The Tale of the ChalkboardFramed Chalkboard / Zinc Card Holder

Thought y’all might like to see how festive my chalkboard is for the holidays (excuse the grainy pic, I grabbed this photo from my phone).

It’s festive alright! But in case it helps anyone out there who is maybe feeling a bit overwhelmed when it comes to keeping all of the holiday expectations in the air, so to speak, I thought I would mention a little something.

This chalkboard board literally had fall leaves drawn on this board since LAST YEAR.

I know.

Not fall leaves that we just drew on the chalkboard a couple of months ago fall. No, no. FALL LEAVES WE DREW LAST YEAR in the fall. As in 2016 Fall.

So that means we had fall leaves on our board in:

Christmas 2016

Winter 2017

Spring 2017

Summer 2017

Fall this year … again (note my logic that if you keep a season up long enough, at least you are totally on your game once a year).

So yeah. Don’t let your chalkboards don’t define you or tell you who we are.

The Tale of the Chalkboard

I know I had our tree up at Thanksgiving. Maybe that made me feel accomplished at the time. But remember, we also had fall leaves up on our chalkboard at Easter.

And if it makes any of you feel even better about the state of your holiday preparedness, our house is literally pitch black outside.

We were trying to install a new porch light and something went amiss. So when I say it’s dark, I mean not only do we NOT have Christmas lights twinkling up the dark, but NONE of our outdoor lights or porch lights work.

Our house is probably actually scaring the neighbors right now. They must think we are members of the Scrooge family.

But y’all. I’m just gonna OWN IT. It is what it is. I’ll walk inside with my HEAD HELD HIGH saying OUR LIGHT COMES FROM WITHIN. LOL!

So I clearly do not have it all together, but I’m going to make myself cozy by the tree anyway and just enjoy the season we have in front of us (and I hope you do the same, no matter what it looks like on your chalkboard or from the street, for that matter).

Hope you all are having a cozy Wednesday!

Melissa, you really make me laugh! ?. But, you are correct…our lights DO ( or should) come from inside. ??❤️ Your home ALWAYS looks warm and cozy. If it makes you feel any better tho, we have NO lights outside at all either…like in , we didn’t put up any lights at all. Still haven’t figured what I want to do…so I’ve done nothing! Haha. Well, I do have a wre@th on the front door, BUT… neither our front porch light or our walkway light light it at night…so…epic fail. Whatever…there is always next year. Hope your light situation can be corrected as I’m sure your home is gorgeously designed to be lit for all to enjoy. Have a blessed Christmas! ?❣️?

THIS POST is why I love ya Melissa, and have followed your blog since the days of your son and his giant giraffe toy running thru the old, old house! I can hear your chant: Our light comes from within! and I know you mean it, and think you probably giggle it out every night you enter or leave home. God bless you!

Awww, that’ so sweet, Kelly! Thank you. I love knowing that I still have friends following along even from way back then! Hard to believe my son was probably about 7 at that time and now he is 17!! Christmas blessings to you, friend!

Love it Melissa! Holidays should be about fun and enjoying the people and things you love, not perfection!

I have to share my chalkboard, it has the lyrics from Frank Sinatra’s song Summer Wind… “the summer wind came blowin’ in from across the sea.” It has said that for 5 years. Except by the 3rd year and my son making fun of how long “summer” was lasting in our home I changed Summer to Winter when Thanksgiving rolled around and then back again after Easter. Easy Peasy and Done! (Yes, spring and fall get slighted but hey, 2 out of 4 isn’t bad! ;)

    Happy Holidays to all!

Cute post! Light hearted and real. Now, I’ll go update my chalkboard which has a drawing on it from 6 months ago.

That’s the spirit my friend!!!! As always… you inspire me, and lift my spirits! Thank you for that.

I’m always late getting my place decorated for the holidays and tell people it’s because my birthday is in January and so I put things up late & leave them up till after my b-day :) But I’m feeling pretty relaxed about it (after having “monkey brain” during the night) and decided what I have up inside is just fine (and less to put away in January!) Our Portland, Oregon weather has been so bitter & WINDY that there was no way I was hanging lights outside. Then out came the sun today and there I was on my ladder. Made a good start & hopefully will finish tomorrow and if not, oh well, I’ll have another Christmas cookie… Thanks, Melissa, for letting us know that others aren’t perfect either ?❣️?

Thank you for echoing my Christmas in a nut shell this year. Who am I kidding, I’m pretty sure we’ve had some rotting pumpkins while we make Valentines before. Our light does come from within and a simple relaxing Christmas is way better! Thank you for making me smile and feel better about those pumpkins :)

I had my Christmas early, so I don’t have to worry about anything else holiday :) That being said, I did not even put up a tree this year. I set up the Christmas village ( 40+ houses and numerous figurines) , got a poinsettia, got out my vintage Santa and threw a wreath on both doors and called it a day.
I wish I had it in me to decorate to the hilt like I used to but I don’t so I enjoy looking at what other people do.

I love this post! I feel so much better–for some reason it has been overwhelming for me this season! Thank you!

Thanks! I needed this! I feel so much pressure right now as we are having an early Christmas (Dec. 16th!!!) due to a family member being out of town on Christmas this year. I am wrapping things up today!

Hey, I don’t even OWN a chalkboard! You’re way ahead of me there. I love your spirit, Melissa! With all that you and your family have going on, I’d day you keep up with the seasons pretty spectacularly! So our tree and a few decorations are up and our Christmas cards have been sent and half of the gifts are wrapped, so I’m calling that a win. (I have to confess I left some mini lights from last Christmas on a bunch of interesting branches in a vase near the front door, so me, too.) I’ve been feeling a bit sorry for myself lately and didn’t feel very festive at all this year–but this post struck a chord with me and, like some of your other followers have mentioned, I feel comforted and more peaceful after reading this. You have a way of making life joyful, and it rubs off on all of us, so thank you. And a very merry (dogs!) and peaceful (cozy socks and family traditions!) and blessed Christmas to you and your family!
