How to Decorate – Ballard Designs blog
Summertime in the NW is so lovely, especially when it’s sunny! We’ve had amazing weather lately.
We get quite a bit of sunlight (all year round) through the large windows in the back of our house, which definitely impacts how we decorate.
In fact, as we begin our second summer here in this house, I’m feeling inspired by all the sunshine to make a few changes in our living room! I guess I’m kind of on a roll lately; the sun must really be inspiring!
You might have caught a little peek at the chaos and what I’m working on in my Instagram stories this week, but not to worry, I’ll explain it all on the blog very soon.
Do you get inspired to make any changes in your decor while the sun is out?

You’re a lucky duck! Natural sunlight is such a wonderful thing, and I can definitely understand being inspired by it. Especially during the summer time when there’s so much of it. We have what seems like 400 trees surrounding us and a covered front porch, so it makes for a bit of a dark atmosphere. First home buyer mistake! It’s a great house, just so dark! Can’t wait to see the rest of your summer decorating!

wow! this is just beautiful! and the wooden floor is just perfect. Such a dreamy room! x
I enjoy cutting flowers from what I have in my yard in our flowerbeds and putting them in interesting jars I collect and setting them on my counters by the windows, and using more summery colored place mats on my kitchen table which is by a big window and I also enjoy lightly sprucing up my front porch which receives an abundance of sunshine, just a few simple things like that.
I am more likely to make more changes in the fall though!
This picture was the inspiration for my entire main floor renovation! I took the photo to the paint store for a Benjamin Moore paint match (I wanted something that would convey the feeling if not the actual color) and painted my walls BM Seashell. I ordered the exact rug from Ballard Designs and purchased a white slipcovered sofa. I added a lot of natural elements throughout, like real plants, wicker baskets, botanical prints, wooden antique pieces, etc. We also added 3 large skylights and painted the black kitchen cabinets white. My formerly dark, dreary living space is now bright and airy and my favorite place in the house. I carried this picture everywhere with me and told every contractor and tradesperson that this was the feeling I was going for. I am so happy that I achieved it!
Beautiful room! I have to know, is the tree real or artificial? If it is artificial, where did you purchase it? I have bee searching for one just like it!
The picture above is an ad from a Ballard Design catalog. They sell the artificial tree, here is the link:
