Bring cottage charm to your backyard is in partnership with Wayfair
In the many homes we’ve lived in over the years, some had sprawling yards and others only a small patch of outdoor space. Having both taught me that charm doesn’t come from the size of a yard, but from the thoughtful details that make it feel loved.
A welcoming bench, a window box overflowing with flowers, a birdhouse tucked among the trees, or a cozy place to gather at the end of the day. These are the simple touches that make an outdoor space feel inviting and memorable.
Just as we layer comfort, beauty, and personality inside our homes, we can create that same sense of welcome outdoors.

Here are six simple ways to bring cottage charm to your backyard or outdoor spaces:

1. Include Architectural Details
The pieces that give a backyard character.
- Awnings (how adorable is this awning outside the Tiny Cottage? It comes in several color options here)
- Window boxes
- Garden gates
- Trellises
- Arbors
- Birdhouses
- Charming sheds

2. Create Mini-Gardens with Planters
A backyard always feels more welcoming when plants are gathered close to where people spend time. Even if you don’t have much room to plant, planters can be tucked in here and there to give you more garden space anywhere.
- Wicker planters
- Large pots
- Window boxes – (we have these window boxes in our backyard and these window boxes on our front porch railing)
- Container gardens

3. Add Inviting Places to Linger
Every charming backyard needs a romantic spot that invites you in and encourages you to stay awhile.
- Benches (we have our folding bench, and this bench in front)
- Rocking chairs (we have these blue rocking chairs and also these matching armchairs…love the ‘wave’ shape on top!)
- Outdoor sofas or chairs
- Café tables (we love our teak folding café table)

4. Make It Feel Like an Outdoor Room
Set up spaces like you would a real room by adding charming elements that make it feel like you.
- Outdoor rugs – this is our striped rug above
- Pillows – we have these block print pillows and striped ruffle pillows above, and these outdoor blue striped pillows in our backyard
- Side tables
- Comfortable seating
- Umbrellas – I have my eye on this navy scalloped umbrella for our back deck
- Rattan outdoor lamps
- Accessories -– we have a few meaningful garden statues in our backyard that make us smile!
- Wicker planters we have -– I love how versatile these are! You can use them as a two-tier planter, style them as a side table, or remove the basket and tray to use each piece separately.

5. Make Gathering in the Backyard a Memorable Experience
Add simple touches that encourage connection and make gatherings memorable, even in small spaces.

6. Add Evening Magic
The details that draw you in and make your outdoor spaces feel cozy after sunset.
- String lights
- Lanterns
- Fire pit
- Outdoor lamps (we’ve been enjoying this waterproof navy blue lamp above, and these adorable cordless rattan shade lamps)
