Bedroom Makeover Design Board

Bedroom elements on this design board in partnership with Serena & Lily

Hey friend! So as I mentioned the other day, we’re doing a little switcho chango with the design of our master bedroom. It’s a small room but it’s been fun to reimagine it! I was very happy with it as it was for the past couple of years, it really worked for the season we were in. But I’m just so ready to do to start pulling the house together even more, design-wise. I remember this phase at my old house and it got really exciting to start connecting the design dots, so to speak :).

Anyway, you saw the wall color this week. It’s a very soft, subtle grayish kind of bluish tone that I love. In a way this new direction reminds me of our last bedroom. So I guess this new look is not so new, it’s actually a reflection of my one true heart, a look I’ve always loved. I love so many looks, but I do believe I have one true style that speaks to me the most. We can talk about that another day!

Today I thought you might enjoy a little peek at our design board, since it will be another couple of weeks before my bed arrives. So for years, literally YEARS, I’ve been telling you we planned to get a new bed so we could give my mom back her bed. We ended up with hers when we moved, and she moved, and it was just too far to get it back to her.

Anyway, I’ve been looking the right bed for a long time. I haven’t bought a bed for decades, mostly because I’m super picky about them. I like upholstered beds but crossed most of them off as the fabric, style or shape didn’t work for us for a variety of reasons.

Cane Bed / Rug

The one bed I continued to come back to for a long time is a lovely wood cane bed from Serena & Lily. I love that it is unique and not like every other bed out there. I adore the style! I love the warmth of the wood, the cane detail, the classic timeless shape. It’s a great scale for this little room. And, I love that it has a footboard, too, so our blankets (and our pup Lily) won’t fall off the end of the bed at night. It’s the little things, you know?

So that’s the bed that I ultimately decided had to be mine! We chose the rug because I’m obsessed with the whimsical pattern, it will hide stuff, and it will add additional softness to the room.

Standard Shams / Euro Shams / Linen Throw Blanket / Fringe Sheets / Chambray Tassel Pillow / Stitched Quilt

The bedding is mostly white, with pretty details like blue stitching on the quilt and fringe trim the sheets, but we’re also going to incorporate bolder patterns through pillows (these standard shams and these Euro shams). I LOVE changing pillows in a room, so I am excited for all the possibilities this room will give me to be creative through the seasons.

So, now you can see the design direction I’m going in here! It all feels like a dream to me, I’m loving how the design is coming together. I can’t wait to show you the makeover in a few weeks.

Redesigning my room really has inspired me to keep listening to my heart as we work on our home. In fact, working on this room has already has motivated me to make a few other design decisions around the house that also reflect what I love most.

As much as I love the result of remodeling, most of all I enjoy pulling the house together so every corner starts to feel like home. It takes time and patience, but it’s all worth it to me.

Is there a room in your home that you’re inspired to make some changes to this spring? Let’s chat in the comments!

There is an awesome Friends & Family Sale right now, so if you’ve had your eye on any of their pieces like I have, it would be a great time shop!

  1. I like all your choices, and the bed fits your style perfectly! We have a footboard on our bed, and it’s scratched from our doodle chasing bunnies in his sleep. Ha! The scratches don’t bother me—just part of who we are and our story. My problem is bedding. Because our dog hangs out on our bed during the day, too (watching for squirrels!), I need something I can wash frequently. For now a fluffy Target blanket suffices, but I dream of something else.

    • Thanks! One thing we do for our bedding is to have an inexpensive or older secondary light weight throw, coverlet or blanket I throw over the bed for the dogs. Then we toss that in the wash frequently :). If the color still looks pretty, i don’t mind seeing it during the day as an additional layer on the bed! : )

  2. I’m interested in seeing how the headboard on the new bed works with your windows. It seems like your current bed is a bit lower, but that could just be the angle of the photos.
    Happy shopping!

Love your fresh new choices. The wall color is is so pretty and calming…. I have no doubt that when you put it all together it will be beautiful! I love blue and white!!

  4. That bed is absolutely fabulous!

  5. Hi Melissa,
All colors of blue are my favorite color, so I applaud all your choices for your new bedroom look. I hope you will write a post explaining more about what you mean by “connecting the design dots” throughout a house. I feel like this is an area where I need more guidance, with concrete examples of what/how to do it, to create a more cohesive overall home. When you like so many different styles like I do (coastal, boho, vintage, farmhouse, tropical, rustic, etc.) how can it all come together and not look mish-mash?

    • Thank you! I’d be happy to share more about that in a future post! I think I even wrote about that very topic in my book The Inspired Room. I’ve definitely had to figure out how to come up with my own look, as well as how to make things flow throughout a room and the house as a whole as I too love so many looks :).

  6. Francesca Gunn says:

Because of these past few posts. I am looking in to refreshing my room. I am not going to repaint or invest must time or money but maybe some new accents and possibly bedding. Something to spruce up the tired, boring look

  7. Rebecca Turner says:

I know what you mean about your true style. When I veer off the path of my true style, I find myself redoing things. Blue & white is crisp and fresh, and yet timeless. Love that bed!

  8. Elizabeth says:

It will be lovely when it’s done!
I have so many rooms that need to actually get decorated before I can refresh them! With building our own house the last few years , and now it’s finally done I’m just too tired and broke to even start! That’s why I love this blog, you don’t do it all in one day, which slowly helps me get my motivation back.

  9. Lisa McCracken says:

Love that bed, Melissa! Can’t wait to see the finished product! Your style is my favorite. So calming and peaceful. Thanks for sharing!

  10. I love how calm and peaceful everything is! I love all the neutral subtle colors, everything is so perfect! I can’t wait until everything comes together but I love everything you are doing!

  11. Looking forward to seeing your changes. I love all of the blue.

  12. Love the look you have planned!❤️

  13. I’m sure it’s going to be lovely, Melissa, just like the rest of your house! I love your design style, it’s so warm and welcoming….and practical, too! You think of things like the pup falling off the bed or the rug ‘hiding’ things (like dog hair no doubt!)

  14. Contented Kathy says:

Is there something wrong with me??? I love our bedroom furniture and even the comforter/valances I’ve had for several years. I’ve looked to update, but just can’t find anything that makes me want to take it home! Our BR is comfortable and restful to me, so I guess I’ll just keep it like it is for now!

  15. Why has this design board been up all week? No new posts???
