa: I have a question (that I am sure you might answer in your book, but I am too impatient:)) How do you work with Hand Me Downs/ what you have even when it isn’t right? I have a lovely couch in a yellow color (not my favorite color, but very comfortable, I love the shape and I would like to recover it one day), and a big beautiful green rug (that I love on its own, but it has to be in the room with the yellow couch because of the size of the room/rug) Some day (when I don’t have a little one, and a million other things don’t need to be fixed in the house) I would love to recover the couch to work with the rug…, but today I am struggling to “work with what I have”. Do you have any practical suggestions on how to work with “bossy furniture” that sometimes needs to reside together? Should I be looking for that tip in your book?

Yes, I do talk about the need to work with what we have and I offer some tips on setting up a room comfortably and bringing unity even when you don’t love each piece. I think finding some throw pillows that you like on the couch will help you divert your eyes to something you do like and unify your room a bit more so it can be comfortable enough to live with until the day you can recover it! You maybe could even layer a rug over the green one, I used to do that when I hated my carpet! I put a sisal rug over the carpet and it helped! :) Good luck and I hope you’ll enjoy the book (and the next one coming out in the fall with a lot of decorating helps and tips!).

I have always wanted my home to be a sanctuary for anyone who entered. My husband and I are just beginning the “empty nest” season of life. I want my children to look forward to coming home. Having just discovered your blog, I look forward
To your new posts each day after a long day of being a schoolteacher. Thank you for your blog!
