Something’s Gotta Give
& Favorite Movie Set Houses

I bet I know the answer to this question, but do you ever watch a movie and totally lose track of the whole plot because you are drooling over the house they are in? Yeah. me too. I look like I’m totally watching the movie but I am actually taking in every detail of the architecture, the decor, the windows, the rugs, the furniture. I can’t help myself.

Last night I was doing some catching up on blog reading.  I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the Skirted Round Table had an interview last week with the set designer of Something’s Gotta Give. I knew I better listen in! I know that movie has been around for quite awhile now, but I never get tired of looking at or talking about that house.

It was a fun interview and I learned quite a few things I didn’t know! Like, it wasn’t a house at all. Gasp. So sad about that. I was interesting though, learning what goes on behind the scenes in creating a house for a movie set and where the inspiration came from.

Anyway, if you have some time while you are hanging out on the computer and you loved that Something’s Gotta Give house as much as I did, you might want to listen in. Makes me want to watch the movie all over again.

Click the image below to head to The Skirted Round Table…but first, I have a question for you…

What are your favorite movie set houses?

I want to know your favorites so I can catch any I’ve missed.

Funny you should post about this!! My husband is constantly amazed by my inability to watch a television show without making a comment about furnishings, paint colours, etc. The other evening we were watching a rather serious murder mystery drama and in the scene a woman was being choked and tossed around a room….into a gorgeous hutch. I swear it was the most beautiful hutch I have ever seen!! :o ) It’s nice to know that I am not alone in my passions! Becki

    • Melissa says:

Ha, that is totally me. Poor woman in the scene, but I’d be looking at the hutch too. My husband is always saying … “Are you tracking with this movie?” And of course, I am not tracking with the plot. I am too distracted by the beauty of the decor, the setting of the home and all the great ideas I am taking in!

So good to know so many of us have the same affliction! :-)

  2. Something’s Gotta Give, of course. Mr. and Mrs. Smith is one I always cite. The kitchen is to die for. That beach house in Julia Robert’s Sleeping With the Enemy. Robert DeNiro’s Beach House in Heat. Amy Adams house in Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day. Michelle Pfieffer’s house in Cheri. Castle Howard in Brideshead Revisited. Joan Crawford’s closet in Mommy Dearest. The setting of Jack Ryan’s house in Patriot Games. Alicia’s Apartment-Living Room in The Good Wife. And for “messy but interesting mind,” Sherlock Holmes’ house and the elder Rabbi’s study in A Serious Man….and I’m just getting warmed up.

I LOVE the Stuart Little movie set house. I was watching it recently with my boys and when I googled it found Hooked on Houses. So. Much. Fun. Actually just posted about it here!

Frasier’s condo on the Frasier tv show
Charlie’s beach house on Two and a Half Men tv show
    The Holiday houses
    It’s Complicated
the inn in Vermont from the movie White Christmas

I’m with you! All are my favorites, although the house in Something’s Gotta Give may be the a real frontrunner for me. I think what makes each house work so well is not only how it sits on the site but also how it compliments the characters and plot. Most of the characters in the movies listed above have careers in the creative arts…playwrights, music producers, architects, performers….it’s logical that their houses would be extremely well-designed as well. Good list!

    • Michelle B. says:

Sheila is Right…On…The…Money!!!! (with the exception of 2 1/2 Men…I don’t watch that show) The rest of the homes listed have always been my absolute FAVORITE T.V. homes. Sometimes I watch the movies just to see the beautiful homes.
Something’s Gotta Give is numero UNO! I love the beach front.
Practical Magic- It’s just gorgeous! Especially the greenhouse.
With Frasier, I’d have to say that Nile’s Condo was more stunning for me. Frasier’s is nice also. But I covet Nile’s Apt. or Condo.
      The Inn from White Christmas…FAB-U-LOUSSSS!

I always liked Mike & Carol Brady’s house too. (I admit it.)

  7. This post is kind of old, but I didn’t see my movie listed..Penelope. Her space. I practically fell off my chair when I saw it, and then spent the next four hours googling, getting screencaps, and blogging it. And the clothes. :p http://miscellanyofme.blogspot.com/2008/10/fractured-fairy-tale.html

After that, Practical Magic. Of course.

It has been brought to my attention that a lot of people have asked about the painting of the carton of “EGGS” in the kitchen of the movie “Mr.+Mrs. Smith.” My name is Shelley Brown.I am the artist who painted it. Giclee’s of the painting are available at srbrown25@gmail.com So glad you like it!

I LOVE the house occupied by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in “Mr.and Mrs.Smith”!!

  10. Stacey says:

    Hi all….

Never forget The Lakehouse, the house itself and, of course, Chicago’s architecture.

And then there is the ultimate bungalow in Back to the Future.

Not to mention all the Arts and Crafts goodies in The Stakeout

Plot is great but good design leaves an imprint as well! :-)

  11. Julia says:

I just this week saw “The Greatest” and fell head over heels with the house they live in. Not the beach house, the REAL house! I’m obsessed! All I can find out is that the movie exteriors were filmed in and around Nyack, NY.

  12. Michelle B. says:

Okay, I’m going to rent some of these movies that you guys are mentioning just so that I can see the houses!

I forgot to mention: Home Alone -Gorgeous! (that went up for sale recently also.)

I also love every-single-house that Katherine Hepburn has resided in for all of her movies.

I can’t forget the house that Marlon Brando lived in, in The Godfather.

My biggest love of all houses is the house that the movie “CLUE” was filmed.
