Life Lately + A Peek at Our Office

With our “empty nest” being almost full again, I’ve been savoring the time we have with our kids here at home. I know it won’t last forever. You might recall that Courtney moved home a few months ago for a season, and then our college freshman Luke had to return from the dorms to finish his freshman year of college online, thanks to the pandemic!

We are a close family and it makes me happy to have this extended time with them at home. We certainly didn’t expect we’d have THIS much time together actually IN our home (ha) but we’re making the most of it! While it hasn’t been perfect, all in all we are so grateful for the positive things that have come out of it, like more time together.

Our go-to family activity lately has been playing the game Blokus while we have dinner. Have you played it? I’m not usually a huge board game lover…but even I get pretty into this one! It’s simple but has a lot of strategy to it which makes it fun.

My husband Jerry has been spending a lot of time on our yard, mostly trimming trees and bushes, pulling weeds and watering. We don’t have a landscaper or crew to help, but at least he has the time to do it and enjoys being outside. And we all love spending time in our yard! These days it’s our only escape, in addition to neighborhood walks.

You’d think with being home all the time we’d find ourselves getting bored after so many months here, but between running our businesses, keeping up on little projects around the house, and family activities we find plenty to keep ourselves busy and out of trouble haha!

Rearranging furniture seems to be something we’ve done continuously since we moved in, mostly because we keep using our rooms in different ways. Life changes and our needs do, too. That has been particularly true through this season.

When we first moved into this home, we created an office space in our lower level (remember we built a wall?). When Courtney moved in, we rearranged the lower level and relocated the larger portion of our home office to this bigger area! It makes sense with us all working together and a growing business to have this extra space.

It wasn’t a top priority for us to spend time or money on design, though, so other than one Ikea storage piece (Pax wardrobes with Bergsbo doors) we are just using what we had! It isn’t all ideal, but it works for now. We have more plans for what we’d like to do with this space, some bigger ideas and some smaller. But we aren’t in a hurry!

If you’ve been around the blog for awhile or if you have The Inspired Room book, you might recognize some of these pieces we’ve used in other areas in our homes! It’s feeling inviting, cozy, and functional. And with so many in the house again, it’s nice to have room down here to hide out in a quiet spot!

We had this big magnetic chalkboard in the hall outside my office in our old house. It’s still my favorite! I have to see things visually to feel organized, so this works well for me. Here’s a similar chalkboard!

Like we did in our old house, we also have our afternoon coffee area…you know…for coffee emergencies.

(This is the coffee maker we have down here, and you can find more of our coffee making favorites here).

These white drawers are the Alex drawers from Ikea. The shallow depth makes it easier to keep papers, art and supplies organized.

Of course I was excited to hang this special memory! My publishers framed the cover of my first book, Love the Home You Have, along with its New York Times Bestseller announcement! While I am still in disbelief that I received such a high honor, seeing the cover on my wall is a nod to the mission that prompted me to begin The Inspired Room blog thirteen years ago this July.

Starting The Inspired Room wasn’t about becoming an influencer or author, but rather it was an opportunity to help others love the home they have.

Jack and Lily love hanging out down here, too. This is Jack’s favorite spot in the office. He can’t resist a good ottoman. :)

I love that you mentioned that you rearrange furniture as the needs of the family change! I do this, too. Life is always changing and so are the needs of the family that lives in a home! I’m a big proponent of making your home work for where you are in your season of life!

I can’t believe we’ve been blogging so long! You’re one of my longest blog friends!

I enjoy the use of oils and diffusers, when I remember to incorporate them into my day. Thank you for all of your suggestions!
