Don't be Afraid to let Backdrops Steal the Show

O ften I have talked about walls being the backdrop to a room and letting the furniture and accessories be the main event. Yet, sometimes the backdrop sets the stage and almost steals the show.

I happened to run across a few rooms that had simple but effective backdrops that caught my attention and really gave the room a big punch of personality.

The first one was the bedroom, above, with the bright blue textured walls. The deep saturated color really pops against the white and contrasts with the black furniture. The room is very memorable thanks to that wall color!

Then I saw this image from House Beautiful and I loved the seagrass backdrop to the bar area of the living room. The wallpaper backdrop really sets that area apart as a special destination!

This chalkboard behind the kitchen counter is a great backdrop for a family kitchen. Practical doesn’t have to be boring! The use of a chalkboard wall as a backdrop definitely gives this room a comfortable homey feeling!

I also did a double take on the orange wall in this room — it is a striking backdrop to the entry shelves and hooks. I’m not usually into accent walls (painting just one wall a color), but this is definitely one that works to give this wall warmth, personality and sets it apart as the hardworking wall that it is! Instead of this wall being a strictly background utilitarian space, the bold orange wall gives it loads of personality all its own.

Walls can be quietly supportive in the background of a room or they can be a creative opportunity to be a vital part of the overall design.

Don’t be afraid to let your backdrop steal the show!

We love color here at our cottage, so that first room – the blue bedroom is a delight to me! The white trim and the black furniture make it work!

    Have a lovely weekend!

  4. Imperfect

Such gorgeous walls. I actually have a guest bedroom just begging me to do something with it. Might have to make a wall a backdrop in there.

love that blue it’s gorgeous! me want!

Wow, I love that kitchen photo- the blackboard acts a beautiful backing for the chandelier and the pot rack. I have found, generally speaking, that the rooms where you will photograph people do better in a neutral, but the other rooms are very fun for playing with color (like mudrooms, bathrooms, bedrooms). Beautiful photos you found, Melissa!

  7. Jo

One of our bathrooms is a bright blue colour like that bedroom. Also paired with crisp white. I love it.

  8. Karon

That blue wall is really beautiful, I love that whole room; it makes me want to re-paint and re-decorate this weekend!! Thanks for the inspiration, have a super weekend.

I love the chalkboard wall in the kitchen. Thinking about doing something similar in my kitchen. Always have a big image on that wall though. Wonder how it would look if I kept it on that wall?

Your posts keep reminding me to broaden my view in terms of playing with colour and for that, I thank you!

Hmmm… I was getting up the nerve to paint one wall of my kitchen a creamy pale yellow… now I think I’m ready to do it! :)

  12. Centsational Girl

You’re right, those are stunning backdrops and so inspiring! I especially love the seagrass and that mudroom, just gorgeous!

I love the chalkboard paint. It inspires me to use it as a backsplash paint in my builder grade kitchen hungy for some funkiness.

Love that mudroom…the color of the wall, the cubbies…it’s like a piece of music with a lovely melody, it sings!!!

Great pictures I love the chalkboard… I am recently in the middle of a kitchen renovation and am thinking of making the wall black ;) I think chalkboard is even an idea that suits my home better as I am using lots of concrete as well THX for sharing ;)

The blue room really caught my eye. Everything just popped against it. While I didn’t use Blue I think the color I chose for our master bedroom has almost the same affect.
You just gave me a idea for my next blog post in the near future on our new home progess. I’m not a big fan of the orange color family but I really like the muddroom. If I had one I might of had to copy that room.
As always I’m inspired by your blog

I, too, love that dark blue bedroom – it’s just stunning!

  18. Jody

I like the orange wall against the white. Terrific!
