This piece will be so fabulous when it has a fresh coat of paint
(and maybe some fun new hardware).
Recently, due to my move, I have ended up with a lot of things that need to be painted. A lot of mismatched wood things. I happen to know that many of you like to paint. Everywhere I go in blogland, someone is happily painting something and making it beautiful again. Is there anyone out there that DOESN’T like to paint? Is there anyone who dreads the idea and procrastinates like I do?
I love the end result, but I admit I just don’t like to do the painting part.
I have a friend in Portland that has come over several times to paint with me. She knows me. She knows I hate painting. But she. LOVES. painting. And somehow with her around, painting something is a bit more fun.
But here, in Washington? I have no one to paint with me {sniff! I think I heard crickets}.
Just look at all the pieces of furniture and other wood items I have that need paint! Someone put me out of my misery!

I need to paint this table and chairs.
I need to paint my front door and my light wood handrails.
And if I was ambitious and liked to paint, I’d paint the walls too.

I need to paint this cabinet in my son’s bathroom
when I do the Coastal bathroom makeover.
I guess I need a painting pep talk, or some sympathy. Anyone?
Let’s take a little poll.
THE PROCESS OF PAINTING: LOVE IT OR NOT?
PS. I had to laugh that Winston snuck into a couple of my photos today. He had a little accident this weekend while off on an unapproved adventure to a neighbor’s house (a St. Bernard accidentally knocked him over and he injured his shoulder. Winston is 14 years old so he isn’t as sturdy as he used to be).
After his trip to the vet, he was ordered to be on bed rest until his shoulder heals. Ha! Every time I turn around, he’s walking around, or sneaking up the stairs. Or mocking me from his bed.

I bet Winston would like a Sleep Number bed. Win one for him at Blissfully Domestic!

Your pup is adorable. My sister-in-law has a Westie too. And I also hate to paint!
I love the finished product!
Does that count? I used to love the process – choosing colors, the smell, the transformation in progress, etc. – but with two toddlers now, I’ve done very little although I have much I’d like to do!

HATE, HATE, HATE to paint! I, too, have a bunch of projects I am putting off this very minute. I’m a “painting procrastinator” for SURE!
But, when I finally get around to it, it goes faster than I thought, the results are well worth it, and I wonder why I didn’t just paint the dang thing sooner!!

How funny about Winston in your pics! My son does that. He has a new game called “Try to get my toys into Mama’s blog pics,” which is fun.
I like the first coat of paint. However, I hate the sanding and all the subsequent coats of paint I have to go through. It really is so worth it in the end.

WOW! This is the story of my life! lol! I am a yard sale, antique store junkie….I just love it! I wonder how and the world people can get rid of such awesome, unique furniture! All it may need is the sight of a paint brush and some paint and you have a wonderful piece of furniture! I cant tell you how many beautiful pieces of furniture I have given new life too and people think I have paid a fortune for it at like Pottery Barn or some other higher end store! Walls on the other hand, I hire painters! LOL!!!
I have so many things I need to paint, but I don’t enjoy it either. Too bad we don’t live in the same state or we help one another.
I am soooo with you! Love the end result but hate the work! I have 2 dressers 2 small wall cabinets and a mirror that all need help and then I need to move on to the porch…Ughhhh!
I have an idea! buy a one way ticket for your friend to come out and stay and make her good food (or buy it) and margaritas then I will buy a ticket from Washington to Calif. and I will do the same…she will be fat and happy (and tipsy) and we will both have nice white furniture! Hee! hee!

Well since I own a faux finishing company…. I love to paint! You just need a partner in crime. It’s always more fun with help!!!!!

I’m so with you on the painting thing – and just last week – I got the umpth to repaint a side board table that was “bugging” me – a color that (I told my husband) no longer made me ‘happy’…..
If I were there, I’d help you paint! Can’t wait to see what you end up with.
I hate painting walls but if it is furniture, I’m there. To freshen a chest of drawers or table with a satiny coat of white paint is bliss for me.
Dear Melissa,
I am the world’s worst painter…I mean EVER! I am slow, a perfectionist, and it is the most terrible form of punishment ever invented! So, I try to sweet talk anyone into dabbing some color around whenever I can!! Don’t get me wrong–I simply ADORE painted wood. Problem #1–Mr. Honey who ADORES wood grain (READ: boring brown stain!). It is a mortal sin to say, “Honey, I have been thinking about painting…!” Beauty has prevailed, however, and we have gorgeous 1880s wide trim painted white along with several pieces of furniture.
If I were there (and then I could be close to my daughter!), I would cheer you on, help you pick out amazing colors and debate the merits of various paint brushes…as long as I don’t have to hold a brush in my hand! EEEEKKKK!
Can’t wait to see the furniture painted. It will be fab!

I’m with you, Melissa! I always love the results but not the prep and process! especially furniture pieces! walls and trim aren’t so bad…but still the prep….I guess if I had a dedicated place to do it with everything right there, etc……MAYBE that would make it more enticing?!
;-D

Melissa, am completely with you! Love freshly painted things, but seriously dislike painting them — messy and tedious, but really worth it in the end. Have a couple of wood-framed mirrors that would look beautiful in a high-gloss white, but keep putting the project off . . .
Hope you’re having a fantastic week,
xo
I really enjoy painting walls. Hubby and I flip houses as a “side job” and the painting is my job – he does the construction type stuff.
But, sadly, he won’t let me paint any furniture.
(I hear crickets also…) I have a piece very much like the one you show pictured, that is screaming for a coat of white paint but hubby won’t let me. “Antiques are never to be painted!” Blah.
So I have lots of brown furniture.

Cracking up. Oh, why oh why must we be left with so much brown? LOL! Luckily I have finally convinced my hubby that SOME wood pieces should be painted because they are just blah. And, it is all about the mix in the room! Too much brown is blah, so pick the less pretty items and paint them but hang on to the truly beautiful wood pieces. That is what I say. But hubbies don’t always listen to me.
I love what will be… not so much the ‘how it gets there’ part of it all
although, i looooove to spray paint stuff
Yep, I’m about 6
I fear it and dread it too. Not sure why, perhaps the upheaval that is involved: things to be moved, covered etc.
I love how painted things look, Ijust hate to paint and my house needs a lot of paint right now!

Hi Melissa! I’ve been checking your blog since last summer, but only now reading this post did I realize that we might be neighbors (or sort of). Are you in Clark County?
If we’re neighbors we should meet and become a painting support group for each other!
Email me if you want to get in touch. ~Bronwyn
Although I realize this blog is a year old, I totally hear you on painting…it’s just such a mess, it’s hard to do with children around.
Love to paint BUT hate the clean up… just like I LOVE to cook but hate the washing up…
