I bet I know the answer to this question, but do you ever watch a movie and totally lose track of the whole plot because you are drooling over the house they are in? Yeah. me too. I look like I’m totally watching the movie but I am actually taking in every detail of the architecture, the decor, the windows, the rugs, the furniture. I can’t help myself.
Last night I was doing some catching up on blog reading. I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the Skirted Round Table had an interview last week with the set designer of Something’s Gotta Give. I knew I better listen in! I know that movie has been around for quite awhile now, but I never get tired of looking at or talking about that house.
It was a fun interview and I learned quite a few things I didn’t know! Like, it wasn’t a house at all. Gasp. So sad about that. I was interesting though, learning what goes on behind the scenes in creating a house for a movie set and where the inspiration came from.
Anyway, if you have some time while you are hanging out on the computer and you loved that Something’s Gotta Give house as much as I did, you might want to listen in. Makes me want to watch the movie all over again.
Click the image below to head to The Skirted Round Table…but first, I have a question for you…
What are your favorite movie set houses?
I want to know your favorites so I can catch any I’ve missed.

MY all time favorite is probably Father of the Bride, but I also covet the kitchen in Stepmom with Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon. It’s a very sad movie but worth the tears to check out the house.
.-= pam´s last blog ..bridal shower =-.
Definitely the house in “Dan in Real Life”…and the house is REAL!! It’s amazing.

This is why I love blogs…I find out I’m not alone in my craziness! My hubs doesn’t understand why I watch Something’s Gotta Give over and over again when I don’t even like the movie, uh, I just love looking at the house!
Other movies I watch over & over for the house: Father of the Bride and You’ve Got Mail (although, I really like the plot of both of those movies as well).
This post is soooo funny (and revealing) I do the same thing! Although I do love the storyline, I’m primarily drooling over the home decor/layout/ect. My favorites are “Father of the Bride” and “Something’s Gotta Give” as well as “What lies beneath”. I own all these dvd’s so I can pop one in when I need some inspiration.

Stepmom is my favorite house by far.
you said it right! i looooove the set of I Love You, Man…. i actually blogged about how much i love it… http://hishouseherhelp.wordpress.com/2009/12/07/bedrooms-wallcovering/
i’m not alone, but must shout out, Father of the Bride. To die for.
The interior of the house in Nights in Rodanthe. Everyone talks about the exterior or that house and it was too fabulous too but the interior shots of the faded rugs, the shabbiness, the colour – the house was definitely the star of that movie. Also, Rosemary’s Baby – loved what she did with that brownstone.
Of course, most of the homes mentioned above, but also an English terrace house in a movie starring Richard E. Grant called “Jack and Sarah” and the huge house in Cheaper by the Dozen . Meredith xo.
.-= Meredith´s last blog ..here’s to us…… =-.
YES….You’ve got mail…love her apartment, Practial Magic..conservatory, The Holiday…Kate Winslet’s English cottage and most certainly Something’s Got To Give…the whole house!!!!
I LOVED mandy moore’s kitchen in Because I Said So, and the entire EVERYTHING from Dan in Real Life….the house both inside and out, and the entier state of Rhode Island, for that matter! At least I’m pretty sure that’s where it’s based!
I have the same love and adoration for the house (set?) of Something’s Gotta Give but I’ve also, secretly, coveted the beautiful home (inside and out) in Father Of The Bride.
You’ve Got Mail, Cheaper by the Dozen- I love the artwork on the cabinets in the old house, but I love the new house,
I watch the movie “Hanging Up” solely to see Meg Ryan’s house and especially kitchen. I love watching the house change through the movie as those projects we all have slowly get completed. My favorite part of the kitchen is the window seat that wraps around under a corner window. It is perfect for entertaining while cooking.
I totally agree with Lauren. Hated the movie “Hanging Up”, but I now will watch just the parts with Meg Ryan’s house, just to drool & take notes. I love every part of it. I want those open shelves. And the window seat. And the flowered courtyard.

I loved the Home Alone house, always wondered why they wanted to leave during the holidays with a gorgeous house like that!
There are too many to name. I always thought that the Something’s Gotta Give house was super cool, but wasn’t it like a U-shape where you could see one side from the other? Kind of like Cameron Diaz’s high school house in Something About Mary? Oh my. Can’t believe I just went there.
Anyway, yes. Super house and love all the ones mentioned: Cheaper by the Dozen, Father of the Bride, etc. All classics!!
I also liked Meg Ryan’s house in “You’ve Got Mail” and the “Father of the Bride” house. Note to Donna… the “House Sitter” house was filmed at a home in Concord, MA, next to my hometown. I don’t remeber the house esactly from the movie, but the homes in that town are gorgeous!!
I am like the sets of “Modern Family” on ABC on Wednesday nights.. a great mix of different styles (I’m too much of a rookie to be able to name them!)
It’s funny I just did a post last week on my blog about one of my favourite rooms from the movie Calamity Jane (http://gracie-senseandsimplicity.blogspot.com/2010/01/firing-up-my-decorating-mojo.html). It’s not that this is my favourite room, actually, it is more the transformation that takes place from hovel to cute little cabin.
I also love the country house Doris Day and Rock Hudson go to in Pillow Talk. If you have a chance to see that little gem – take note of how her clothes always match the room she is in. I love it.

