Setting a lamp on a counter has always been one of my favorite ways to bring charm and warmth to a kitchen. It’s such a simple element to add, yet it’s not all that common. I think that’s one of the reasons I love it! It’s unexpected, but simple and so homey and inviting (especially in the evenings!).

What do you think about lamps on kitchen counters?

They may not be as practical as wall or ceiling lights (and they can take up precious counter space!) but I still really like the look!

I’ve always had a lamp in my kitchen counter! Gives off a warm feeling, and you’re right; it’s cozy.

      Me too!

I love the idea. I always wanted to have a lamp on the counter, but as you said, it takes up space that I don’t have.
My grandparents used to have a table against a wall that had windows facing their driveway and a lamp on that table that would shine through the windows in the evenings. I hope to one day have a house where I could do the same. It was such a cozy, warm look.

I have never had enough counter space to use a lamp in the kitchen, but if I ever do, then I will try it out.
This weekend, we are having a yard sale..not exactly fun, but hopefully we will get rid of the unnecessary and make a few bucks in the process.

I have a lamp on one of my kitchen counters and I love it!

I’ve always had a lamp in my kitchen on the counter with a tiny 15-25 watt bulb. Cozy yes, but moreso for late night snacks with less injuries – adds just the right amount of light needed !

Something my mother-in-law always did and I love it!

I love the idea of softer lighting via a lamp in the kitchen – especially on winter days or in the evenings. I love the look in a bathroom or laundry room, too!

I adore lamps on the kitchen counter!! So comfy cozy at night… not to mention .. they are just really pretty !!!!

Yes, I love a little lamp on a counter too! So cozy. I have a garden window over my sink, doubled glass shelves and it is styled with some beautiful live African violets, a few succulents and some little momentous on display…in the winter moths I have a small lighted candle lamp that I put there as well! Really ups the cozy factor along with my under cabinet lighting in the fall & winter evenings! Yes, I have read and purchased your book Dwellings! My favorite of all your books thus far and have gifted a copy to a dear friend who is loving it as much as did! ❤️

I have always LOVED lamps on kitchen counters. I don’t think there is anything cozier than this. I’ve always tried to have on on my kitchen counter. So lovely!!

I’m glad you posted on this topic because I’ve been thinking about it since we rented a home on vacation. The woman who owned it had these charming little lamps in kitchen and scattered throughout the home. It added this warm ambience & coziness to the house. I’ve wanted to do the same in my home, but I haven’t been able to find more modern versions. Her style was very traditional. Any help you can give with more modernized, smaller lamps would be greatly appreciated!

They look pretty but with only 2 duplex outlets in my kitchen, I wouldn’t devote one to a lamp, even if I had the counter space, which I don’t.

I have always had a lamp….or two….on my counters! Right now I have one next to the stove and another next to the sink. They make the room warm and cozy!

I love the look, but I have a personal problem with seeing cords plugged into outlets and a lamp never hides the cord/outlet. All the pretty pictures above show lamps but no cord and that doesn’t represent real life. A long-life battery operated but beautiful counter lamp would be the perfect solution. Would someone please invent one?

    • Pat M.

Actually, one photo does show the cord plugged into the outlet and it proves my point perfectly.

I have always had a lamp on the kitchen counter, makes all the hard surfaces feel warmer

Yes! Ever since my first apartment, when we had a lamp on the kitchen table which was pushed against the wall, I have loved lamps in the kitchen. A small lamp on the counter is so cozy and charming. The Brits use them in their cottage kitchens as casually as their kettles. This is something I’ve observed for years when looking through their shelter magazines. I think I will always find a spot for a kitchen lamp no matter how small the kitchen.

I’ve always had lamps on kitchen counters. I adore the look and love the light it gives.

We have had a lamp in our kitchen for a long time now. It started out as a beacon in the night for drinks of water or midnight snacks but over time ambience and coziness has been added to the list. We can’t be without it now.
