If you’re anything like me, the moment the sunshine returns, you’re inspired to refresh your outdoor spaces and spend more time outside.

Just off our bedroom, our tiny deck becomes our favorite warm-weather escape. The view certainly adds to the experience, but it’s really the simple, intentional details that can make any space feel like a retreat—no matter the location.

There are so many beautiful, space-smart options available at Wayfair, making it easier than ever to turn even the smallest outdoor area into your own little oasis. Below are a few favorites (several of these I have and love, as you’ll see in the photos throughout this post).

Here are a few small space secrets I’ve learned for turning any outdoor area into a serene outdoor retreat:

1. Choose Furniture That Works Hard (and Looks Good Doing It)

In a small space, every piece matters.

Look for furniture that is:

  • appropriately scaled (nothing too bulky)
  • multifunctional (benches with storage, nesting tables, etc.)
  • visually light (open frames, slimmer profiles)

When your furniture fits the space and serves more than one purpose, everything feels more open and more usable.

A few pieces on my deck:

But my favorite pieces of all on this deck are these outdoor wicker plant stands that can convert into multiple configurations (see examples below).

Outdoor Wicker Plant Stands

They can be styled in so many ways…planter, side table, storage, and more. They have the look of wicker but are durable enough for outdoor use.

You can remove the top basket and use it on its own for plants or storage, or set it on a table, windowsill, or even the ground. Try placing the basket on the lower shelf and using the top as a surface (one of my favorite setups!), or use that top piece separately as a tray. You can even group a few together to create a little privacy or define an outdoor space.

Table/Planter

They’re just as cute indoors, too—use as a planter, storage piece, or small furniture anywhere from a bedroom to an entry or bath.

2. Create a “Room” Feeling, Even Outdoors

One of the biggest improvements you can make is to design your outdoor area like an extension of your home.

A few simple ways to do that:

  • Lay an outdoor rug to define the space
  • Use pillows and cushions for softness
  • Incorporate a small table for drinks or books
  • Add cozy lighting through cordless outdoor lamps, lanterns with candles, or string lights
  • greenery or potted plants
  • a cozy throw for cooler evenings

3. Keep the Palette Calm and Cohesive

A small space can quickly feel cluttered if there’s too much visual noise.

Sticking to a simple, cohesive color palette helps everything feel calmer, more spacious, and more pulled together.

I went with mostly neutrals for the main pieces on my deck so that I could easily add different colors in rugs, accessories, or flowers to change up my look.

Create Your Own Small Space Retreat

Whether you’re refreshing a tiny deck, a balcony, or just a little corner outside, you really can create your own peaceful retreat at home.