My favorite of all time was the Pennsylvania house in Marley and Me. I also love the English house in The Holiday too and the Family Stone house too.
I love Meg Ryan’s apartment in You’ve Got Mail. So cute.
Hooked on Houses had a post about it last year? http://hookedonhouses.net/2009/06/28/meg-ryans-brownstone-in-youve-got-mail/

Oh, the house in Nanny McPhee! I *love* the colors and have to rewind the movie to reconnect to the plot I get so overwhelmed with the house.
I’ll no doubt kick myself over other ones I love, but that’s my first choice.
The one that comes to mind first and foremost is the houe from ‘Practical Magic’. The whole house, inside and out! If I could live there, I would die a very happy girl!

I love love love Meg Ryan’s apartment in You’ve Got Mail! Its my all time favorite. I could just *see* myself living in that apartment. I also love the house in Message in a Bottle, so casual and comfy. This is a great topic as I am planning on getting a new apartment and will need lots of decorating inspiration!
Yes – totally!!!! I think my favorite movie set houses are the Home Alone one (my favorite of all time), the Father of the Bride house and the It’s Complicated house. Love those!!!
XOXO

I often adore movies simply because of the houses/scenery featured! In addition to a few of my favorite that were already mentioned (HouseSitter and Practical Magic) some extra fabulous movie houses/sets are George of The Jungle’s treehouse, Forrest Gump’s big white house, the beach house in To Gillian On Her 37th Birthday, I Dreamed of Africa, and Beetle Juice!
Thanks so much for mention The Skirted Roundtable! Everyone has had great choices for movies!

the best set is IT’S COMPLICATED! absolutely loved her kitchen and bakery–i’d go see the movie again just to take in the scenery!
i paused the movie Old School because of the tile in the kitchen!
i love the set of Family Man, The Holiday, and Julia Childs home in julie& julia.

I own some dvds because I LOVE the houses in those movies. One of my favorites is Somethings Gotta Give – it was on TV the other night and I found myself watching because I love that house. I also like Because I Said So, Under The Tuscan Sun, and The Breakup. I Have not seen the movie It’s Complicated yet, but I had 3 different girlfriends tell me I needed to see this movie, they knew I would love the house and garden. I already know I will buy this movie when it comes out!! They are all great inspirations.
Looks like I’ve got some movie watching to do! I also love You’ve got Mail, and had totally forgotten about Mr and Mrs Smith. But now I’m thinking I better go watch Something’s gotta give-how have I missed that?!?

Definitely Home Alone! I love how the entire house was decorated in red/white/green let alone the fact that the house is gorgeous anyway. My husband has a stack of Christmas movies that we watch every year, and I’m always glad this is the first one. I try to see if I’m missing anything in one of the rooms.

“Evening” with Claire Danes has a couple interesting, traditional older homes with elegant interiors. And “Dark Victory” and “The Great Lie” with Bette David have charming, classical older homes. I admit to feeling like a peeping tom for wanting to see the interiors of interesting houses. LOL
You have no idea how happy this post has made me!! Ever since I first saw that movie I have been in LOVE with that house! I have searched and searched and searched for any info I can find on it, so this post is like a big huge beacon screaming at me!
. Thanks so much for sharing the link!
My new fav is Meryl Streep’s home in It’s Complicated. It’s a simple 1920′s Mediterranean in Santa Barbara that has a classic elegance to it! The movie was great but I was definitely captivated by the house!
I know it’s a kid’s show but I spent the entire time watching the beautiful arts & crafts house and decorating in Zathura. Love it! Did anybody else notice this one? I’m going to have to go back through and check the other comments!
I am so not minimalist in my own home, but the clean midcentury futurism of Gattaca and of both Alex’s apartment and his victims’ home in A Clockwork Orange completely inspire me.
The home in It’s Complicated was one of the most captivating I’ve seen in a long time. So gorgeous.

I wish I could find images of the house from “A Cooler Climate”, a made-for-cable TV movie that’s probably more than ten years old now, staring Sally Field…, as well as of other homes that I remember!

I love so many of the homes already mentioned. Another home that I just loved was from The Blindside. I also really liked Sandra Bullocks clothes in the movie!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this “house”! Oddly enough I was thinking of it just the other day.
I LOVED this post! Makes me want to go back and watch a bunch of these movies again and it showed me I’m not crazy! I do this ALL the time. I love many of the movies that were already mentioned but one that I noticed that wasn’t is the house from Transformers. I know this isn’t a very girlie movie…I have a husband and a son so I’m sure that’s why I’ve seen it. Thanks for posting this again. I’ve got lots of links to check out now!!
I absolutely loved the elegant staircase and home set in “Mommie Dearest”. Probably not a politically correct movie to love something from, but those rooms were fabulous!

Surely you’ve heard of Hooked on Houses!? She has a ‘movie monday’ every week where she highlights the homes in all kinds of different movies/tv shows. Give it a look!

Oh, yes, of course I have heard of Hooked on Houses! Love her blog (and Julia, the blog writer, too!). It is fun to see what The Inspired Room readers favorite movie set houses are! So many great movies listed!
So funny you said this. As I was reading the post I was like oh yes, “something’s gotta give” and then you mentioned it. It cracked me up. That is the only one that really sticks out in my mind.
I’m a big fan of Carrie Bradshaw’s apt in the Sex and the City Movie after it gets a makeover. Loved the colors! Good post by the way!

Hope Floats—-Sandra Bullock’s characters mother’s house was cool sans the taxidermy.
GILMORE GIRLS!! I love it because it’s got such personality!
Okay so I am not the only crazy woman that does this. I pause and rewind and paused …so many times for the decor.
I do this with great garden scenes in movies too!
Rats that is not a real house!

The home in the Stuart Little movies is just amazing!!
