Shingled House on Martha's Vineyard {If I Lived Here}

Shingled House on Martha's Vineyard {If I Lived Here}

I stumbled across this delightful coastal home in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard over at New England Home. Now, I really love living in the NW and will probably never move away, but I think I would also be really happy on Martha’s Vineyard.

I’ve never actually even been there (I’ve been in several states on the East Coast but never in that area) but really want to go someday. So many of the houses that I fall in love with online are there (or Nantucket or Cape Cod!) so I just get the feeling it is my kind of place. I am always smitten by gray shingled houses.

Even though it is unlikely that I will ever live in a shingled house on Martha’s Vineyard, nor will I likely ever have a summer house there, it is still fun to dream about it what it might be like!  :)

Have you been to that area (or live there)?

    Oh, Edgartown is magic, if a bit pricey (I guess that comes with being on an island, no?), and the houses with cedar shake definitely contribute to that. We’re lucky enough to spend a little time on the Vineyard each year, and there’s truly nothing like it!

    Great inspirational photos! Love the blue & white Delft tiles! Love grey shingled homes, which is why the home were building will have them! I’ve lived in New England for a time and love the vibe! We now live in the mid-Atlantic ( NJ, but soon moving to our new home in lower Delaware) and love life living near the ocean. ❤️

    Melissa,
    I love the classic style of grey New England shingled cottages. We have taken several trips to New England over the years and Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are just gorgeous. Think cobblestone streets, windswept beaches, lighthouses, fresh seafood and charming rose covered weathered cottages.

    It can be rather pricey in high season (July/Aug) so if you can plan a trip in September while the weather is still warm that’s always a great option.

    I’m with you, I’m just dreaming! So very beautiful maybe if I win the lotto!

    Love New England. I’ve been to Nantucket two times; once with my son and again on a honeymoon. (1989) We stayed in a sea captain’s house converted to a bed and breakfast inn. The rooms were named after flowers and were beyond cute. We rode bicycles around the island and loved the cobblestone main street. Wonderful restaurants and back then there was one called Den of Thieves and it was downstairs in a basement. It had the best beer and cheddar soup! I have this wooden building set called Cat Meow Village that I bought in a gift shop in the town I lived in back then (Northport, NY) and the buildings are all patterned after buildings on Nantucket with a little black cat sitting in front of each one. It sits on my bedroom window sill here in Gilbert, AZ.

    Martha’s Vineyard is magical. Love it. I went a few years back with my husband. We stayed in Edgartown. It’s all lovely the homes, the charm. We drove from NJ. The beach are stunning. Nantucket is even more charming and quaint. You must visit.

    I love the cottage style and grey shingle especially. I fell in love with a man who owned a beautiful, sunny forest cottage and we have been improving it over the years. Unfortunately it is clad in vinyl siding. I would love to redo it in shingle but have read that real cedar shakes are costly and have a very limited lifespan. Can anyone comment?

    Hi Melisaa,
    I live just over the bridge from the Cape in Plymouth. Also, I live in a Cape style home which is shingled in the back and sides, but has clapboards on the front. ? Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are lovely and so many of the houses are amazing.

    I love the idea of the table and chairs in front of the fireplace during the warm months. No sense in having that big black hole of the fireplace on view when it’s not being used! Thanks for the inspiration!

    I have been going to the Vineyard since I was 6 months old, eons ago :) My mother was raised there and it is my most favorite place in the world. I am obsessed with it, thus the name of my blog.. lol
    I like how eclectic the Island is… the charming old whaling captain homes in the upscale town of Edgartown… the colorful gingerbread cottages in the lively, and also family friendly town of Oak Bluffs… the colorful Gay Head cliffs in the town of Aquinnah on the outermost western end of the Vineyard… I could go on and on and on.
    I like to visit anytime I can get there from NJ but my favorite times of year are October and May… and winter…and sometimes summer… lol

    We spent two wonderful days and nights in Edgartown in August, 2014. The weather was so pleasant and invigorating ~ a real real for us Texans. The homes that back up to the bay are gorgeous. We stayed in a converted whaling captain’s home that overlooked the bay and boats. The food is amazing. Getting around on the bus to the other villages is easy and I loved Vine Haven. Would go back in a heartbeat.

    My brother’s mother-in-law lives on Cape Cod and it is a captivating place. I fell in love with the shingled house style as well. 12+ years ago my brother’s wedding reception was in the yard of the quaint cape cod home she owned back then.
